Monsoon 2018, Sun City West, Arizona

The monsoons have taken it up a notch in the last week and we were able to take a quick trip out a few nights ago to take some shots of the storm. We're hoping for some more storm action this week as hurricanes start picking up steam in the Pacific!

This part of the Sonoran desert received some significant rainfall from a heavy monsoon thunderstorm a few weeks ago. Flash flooding occurred in the usually-dry washes and arroyos. The rainfall triggered the Ocotillo to erupt in leaves and the sparse desert vegetation has become noticeably greener.

This photo may look like the color was changed to Sepia, but it's actually an unedited image captured inside an intense Haboob* that engulfed my neighborhood - Phoenix, Arizona

* A haboob (Arabic: هَبوب‎, translit. habūb, lit. 'blasting/drifting') is a type of intense dust storm carried on an atmospheric gravity current, also known as a weather front. Haboobs occur regularly in dry land area regions throughout the world. (See photos below)

On the way home to Tucson, I stopped by an old stompin' ground, Marsh Station, and caught this cell during sunset. Although I have plenty of shots of this cell with lightning hitting the ground, the backlit rain shaft was my favorite.
