真ん中のモヒカンがボスのチーター、通常30匹ぐらいの群れなのですが、この群れは144匹!

ボスのストレスもハンパ無く禿げています。毛繕いされる量も影響するそうです。

力のある猿は例外無く禿げてました。

Don't be afraid they are only human. photo was taken at the Ubud National Forest in Bali, Indonesia

Photographed at the sacred monkey forest sanctuary in Padangtegal, Ubud, Bali. The monkey that lives here is called a Balinese macaque. The sacred forest serves not only as an importnat component in the spiritual and daily lives of villagers, but is also the site of research and conservation programs.

I love this monkey fabric!

Finally, something I like. I missed this - the animals, the impact, the shades.

Try this large on black.

After taking this photo he/she snatched a box of sweets from a girl's hand and ran away to eat them.

Daily Photo - Sleeping Snow Monkeys

This was not an easy place to find! (The geolocation is not exactly right.... but see below)

From JR Tokyo Station, take the JR Shinkansen to Nagano.

From JR Nagano Station, take the Nagano Dentetsu train to Yudanaka. From Yudanaka, take a bus or taxi to Kanbayashi Onsen. From there, it's about a 30 min walk to the Jigokudani Yaen-koen entrance.

I've always wanted to come see the wild snow monkeys... and so I just decided to make it happen this trip. Way up in the mountains of Japan, near Nagano, there is a troop of several dozen wild snow monkeys that roam all around a set of mountains. I didn't know if I'd be lucky enough to catch them or not... some say it is hard, and some people say it is easy. But you never really know! I set out to do my best and see what I could find.

Towards the very top of the cold mountain, there is a hot spring that churns out super-heated water that smells of sulfur. It fills this little pool and the monkeys come down during the day to lounge about, play, rest, eat, and all kinds of other wonderful things.

I spent two days on this mountainside. In the evening, I slept on the floor of a nearby ryokan, which is a traditional Japanese inn. There are about 30+ more stories about things that happened here, including eating crunchy crickets, but I will leave those to accompany future photos.

Another New Video Soon!

I just finished editing together a cool video interview I did with Alfie Goodrich here in Japan a few days ago. He has borrowed an awesome medium-format digital camera, and I asked him a bunch of questions about it. I think you will enjoy learning a little about the camera, about Alfie, and about his photography!

"If, when traveling, you have to choose between having your dignity and having a good time...choose 'a good time'. You'll rarely regret it."

That's an important philosophy of mine. I was struck with the inspiration for this photo and yes, dear reader, the thought "But dozens or even hundreds of onlookers will wonder what the hell is wrong with me" did flash through my mind...for just a fraction of a second. How long would the regret last if I didn't leave China with this photo safely on my hard drive (and safely backed up to a flash drive)?

I took about a half-dozen shots as I figured out the proper exposure for foreground and background. And then about a dozen more as I figured out the right angle and everything came together. Meanwhile, kids giggled and grownups scowled and thought "I'd really like to get my picture taken like that, but my kids would probably disown me right here on the spot."

They were free to think whatever they wanted of me. I was free to get the picture I wanted. It's part of the social compact, which remained in effect even in Communist China.
