All the wind last night killed the electricity supply — a good excuse to break out the hurricane lamps and candles! Luckily the camera still had enough power to run off a few shots before I got to eat my supper! Lit mostly with the candle and hurricane lamp, I had to break out the off-camera flash for a bit of extra light — the neighbours probably thought I was letting off indoor fireworks! Decorated the scene with a few fallen leaves to represent the wind! #powercut #gales #hurricanelamp #candlelight #strobist #soup #niftyfifty #foodphotography #foodstyles_gf #foodartstyles_gf #still_life #stilllife #markmakingdesign #most_deserving #photowall #all_shots_ #uk_potd #icatching #bd #niftyfifty #autumn2013 #oxfordshire

The thing about fog is how it softens the ugly and brightens the beautiful, gives nothing but good emotion to lonely places most deserving. I've never liked to know too much about what's next, there's this paralyzing force of anticipation that does me no good. The brand of anxiety I've got prefers a vanishing point, a destination out of sight. It reminds me of playing video games in the 90s, when computing power limited draw distance. There was always a mist out there on the horizon, a world waiting to load, calling you closer before all was revealed. Now, even though technology gives everything away, I still look at life within the render. All I want to see is in reach, close on the sides and secret. While the big picture whirls out of all size and perspective, I look for a little one that never makes the news or history books. Ordinary stories, like the one I'm living, the tale I'm telling now.

Not a great match, but the most deserving side won!

This shot started out very differently and got changed half-way through — I was really pleased with the results. The light was so lovely that I wanted very minimal processing to preserve its quality and tone. #cheese #physalis #niftyfifty #foodphotography #foodstyles_gf #foodartstyles_gf #still_life #stilllife #markmakingdesign #most_deserving #photowall #all_shots_ #uk_potd #icatching #bd #niftyfifty #bokeh #dofaddicts #ig_capture #ketsourinemacarons #jj_food #honey #oxfordshire #uk

“NO, THIS NOT a scene from the movie 2001, but an artist’s conception of what a Boeing - built spaceport might look like, when and if such a structure becomes a reality. Boeing Aerospace Co. is studying this “versatile operations base in space” under terms of a $400,000, year-long contract with NASA. Geared to the flights of the space shuttle (shown upper left), the space station would orbit about 250 miles above the Earth. It would have mainly operational, rather than scientific, functions. A crew of four could man the spaceport by the late 1980s, officials said. – Drawing by John J. Olson.”

Due to its larger size (8.625" x 11"), along with being on Kodak paper, I'm pretty sure this was part of some polished, professional Boeing presentation portfolio/packet.

Exquisite detail and a masterful depiction of multiple geometric perspectives, shadows/shading…you name it…a walk-in-the-park for John J. Olson. Gratifying to see him called out in the description/caption. The man – not just the artist – was most deserving of it:

This week, ladies, you will have a Bonus theme! Confessionals! It is optional, but I recommend you do it anyways because it will definitely be a big plus sign in your favor when it comes down to elimination time! I want you look look very simple, lots of sweet, pastel colors. Your name, age and city also has to be on there. In the description, you can say whatever you want. What it's like in the house, who aer your friends/enemies, etc. But you also need to tell me who YOU think is the MOST DESERVING to stay, and the LEAST DESERVING to stay. Neither of them can be yourself. Deadline for this is the same as the main theme, December 6th! No later!!!

