Rays peek through a moody blanket of rural Montana weather.

At eastern end of Buffalo Bill State Park

These lodgepole pines owe some of their dramatic appeal to the fact that their branches were burned bare in the Cascade Fire of 2008. The fire burned over 10,000 acres of forest/wilderness in the Beartooth Mountains of south-central Montana and threatened many communities near the town of Red Lodge. Several images in my photostream document the stark beauty of this wilderness region today: flic.kr/p/QApHZA

A view looking west from the National Bison's Range's Red Sleep mountain. The Flathead river in the distance.

If in the area a visit to this wildlife reserve is highly recommended.

Thanks for your visit!

that tree...Glacier NP

Four stitch capture in Glacier National Park.

Taken along the Beartooth Highway near the Montana / Wyoming border.

A fairly typical Montana scene. A Big Sky sunset behind the Bitterroot Mountains, while the valley gets irrigated.

In a break in the rain I captured this farm scene in the Flathead Valley between Big Fork and Columbia Falls, Montana.

Photo taken in Montana last fall.

La hice al bajar, muy cerca de la cima del Canto del Oso (1800 m), en el Parque Natural de Redes, en Caso (Asturias). Es un precioso lugar de la Cordillera Cantábrica.

Muchas gracias por la visita.

Happy Fence Friday

Capture made in southeast Montana with some rain showers around. Captured with the CPL filter.

Union Pacific's incredibly beautiful Montana Subdivision is one of the most remote, yet underappreciated parts of their system. Beginning from the operating hub of Pocatello, Idaho, the railroad runs along the eastern portion of the Snake River Plain before negotiating two crossings of the continental divide and arriving in Silver Bow, Montana. Idaho Falls serves as the hub for all the local freights operating over the line while crews based out of Pocatello and Dillon operate the thrice weekly road train along the entire length of the subdivision.

July 5th’s edition of the MSBPC is depicted here traveling through the lush and green summer scenery on the steep climb upgrade between Glen and Apex on a sunny July evening. The spiffy blue MRL gondolas on the head end are loaded with copper concentrate from Montana Resources in Butte. This open pit copper mining operation is owned by the Washington Group and served by the Butte Anaconda & Pacific as their only carload customer. These cars along with Autoracks and traffic from BNSF make up this day's southbound train for Pocatello.

Beautiful tones of the Clematis Montana ....

This past summer, I shot a lot of abandoned buildings - mostly old homes and school. This was one of the first places I stopped.

I tend to not use the wide 90mm lens for things like this. But I thought, basically, why not?

I shot various angles and views at this place, and even some inside shots, but this one has stuck around. Not sure why. I don't hate it or anyting. And I always like how Foma 100 depicts old woodgrain. And grass. And sky, really.

Montana

Panorámica de la montaña palentina.

I believe that this is a 1950 Chevrolet deluxe. We came across this 63 year old example parked up on Broadway in Philipsburg, Montana. Looking closely at the Bonnet (hood as it is called across the pond) this old Chevy is still earning lots keep as a mobile advertisement for a fishing tackle shop.

I have tweaked the photo a little by greying out the non period elements of the scene, dulling down the remaining colours and adding a small amount of vignette.

Tighter framing of the earlier photographed range.

Montana

July 2022

This is Chimney Rock - the one in Montana, not the one... well, not any of the other dozens of them. The Chimney Rock in the Terry Badlands was (perhaps first?) photographed by Evelyn Cameron in the late 1800s. Her photo is from a different angle - nearly opposite mine.

I talked about this intense little ten mile hike that ended with me, exhausted, cooling off in mud under the merciful shade of a few juniper trees. It's also the same hike where I sat on a cactus and hilarity ensued.

Anyway, I hope that the entire ordeal would have made Evelyn laugh.
