When a prescribed burn is completed, firefighters must make sure that all fire near the perimeter and in heavy fuels (like these stumps) is extinguished. This part of a burn is called "mop up", and takes place after the main fire has gone through an area. All of the light fuels (grass) have been burnt to ash and the area is "black". Firefighters refer to being "in the black" as a safety zone. This mop up took place on the Rau Waterfowl Production Area in the Sand Lake Wetland Management District of South Dakota.

This little guy has tagged along with me all week while I worked at our coffee shop, he was such a good boy. He helped us close down tonight and did a little mopping.

today at my elementary school was floor waxing day. the kids do pretty much all the cleaning, and this routine maintenence is no exception. (i decided that no faces would be involved so no permission was necessary).