Adapted from a recipe by Nigella Lawson, featuring chocolate, cream and, bizarrely, marsh mallows. The result, though, is superb — a smooth, indulgent, creamy consistency and surprisingly light. Served in dinky little espresso cups, perfect for photography. Back-lit high-key shot, with natural window light gives a lovely airy feel to the shot and combines really well with a shallow depth of field. Again, from the camera's metering point of view, the shot is over-exposed, as the camera meter really can't cope with this sort of lighting. I set up the camera, on a tripod, connected to a TV as a monitor and compose and focus (manually) the shot using the camera's 'live view' function. This allows me time to tweak the composition, whilst looking at a TV screen, rather than the camera's tiny LCD (it's necessary to set the camera's auto-power off to off or 30 mins or so). Exposure set on manual, I dial in the aperture I want — in this case, for a shallow depth of field, F2.5 (stopped down a little to reduce chromatic aberration (nasty purple highlights) from the cheaper Canon 50mm F1.8). I then set whatever shutter speed is required to bring the exposure up to what looks right, eyeballing it for the most part, I've learnt how the particular TV screen affects what the final shot will look like. In this case, a shutter speed of 1/8 sec was required. You have to be careful on a day with cloud and sun, as the natural light levels are constantly fluctuating. #mm_tips #puddingporn #dessertporn #chocolateporn #chocolate #chocolatepots #nigella #nigellarecipe #chocolates #highkey #foodphotography #pudding #foodstyles_gf #still_life #stilllife #markmakingdesign #most_deserving #photowall #all_shots #uk_photooftheday #icatching #bd #niftyfifty #bokeh #dofaddicts

I tried to find more information of this cutting near Diapur in Victoria. This was the best I could doRAILWAY PICK AND SHOVEL

WORK

VERY LITTLE AVAlLABLE.

Since the announcement was made that the

Government intended to proceed with railway

construction, numbers of laboring men have

been presenting themselves daily at the

Spencer street offices, asking for employment

at pick and shovel work. On inquiry

we find that it is useless for

men to expect work on the

railways until the construction of new lines

has been authorised. Some sixty have been

engaged for regrading operations on the

Great Southern line, but they will only have

employment for a few weeks. Nearly two

thousand names have been registered, and

when further work is available the most

deserving cases will first be considered.

There are about 300 men engaged on the

formations of the line from Wycheproof to

Sea Lake, and the department will be able

to keep them going until early in January.

In order to ensure the support of

the families of men taken on by the

department, a percentage of their earnings

Is retained by the Engineer-in-Chief's

branch, and handed over to their wives.

This condition has to be agreed to before the

men are engaged, and was initiated on ac

count of the squandering propensities of

many of the men, who used to spend all

their money in drink at the country shanties,

the families being left to starve.

Excellent progress Is being made with the

surveys of the railway front Cunningham to

Orbost, and other lines, so that work can be

commeced without delay, as soon as they

are sanctioned by Parliament..

Turns out my mother had my grandmother's jewellery box which, together with some almost-period jewellery and dressing table set, was perfect for this composition. Lit with natural daylight from camera left, and the oil lamp providing the front fill, together with some lovely ambience. Shot with a 50mm lens at F9 for full-focus and sharpness, with a polarising filter to saturate colours and kill some unwanted reflective highlights. Processed with Snapseed with just a touch of Vintage. #edwardian #dressingtable #antique #vintage #oillamp #jewellery #jewelry #pearls #mirror #reflection #flowers #ic_flowers #smallthings #instanaturelover #stilllife #still_life #markmakingdesign #most_deserving #photowall #all_shots #uk_photooftheday #icatching #bd #niftyfifty #oxfordshire #uk #snapseed

Objects and lighting chosen to to ally blend in, as well as themed around 'things that might be found inside an old barn'. Featuring another of my many (but never enough) old oil lamps — this one is an old mining lamp, of the 'Davy Lamp' type. First time I've ever dared light it, not sure it's terribly safe! Scene is lit almost entirely by the Davy lamp, with just a little ambient from the room. After a bit of fiddling, decided to take a three-shot bracketed exposure, (F2 increments) and HDR combine them, on my iPad, in 'Mobile HDR' which did a pretty good job. Finished processing in Snapseed. #stilllife #still_life #dairy #sackweight #iron #warmtones #fiftyshadesoforange #oillamp #davylamp #mininglamp #minerslamp #markmakingdesign #most_deserving #photowall #all_shots #uk_photooftheday #icatching #bd #hessian #seeds #hdr #hdrphoto #snapseed #canon60d #oxfordshire #uk

