Originally called Grovont, the area just east of Blacktail Butte, near the Gros Ventre River, provided farmable land to hardy Mormon settlers in the 1890s. Unlike most homesteaders of the period, the Mormons tended to build farming communities rather than isolated sites, leveraging shared labor and cooperative irrigation plans to strengthen their settlement.

With the establishment of Grand Teton National Park and subsequent expansion to encompass this land, most of the settling families abandoned their farms by the 1950s. Two iconic barns remain along Mormon row, this one belonging to Thomas Alma (T.A.) Moulton, and one just out of frame to the right, beyond the pink stucco home, built by John Moulton.

It's easy, in contemporary times, to think that these settlers picked their sites based on the stunning backdrop of the Teton range just beyond their pastures. But this land is rocky, heavily populated by bison and antelope, and situated on the high plains north of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with short growing seasons, harsh conditions throughout much of the year, and exceedingly spare resources. Idyllic today, it would have been an absolute labor of love and endurance to live here in their time.

Congrats on Explore!

Mormon wives. This species has one male form but several female forms. This led the Victorian entomologists to name them the Mormon swallowtails in the part-myth that Mormons have more than one wife.

Common Mormon butterfly

Papilio polytes, the common Mormon, is a common species of swallowtail butterfly widely distributed across Asia. This butterfly is known for the mimicry displayed by the numerous forms of its females which mimic inedible red-bodied swallowtails, such as the common rose and the crimson rose. Papilio castor, also called the Common Raven and Common mormon, is a tail-less black brown swallowtail butterfly with creamy white to yellow spots.

The butterfly was so active so couldn't get a good focus in hand held mode.

There are many types of butterflies and they have a range of different colors, but the brown butterfly, in particular, is connected to a meaning that speaks to many different types of people.

People have come to connect brown butterflies with being grounded or “down-to-earth,” but there are other meanings as well:

Stability

Security

Warmth

Authentic

Approachable

Unpretentious

Earthly in Nature

Many cultures also connect seeing a brown butterfly with being a greater sign for what’s to come in the future. Brown butterflies have been mentioned across the world from the Philippines to China and Eastern Europe to the Native American culture of the Americas. They are also a popular choice for tattoos as people want an image on their body to represent something meaningful to them on a personal level.

This is the Moulton Barn on historic Mormon Row in the Grand Teton National Park. I know, it's been photographed a million times....make that 1,000,001 times!

Mormon Row is located in Antelope Flats, near Jackson Hole Wyoming and has the Grand Tetons for a backdrop. There are two barns (Moulton's Barn is located about quarter of a mile away). They are picturesque and photographers flock to this site especially at sunrise and sunset.

Just one of those iconic places that if your there you need to photograph.

In gardens lush with nature's grace,

Where vibrant blooms their hues embrace,

A fluttering dance, a sight to see,

The Common Mormon, wild and free.

With wings adorned in patterns bold,

A tale of metamorphosis told,

From caterpillar, humble and small,

To winged beauty, proud and tall.

In shades of green, a splendid cloak,

Nature's artistry bespoke,

A journey through the floral maze,

In sunlit, warm and golden days.

Upon the breeze, they gracefully glide,

In valleys low and mountainside,

Their flight, a dance, a fleeting chance,

To glimpse their charm, to steal a glance.

Among the blossoms, they alight,

Sipping nectar pure and bright,

A ballet with the blooms they share,

In the fragrant, perfumed air.

Oh, Common Mormon, in wings of grace,

An emblem of life's transient trace,

Your presence whispers tales untold,

In gardens where your stories unfold

In the tapestry of time, a new year unfurls,

A canvas of hope, where joy gently swirls.

Amidst the fireworks that light up the night,

A celebration of friendship, pure and bright.

As the clock strikes twelve, and echoes resound,

Friends gather 'round, their laughter unbound.

In the warmth of embraces, old and true,

A promise of friendship, tried and blue.

Through the chapters of life, side by side,

In the laughter and tears, we'll confide.

For in the tapestry of days and years,

Friendship's melody serenades our fears.

With resolutions made, hopes in our eyes,

We march hand in hand, beneath starry skies.

Each dream we chase, a shared endeavor,

United we stand, friends forever.

New adventures beckon, on this journey we tread,

With the compass of friendship, no path we'll dread.

Through highs and lows, through joy and strife,

Together we'll dance, through the rhythm of life.

Auld Lang Syne echoes in the air,

A chorus of friendship, beyond compare.

In the tapestry of time, woven so fine,

Happy New Year, dear friends of mine!
