Highlights of the day were Rufous-bellied Chachalaca (endemic), Short-tailed Hawk, Squirrel Cuckoo, Russet-crowned Motmot, Bright-rumped Attila, Sinaloa Crow (endemic), and this owl.

Arriving in company with a Beech King Air as 'support', for most of the event she was unable to fly due to the awful weather that curtailed many of the scheduled displays

The mottled duck (Anas fulvigula) or mottled mallard is a medium-sized dabbling duck. It is intermediate in appearance between the female mallard and the American black duck.

I think this is a Mottled Duck female ... what a beauty. Too tired to look it up right now, but I'll correct my records later if I can!

Second time around: 2023-03-16 as someone posted a wonderful shot of one and inspired me to share this again.

Mottled Umber - Erannis defoliaria

This duck may look like a commonplace Mallard, but Mallards are actually rather rare this far south (in this area). It turned out to be a nice lifer - a Mottled Duck. A handsome male relaxing in the sun.