Having a few days off, for the Easter Holiday, gives me a chance to spend a bit more time than I usually have in setting up a shot. This one took all morning to get right, not to mention the planning (which I've been contemplating for a few weeks). Wanted to shoot more of an 'interior decor' sort of image, and I really wanted to have a crack at shooting with a mirror in frame — they are a massive pain to control what's reflected — you're having to work with the composition in the foreground, it's reflection, and then controlling the reflection in the background. I was planning a completely cream/brown palette but succumbed, at the last minute, and added some miniature daffodils and the blue bottle for a little punch and lift. A very subtle vintage effect has been applied in the ever-trusty Snapseed. #handmadesoap #soap #naturalsoap #bathroom #mirror #reflection #seasalt #seavitamins #shells #vintage #interiordecor #soapporn #snapseed #oxfordshire #uk #most_deserving #photowall #all_shots #uk_photooftheday #icatching #bd #markmakingdesign #soft_tones #dofaddicts #bokeh #candlelight #still_life #stilllife #niftyfifty

Well, it's Easter, so eggs and chocolate and daffodils are pretty well a must for any photo. Whilst yesterday's daffodils were still alive, it would have been a shame not to make the most of them in a some more photos. The mini-hurricane lamp always adds a touch of rustic charm to an image, tying in with the rural theme. The eggs are quails' eggs, from Waitrose Supermarket, that have been emptied out so that I can keep them for future photographs. Most advice for cleaning out eggs says to put holes in the top and bottom ends — this would be useless for photos, so I took a pin and carefully opened up a 1cm hole in the side (picking the least attractive side) and removed the contents with a narrow stream of water, from the tap (the eggs were rather old, so not good to keep the content for anything). #easter #eastersaturday #eastereggs #eggs #daffodils #flower #flowers #ic_flowers #ic_nature #quailseggs #hurricanelamp #mm_easter #oxfordshire #uk #most_deserving #photowall #all_shots #uk_photooftheday #icatching #bd #markmakingdesign #stilllife #still_life #instanaturelover #chocolate #chocolates #chocolateporn #chocs

trin and i went camping at La Push, on the western coast of washington.

i'm not really one for sunsets, but this one seemed most deserving.

sunlight peeking out from under a rock bridge, over the water.

it was fun to walk down the beach to find just the right angle where the sun aligned with the opening.

the beach itself is somewhat secluded. you have to walk a trail over a hill through the woods, then amble over an circumnavigable wall of massive driftwood.

hardly strenuous, but inconvenient enough to keep the people on this beach to a dedicated handful.

French collectors card in the series 'Portrait de Stars; L'encyclopédie du Cinéma' by Edito Service, 1992. Photo: Collection Cinémathèque Française. Caption: Musidora, 1915, France.

With her heavily kohled dark eyes, somewhat sinister make-up, pale skin and exotic wardrobes, French actress Musidora (1889-1957) created an unforgettable vamp persona. She is best known for her roles in the Louis Feuillade serials Les Vampires (1915-1916) as Irma Vep, the voluptuous, amoral villainess, and in Judex (1917) as Marie Verdier. At a time when many women in the film industry were relegated to acting, Musidora also achieved some success as a producer and director. Later she became a journalist and wrote about cinema.

