Monkey Mia Dolphins

Monkey Mia is a popular tourist destination located about 900 km north of Perth, Western Australia. The reserve is 25 km northeast of the town of Denham in the Shark Bay Marine Park and World Heritage Site.

The main attraction are the bottlenose dolphins that have been coming close to shore for more than fifty years.

...at Monkey Mia, Western Australia. The catamaran motored out from the wharf away from the land. The engines were turned off, the sails unfurled and raised. The cat speed along heading west into the setting sun, with only the noise of the wind in the sails.

Life is good.

After Coral Bay I drove back south, then west to Monkey Mia, where friendly dolphins come onto the shore to be fed each day.

A wonderful bird is a pelican,

His bill will hold more than his belican.

He can take in his beak Food enough for a week;

But I'm damned if I see how the helican.

The rare sight of a pair of mating green turtles. The guys piloting the boats says it they see it about once a year - and in 2016 it was on our day. Blessed.

After the sun had gone down, I rushed over to the jetty at the far end of the beach. I've been itching to get a slow shot under a wooden jetty for a while and this was perfect...

The only trick was making sure the tripod didn't sink in the wet sand - I was after slow motion water, not slow motion sinkage!

Monkey Mia - there's no monkeys but loadsa dolphins! And some stunning sunsets and scenery.

The dolphins usually turn up 1st thing in the morning so an early start is needed and a long lens is handy although they do come right into the edge. We were lucky enough to see dolphins on each trip to the beach but the 2nd day had the best weather with fantastic sunshine from dawn till dusk (which made up for the torrential 24 hour downpour the day before...).
