The mosque was built between the years 1606 to 1616 by Sultan Ahmet and sits high on top of one of the hills of Istanbul. The interior of the mosque is decorated with blue tiles. A huge courtyard adjoins the mosque as do fountains and gardens.

When I see sights like this and am part of a huge throng of people, I try to focus on shots that don't include the masses of people.

Casablanca, Morocco

The Hassan II Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الحسن الثاني‎, French: Grande Mosquée Hassan II) is a mosque in Casablanca, Morocco. It is the second largest functioning mosque in Africa and is the 7th largest in the world. Its minaret is the world's second tallest minaret at 210 metres (689 ft). Completed in 1993, it was designed by Michel Pinseau under the guidance of King Hassan II and built by Moroccan artisans from all over the kingdom. The minaret is 60 stories high topped by a laser, the light from which is directed towards Mecca. The mosque stands on a promontory looking out to the Atlantic Ocean; worshippers can pray over the sea but there is no glass floor looking into the sea. The walls are of hand-crafted marble and the roof is retractable. A maximum of 105,000 worshippers can gather together for prayer: 25,000 inside the mosque hall and another 80,000 on the mosque's outside ground.—from Wikipedia

Built for the Middle Eastern Setting category of Summer Joust 2019.

I decided to build a section of a mosque with its typical elements:

* a minaret

* a carpet for prayer

* mihrab - the niche in the wall, indicating the direction of Mecca

* minbar - the pulpit with stairs, where the imam stands during the prayer

Architectural style is mainly inspired by mosques in Morocco.

The Blue Mosque is one of the highlights in Istanbul. The best place to photograph the mosque is from the terrace restaurant in the Seven Hills Hotel.

I had a wonderful dinner there, spent about $40, and had the table the whole time from 7:30pm until around 9:30pm. They take reservations, ask for Nusret, sevenhillshotel.com. The photo is geotagged to the hotel.

A sunrise shot would be great from this spot, but it gets light really early during the summer.

Taken in Summer 2008. Stopped at the side of the road to take a picture of the mosque at sunset and saw it shrouded in smoke which was coming from a fire at the parliament building nearby. I think the photo is better because of it! I haven't done any processing on the shot, it's as it was when it was taken.

Kyrgyzstan doesn't have many photogenic buildings, most of the soviet era architecture is ugly enough to shatter the lens of a plastic disposable camera. Naryn city has one reasonably photogenic mosque, though the overhead cables make it difficult to take a clean photo.