Musidora was born Jeanne Roques in Paris, France in 1889. She was raised by a feminist mother and socialist father. She began her career in the arts at an early age, writing her first novel at the age of fifteen and acting on the stage with the likes of Colette, one of her lifelong friends. She performed in revues at French music halls and cabarets, such as the Folies Bergère, Concert Mayol, and La Cigale. Jeanne adopted the stage name Musidora (Greek for "gift of the muses"), after the heroine in Théophile Gautier's novel Fortunio. She made her film debut around 1909, but her in the silent production Les miseres de l'aiguille/The misery of the needle (Raphael Clamour, 1914). She starred in a few silent films by Gaston Ravel, including La bouquetière des Catalans/The Flower Girl of Catalonia (Gaston Ravel, 1914) and Le trophée du Zouave/The Zouave trophy (Gaston Ravel, 1915). She also began to work with the highly successful film director Louis Feuillade, and appeared in a dozen of his short silent films for Gaumont, including Severo Torelli (Louis Feuillade, 1914), Tu n'épouseras jamais un avocet/You will never marry a lawyer (Louis Feuillade, 1914) featuring Marcel Levesque, Le calvaire/The calvary (Louis Feuillade, 1914) with René Navarre and Les noces d'argent/Silver Wedding (Louis Feuillade, 1915) with Édouard Mathé. Musidora then appeared in his hugely successful serial Les Vampires/The Vampires (Louis Feuillade, 1915-1916) as cabaret singer Irma Vep (an anagram of ‘vampire’) opposite Édouard Mathé as crusading journalist Philippe Guerande. Les Vampires was not actually about vampires, but about a criminal gang-cum-secret society inspired by the exploits of the real-life Bonnot Gang. Vep, besides playing a leading role in the Vampires' crimes, also spends two episodes under the hypnotic control of Moreno, a rival criminal who makes her his lover and induces her to assassinate the Grand Vampire. Musidora’s mystique was accentuated by her large, dark eyes and wearing a black leotard, hood and tights. The series used gadgets like poison rings, poison fountain pens, cabinets with fake back panels etc., and was an immediate success with French cinema-goers and ran in 10 instalments until 1916. After the Les Vampires serial, Musidora starred as Diana Monti in Judex (Louis Feuillade, 1917), another popular Feuillade serial filmed in 1916 but delayed for release until 1917 because of World War I. Judex is a twelve part serial following the adventures of the masked vigilante Judex (René Cresté) as he fights against criminals led by the corrupt banker Favrauxom. Though not intended to be avant-garde, Les Vampires and Judex have been lauded by critics like André Bazin as the birth of avant-garde cinema and cited by filmmakers as Fritz Lang and Luis Buñuel as being extremely influential in their desires to become directors.

Musidora also starred in films by other directors, like Le pied qui étreint (Jacques Feyder, 1916) - a funny send-up of the Feuillade's serials, the silent adventure film Les chacals/The Jackals (André Hugon, 1917), starring André Nox, La jeune fille la plus méritante de France/The most deserving girl of France (Germaine Dulac, 1918), and Mademoiselle Chiffon (André Hugon, 1919), with Suzanne Munte. Apart from her acting career, she became a film producer and director under the tutelage of her mentor, Louis Feuillade. Her first film was an adaptation oa novel by her friend Colette, La vagabonda/The Vagabond (Musidora, Eugenio Perego, 1918). Between the late 1910s and early 1920s, she directed ten films, all of which are lost with the exception of two: the tragic romance Soleil et ombre/Sol y sombre/Sun and Shadow (Jaime De Lasuen, Musidora, 1922) and La terre des taureaux/La tierra de los toros/The Land of the Bulls (Musidora, 1924), both of which were filmed in Spain, starring the Cordoban mounted bullfighter Antonio Cañero. In Italy, she produced and directed La Flamme Cachée/The Hidden Flame (Roger Lion, Musidora, 1918) based on the work of her friend Colette. At a time when many women in the film industry were relegated to acting, Musidora achieved a degree of success as a producer and director. Annette Förster in her article at Women Film Pioneers Project: “While her films were favorably reviewed in the press, Musidora as producer reputedly only lost money on them. It remains unclear whether this was due to the terms of her contract, as she claimed in a 1946 interview with Renee Sylvaire, or to the fact that the films failed at the box office.” Her final film role was as Delilah in the drama Le berceau de dieu/The Cradle of God (Fred LeRoy Granville, 1926) After her career as an actress was over, she focused on writing and producing. Her last film was an homage to her mentor Feuillade entitled La Magique Image/The Magic Image (1950), which she both directed and starred in. Late in her life she would occasionally work in the ticket booth of the Cinematheque Francaise—few patrons realised that the older woman in the foyer might be starring in the film they were watching. At 68, Musidora died in Paris, France in 1957 and was laid to rest in the Cimetière de Bois-le-Roi. Musidora was married to Dr. Clément Marot from 1927 till 1944. The union produced one child, Clément Marot Jr.

