Felix Potin was a highly successful French businessman in the mid 1800's. He built several absolutely stunning art nouveau buildings two of which are still standing. One is on rue de Rennes and has a stylized torch on it (now a Zara), the other is on boulevard de Sebastopol and is a Monoprix.
C'est amusant parfois de voir comment l'architecture arrive à se marier avec le passé d'une ville. Le Monoprix de Lyon est un bel exemple d'utilisation compte tenu des bâtiments qu'elle remplace et de son intégration, par les reflets qu'elle procure, aux paysages de la presqu'île Lyonnaise. Pris à 22h00 avec beaucoup de lumière jaune-orange, c'est une vision que je trouve assez fascinante et très amusante puisqu'on peut imaginer la transition immuable des chose : des centres villes de plus en plus moderne au dépend de l'historique.

Monoprix (1er étage), Mohamed Bourouissa Libre-Echange
From Monoprix's grab-n-go chiller, three different sandwiches in one convenient box. Chicken salad, ham and cheese, and cream cheese with chives. Kinda boring, to be honest, but I didn't feel brave enough to visit an actual restaurant.
Before work today I ran some errands, including stopping by this medieval Monoprix in Troyes for some American goodies I can't get anywhere else. In the older, mostly pedestrian part of Troyes, many of the buildings date back to the enormous fire that destroyed around 1500 homes in 1524 and were mostly rebuilt in this pans de bois (also known as maison à colombages or simply timbered) construction. I love seeing how they've respected the renovation of these buildings, which started about thirty years ago and there are only a few buildings today that are still in need of restoration. It may look tiny from the outside, but rest assured that behind this facade there is a full department store with a grocery above it!
