The morpho butterflies comprise many species of Neotropical butterfly under the genus Morpho. This genus includes more than 29 accepted species and 147 accepted subspecies, found mostly in South America, Mexico, and Central America.Morpho wingspans range from 7.5 cm (3.0 in) for M. rhodopteron to 20 cm (7.9 in) for M. hecuba, the imposing sunset morpho. The name morpho, meaning "changed" or "modified", is also an epithet. Blue morphos are severely threatened by the deforestation of tropical forests and habitat fragmentation. Humans provide a direct threat to this spectacular creature because their beauty attracts artists and collectors from all over the globe who wish to capture and display them. Aside from humans, birds like the jacamar and flycatcher are the adult butterfly’s natural predators.

A vibrant close-up of Morpho peleides, the Blue Morpho butterfly, showcasing its iridescent wings and graceful form as it rests on a jungle leaf.
Many *Morpho butterflies are coloured in metallic, shimmering shades of blue and green. These colours are not a result of pigmentation but rather are an example of iridescence: the extremely fine lamellated scales covering the Morpho's wings reflect incident light repeatedly at successive layers, leading to interference effects that depend on both wavelength and angle of incidence/observance. Thus the colours produced vary with viewing angle, however they are actually surprisingly uniform, perhaps due to the tetrahedral (diamond-like) structural arrangement of the scales or diffraction from overlying cell layers. This structure may be called a photonic crystal. The iridescent lamellae are present on the dorsal side of their wings only, leaving the ventral side a drab brown.

The Peleides Blue Morpho is brown with markings when the wings are closed but when open, the wings are an iridescent blue. The wingspan ranges from 7.5–20 cm (3.0–7.9 in). The butterfly lives only 115 days. Its favorite food is rotting fruit. This one is sipping on a banana. The sun was so bright that the blue-grey bands at the edge of the wings look white in this photo. Butterfly Garden, Natural History Museum, Gainesville, Florida.
I photographed this lovely butterfly during a visit to Victoria's Butterfly Garden. Although I am unsure, I thinks that it is some kind of Black Morpho. If anyone can offer a positive idea, please contact me. It was certainly difficult to photograph not just because of its dark colour but also on account of its constant movement. Even when it was feeding, its wings never seemed to stop moving. The photo was taken in June 2023, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy and stay well.

What does "Alighting Inspiration" Mean?
Alighting means: to settle or stay after descending. This silhouette was so inspiring to me. Pretty, feminine and so delicate. As a creative person sometimes we run into moments of artist's block. When life overwhelms, creativity can suffer. After dealing with some stressful things in my life, I felt a bit paralyzed to paint. The butterfly is in the process of alighting onto her finger tips. In my image, the butterfly is in full colour and when it lands upon her fingers, it will infuse her with life, colour and most importantly, INSPIRATION.

The Peleides Blue Morpho (Morpho peleides) is an iridescent tropical butterfly found in Mexico, Central America, northern South America, Paraguay, and Trinidad.
As its common name implies, the blue morpho butterfly’s wings are bright blue, edged with black.
The blue morpho is among the largest butterflies in the world, with wings spanning from five to eight inches.
Their vivid, iridescent blue coloring is a result of the microscopic scales on the backs of their wings, which reflect light.
The underside of the morpho’s wings, on the other hand, is a dull brown color with many eyespots, providing camouflage against predators such as birds and insects when its wings are closed.
When the blue morpho flies, the contrasting bright blue and dull brown colors flash, making it look like the morpho is appearing and disappearing.
The males’ wings are broader than those of the females and appear to be brighter in color.

One room in our former home was turned into a nursery for grandchildren when we were babysitters and they were very young. I wanted some visual stimulation for them in what was a featureless room painted white. So I made some really big paintings on sheets of masonite reinforced with strips of wood on the back.

The underside of a Morpho’s wing might seem less striking than its iridescent blue... until you notice the eyespots . These concentric circles with a shiny blue core bear a striking resemblance to owl eyes .
They serve as a defense mechanism, startling or confusing predators like birds and lizards by mimicking vertebrate eyes. Up close, the orderly arrangement of scales reveals how nature composes a recognizable image pixel by pixel.
A perfect example of intimidating mimicry through geometry and color.

*All frames are hand crafted and the quality and characteristics are much better then the common, one-sided Riker Mounts. One of the great benefits of double pane glass framing is that you can see the front and back sides of the mounted butterflies. In most cases involving Neotropical butterflies the front and back sides of the wings are distinctly different. The back many times displays a species distinct form of self defense.*
Every butterfly from Ben the Butterfly Guy comes from butterfly farms throughout the Eastern region of Peru. A unique Mother's Day gift for Mom this is not your average collection of Morpho butterflies with a bunch of common species, this frame has some of the more uncommon species like the darker blue M. rhetenor cacica, helena, and the cisseis phanodemus.
This piece is called "Morphos on the Attack" and is a stunning collection of blue butterflies are all from the Morpho butterfly family. The different patterns and hues on their blue butterfly wings are a result of a natural phenomena known as light diffraction.
In a sense, the blue morpho buttefly is blue for the same reason as the sky and the ocean where light is met by an obstacle in which not all waves of light can make it through the obstacle.
This is a piece from Ben the Butterfly Guy and has the following qualities:

The Blue Morpho rhetenor butterflies are the true blue gems of the Neotropical Amazon Rainforest. They are the brightest of the blue morpho butterflies and are absolutely stunning. There are two sub species found under the Morpho rhetenor genus that are the Morpho rhetenor cacica and Morpho rhetenor helena. They was first described by Cramer in 1775.
What makes up their blue, iridescent shine is not the pigmentation of the scales on their wings, but rather the result of light diffraction where the light that hits the wings is altered upon reflection resulting in the brilliant blue hue we perceive with our eyes.
This beautiful butterfly is also available in Black and Brown framing.
Morpho butterflies are familiar, large, electric-metallic-blue beauties that also never seem to stop moving. This one, for whatever reason, landed for a moment and actually let me get pretty close -- no telephoto here. The underwing markings, while not as amazingly-colored as the upper sides, are still beautiful, I think. (Amazonian Peru)
The Golden Zebra Plant (Sanchezia speciosa) is an evergreen shrub from Peru and Ecuador. It grows eight to nine feet tall, has opposite green leaves striped with yellow and green or purple stems. The inflorescences are terminal or axillary spikes of yellow tubular flowers with red bracts. It is popular as a houseplant and in greenhouses and tropical landscapes.