A little desperately needed touch of spring sunshine on this dark and stormy Autumn day. Torrential rain and gale-force winds are forecast, here in South Oxfordshire, in the UK — plus the clocks have gone back an hour and it's very very dark. Decided to cheer things up with a nice sunny shot with plenty of lemony zingyness! Shot in standard 6x4 for a bit of a different composition. #puddingporn #desertporn #lemonmeringue #lemons #niftyfifty #foodphotography #pudding #foodstyles_gf #foodartstyles_gf #still_life #stilllife #markmakingdesign #most_deserving #photowall #all_shots_ #uk_potd #icatching #bd #niftyfifty #bokeh #dofaddicts #autumn2013 #ig_captures #bakingporn #baking #greatbritishbakeoff

* This is a miniature icicle (about 3/4 in) that I rotated 90 degrees to create this sculpture of a raven. the trickster, symbol of the Pacific Northwest Coast people.

C'est un tout petit glaçon (de 2 cm) qui, en le tournant 90 degrés, s'est transformé en cette magnifique sculpture qui ressemble étrangement au corbeau créateur, symbole des autochtones du Pacifique Nord-Ouest.

* Symbolism of the raven :

Mischievous and curious the Raven is the cultural focus of the Native Northwest Coast People. He symbolizes creation, knowledge, prestige as well as the complexity of nature and the subtlety of truth. He also symbolizes the unknown and is there to show that every person sees the world in a different way as another. The Raven was often called upon to clarify truths in visions, as the wise elders knew that what the eye sees is not always the truth. Many of the original peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast refer to him as a god, and it is believed by some that messages from the creator or the cosmos are buried in the wings of the Raven only to be released to the families most deserving of his knowledge. The Raven is a long distance healer and is known as the “keeper of secrets,” he helps us in our lives by exposing the truth of kept secrets that could potentially harm us, in doing so he helps us back to good health. The Raven was only ever feared if misused. Besides being a member of many different clans, every descendant from the Northwest Coast First Nations belongs to either a Raven or Eagle Clan. The membership was always defined by which clans the mother belonged to.

In many Northwest Coast Communities stories are told about the Raven and his many achievements. One of the most common stories is how the Raven stole the light in the form of the sun, the moon and stars. Many say that he transformed himself into a baby to find out where the light was hidden and then stole it from an old chief who had kept them in his house locked away in a large bentwood box. After Raven escaped with the box through the smoke hole of the house, he placed the sun, the moon and the stars in the sky for all beings to enjoy. Originally the Raven had white feathers and after flying through the smoke hole with the light, his feathers turned black and stayed black until today.

Never forget, cunts are still running the world. Listen and think: Jarvis Cocker - Run the World

Did you hear? There's a natural order

Those most deserving will end up with the most

That the cream cannot help but always rise up to the top

Well I say, "Shit floats"

If you thought things had changed

Friend, you'd better think again

Bluntly put, in the fewest of words

Cunts are still running the world

Cunts are still running the world

Oh yeah

Now the working classes are obsolete

They are surplus to society's needs

So let 'em all kill each other

And get it made overseas

That's the word, don't you know

From the guys that's running the show

So let's be perfectly clear boys and girls

Cunts are still running the world

Cunts are still running the world

Oh yeah

Oh yeah

Feed your children on crayfish and lobster tails

Find a school near the top of the league

In theory I respect your right to exist

I will kill you if you move in next to me

And it stinks, yeah it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

But the takings are up by a third, so

Cunts are still running the world, yeah

Cunts are still running the world

Oh yeah

The free market is perfectly natural

Do you think that I'm some kind of dummy?

It's the ideal way to order the world

"Fuck the morals, does it make any money?"

If you don't like it, then leave

Or use your right to protest on the street

Yeah use that right, but don't imagine that it's heard

Not whilst cunts are still running the world

Cunts are still running the world, yeah

Cunts are still running the world

Cunts are still running the world, yeah

She began her career in the arts at an early age, writing her first novel at the age of fifteen and acting on the stage with the likes of Colette, one of her lifelong friends. She performed in revues at French music halls and cabarets, such as the Folies Bergère, Concert Mayol, and La Cigale. Jeanne adopted the stage name Musidora (Greek for "gift of the muses"), after the heroine in Théophile Gautier's novel Fortunio. She made her film debut around 1909, but her in the silent production Les misères de l'aiguille / The Misery of the Needle (Raphael Clamour, 1914). She starred in a few silent films by Gaston Ravel, including La bouquetière des Catalans/The Flower Girl of Catalonia (Gaston Ravel, 1914) and Le trophée du Zouave/The Zouave trophy (Gaston Ravel, 1915). She also began to work with the highly successful film director Louis Feuillade, and appeared in a dozen of his short silent films for Gaumont, including Seul au monde (Louis Feuillade, 1914), Tu n'épouseras jamais un avocet / You will never marry a lawyer (Louis Feuillade, 1914) featuring Marcel Levesque, Le calvaire / The Calvary (Louis Feuillade, 1914) with René Navarre and Les noces d'argent / Silver Wedding (Louis Feuillade, 1915) with Édouard Mathé. Musidora then appeared in his hugely successful serial Les Vampires / The Vampires (Louis Feuillade, 1915-1916) as cabaret singer Irma Vep (an anagram of ‘vampire’) opposite Édouard Mathé as crusading journalist Philippe Guerande. The series used gadgets like poison rings, poison fountain pens, cabinets with fake back panels, etc., and was an immediate success with French cinema-goers and ran in 10 instalments until 1916. After the Les Vampires serial, Musidora starred as Diana Monti in Judex (Louis Feuillade, 1917), another popular Feuillade serial filmed in 1916 but delayed for release until 1917 because of World War I. Judex is a twelve-part serial following the adventures of the masked vigilante Judex (René Cresté) as he fights against criminals led by the corrupt banker Favrauxom. Though not intended to be avant-garde, Les Vampires and Judex have been lauded by critics like André Bazin as the birth of avant-garde cinema and cited by filmmakers like Fritz Lang and Luis Buñuel as being extremely influential in their desires to become directors.

Musidora also starred in films by other directors, like Le pied qui étreint (Jacques Feyder, 1916) - a funny send-up of Feuillade's serials, the silent adventure film Les chacals / The Jackals (André Hugon, 1917), starring André Nox, La jeune fille la plus méritante de France / The Most Deserving Girl of France (Germaine Dulac, 1918), and Mademoiselle Chiffon (André Hugon, 1919), with Suzanne Munte. Apart from her acting career, she became a film producer and director under the tutelage of her mentor, Louis Feuillade. Her first film was an adaptation of a novel by her friend Colette, La vagabonda / The Vagabond (Musidora, Eugenio Perego, 1918). Between the late 1910s and early 1920s, she directed ten films, all of which are lost except two: the tragic romance Soleil et ombre / Sol y sombre / Sun and Shadow (Jaime De Lasuen, Musidora, 1922) and La terre des taureaux / La tierra de los toros / The Land of the Bulls (Musidora, 1924), both of which were filmed in Spain, starring the Cordoban mounted bullfighter Antonio Cañero. In Italy, she produced and directed La Flamme Cachée / The Hidden Flame (Roger Lion, Musidora, 1918) based on the work of her friend Colette. At a time when many women in the film industry were relegated to acting, Musidora achieved a degree of success as a producer and director. Annette Förster, in her article at Women Film Pioneers Project: “While her films were favourably reviewed in the press, Musidora as producer reputedly only lost money on them. It remains unclear whether this was due to the terms of her contract, as she claimed in a 1946 interview with Renee Sylvaire, or to the fact that the films failed at the box office.” Her final film role was as Delilah in the drama Le berceau de dieu / The Cradle of God (Fred LeRoy Granville, 1926). After her career as an actress was over, she focused on writing and producing. Her last film was an homage to her mentor Feuillade entitled La Magique Image/The Magic Image (1950), which she both directed and starred in. Late in her life, she would occasionally work in the ticket booth of the Cinematheque Francaise—few patrons realised that the older woman in the foyer might be starring in the film they were watching. At 68, Musidora died in Paris, France, in 1957 and was laid to rest in the Cimetière de Bois-le-Roi. Musidora was married to Dr. Clément Marot from 1927 till 1944. The union produced one child, Clément Marot Jr.

TIBERIUS, 17 (?) September 14–March 16, 37.

In the name of Agrippina died October 18, 33. Struck by Gaius, March 18, 37–January 24, 41. Sestertius, Rome 37–41, Æ 30.58 g. Obv. Bendenoun, Coins of the Ancient World, A Portrait of the JDL Collection, Tradart, Genève, 2009, 49 (this coin). Condition Very rare and among the finest specimens known. A delicate portrait of sublime style, Tiber tone. Extremely fine. Provenance Tradart Genève SA, Genève 1993, lot 197. Sotheby’s, Hunt sale I, New York 1990, lot 124. Bank Leu AG 7, Zürich 1973, lot 338. From the Hunt and Weintraub collections. Note Agrippina Senior was among the most deserving, yet least fortunate of the Julio-Claudian women. After her marriage in A.D. 5 to Augustus’ preferred heir, Germanicus, she was poised to achieve a status on par with the empress Livia. However, with the death of Augustus and the accession of Tiberius, power within the dynasty shifted decisively from the Julians to the Claudians. Even though Agrippina’s marriage offered a union of the two bloodlines, her prospects did not survive under Tiberius. When Germanicus died at Antioch late in A.D. 19 under suspicious circumstances, Agrippina devoted herself to opposing Tiberius and his prefect Sejanus. Finally, in 29, Tiberius deprived her of freedom, and in 33 she died in exile. Three issues of sestertii were struck for Agrippina Senior, all posthumously. The first, produced by her son Caligula, shows on its reverse a carpentum; the second, issued by her brother Claudius, has on its reverse a large SC surrounded by a Claudian inscription; the third is a restoration of the Claudian type by the emperor Titus (79-81), whose inscriptions are substituted for those of Claudius. The obvese inscription on Caligula’s issue, AGRIPPINA M F MAT C CAESARIS AVGVSTI, describes Agrippina as the daughter of Marcus (Agrippa) and the mother of Gaius (Caligula). Claudius’ inscription also identifies her as Agrippa’s daughter, but ends GERMANICI CAESARIS, thus shifting the focus from her being the mother of Caligula to being the widow of Claudius’ deceased brother Germanicus. Distinctions in the portraits follow the same lines as the inscriptions: on the issue of Caligula, Agrippina has a slender profile like that of her son, whereas on Claudius’ her face is broader and fuller, in keeping with his appearance.

In the absence of any mushrooms to photograph, and with horrible weather, I decided it was time for a bit of baking — and food photography! A very simple (and delicious) crumble, made with harvested apples and the last of the year's blackberries. Photographed, on a tripod, with a 50mm lens at F2.8 for shallow depth of field; the focus was locked on the back of the crumble. Lit with natural light, from camera left, and a little fill-light from a reflector to camera right. #blackberries #puddingporn #desertporn #applecrumble #apples #niftyfifty #foodphotography #pudding #foodstyles_gf #foodartstyles_gf #still_life #stilllife #markmakingdesign #most_deserving #photowall #all_shots_ #uk_potd #icatching #bd #niftyfifty #bokeh #dofaddicts #autumn2013 #ig_captures #bakingporn #baking
