Khao Hin Thoen Stone Park is located in Prachuap Khiri Khan province in the narrowest part of Thailand, which is only 15 kilometers wide, close to the border with Myanmar Burma. Khao Hin Theun Stone Park is a hilly area where many large granite stones are stacked naturally. The fact that these large rocks appear to remain balanced despite their size and weight reminds us of the delicate balance and stability in nature. It is a reminder of the forces of nature and the unique geological processes that create such formations. These formations are often the result of centuries of geological processes, including erosion, sedimentation, landslides and other forces. It's amazing how nature can create these complex structures over time. From the top of the hill you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Gulf of Thailand and the surrounding coastline. Just a few kilometers away, at the Singkhon checkpoint, is the border with Myanmar; a route with rich historical significance as it once served as a military trail during the late Ayutthaya period. At the summit there is also a secluded temple built between three large massive granite boulders. Essentially an open cave, this temple is a hidden gem maintained by a lone monk. This venerable monk, now 78 years old, has been living here in solitude for more than 40 years. The temple and living area are built into the large boulders. Surrounded by lush green forests, this open temple cave also offers an opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and tranquility. Hiking trails are available for those who want to enjoy the natural environment. The peaceful surroundings and natural beauty make it a popular place for meditation and contemplation.

Khao Hin Thoen Stone Park, situated near Hua Hin. The park is a remarkable natural wonder where numerous colossal boulders are ingeniously stacked, creating an extraordinary and unique attraction. As you explore, you'll discover narrow pathways that meander amidst these immense rocks and boulders. The ultimate ascent to the mountain's summit is well worth the challenging journey, as the vistas that await are genuinely awe-inspiring. From this vantage point, you can behold the Gulf of Thailand in the distance and gaze upon the picturesque landscape of the Hua Hin region below. The ascent itself is an unforgettable experience. Along the way, you'll encounter strangely shaped boulders and rocks, precariously balanced atop one another, leaving you in wonderment, as if they might teeter and tumble at any moment.

The monastery of Geghard (Armenian: Ō³Õ„Õ²Õ”Ö€Õ¤, meaning spear) is a unique architectural construction in the Kotayk province of Armenia, being partially carved out of the adjacent mountain, surrounded by cliffs. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While the main chapel was built in 1215, the monastery complex was founded in the 4th century by Gregory the Illuminator at the site of a sacred spring inside a cave. The monastery had thus been originally named Ayrivank, meaning "the Monastery of the Cave". The name commonly used for the monastery today, Geghard, or more fully Geghardavank (Ō³Õ„Õ²Õ”Ö€Õ¤Õ”Õ¾Õ”Õ¶Ö„), meaning "the Monastery of the Spear", originates from the spear which had wounded Jesus at the Crucifixion, allegedly brought to Armenia by Apostle Jude, called here Thaddeus, and stored amongst many other relics. Now it is displayed in the Echmiadzin treasury.

The spectacular towering cliffs surrounding the monastery are part of the Azat river gorge, and are included together with the monastery in the World Heritage Site listing. Some of the churches within the monastery complex are entirely dug out of the cliff rocks, others are little more than caves, while others are elaborate structures, with both architecturally complex walled sections and rooms deep inside the cliff. The combination, together with numerous engraved and free-standing khachkars is a unique sight, being one of the most frequented tourist destinations in Armenia.

The monastery was built to thank the Virgin Mary for the Portuguese victory over the Castilians in the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, fulfilling a promise of King John I of Portugal.

Schoenthal Monastery, first mentioned in 1145, includes one of the oldest churches in Switzerland. It is considered a showpiece of Romanesque architecture. Its western faƧade features ashlar masonry, a portal with a depiction of a lamb carrying a cross, and an arch supported by a lion baring its teeth on one side, and by a man on the other. The inscription on the arch reads: HIC EST RODO.

Of the murals on the inside of the church, a depiction of St. Christopher has been preserved above the gateway to the cloister dating from about 1310/20. Behind the eastern faƧade, fragments can be seen of an angel swinging a censer; these date from around 1430. The bell in the steeple was cast in Aarau in the 15th century. The deconsecrated monastery was used for various commercial purposes over a period of 500 years. As of 1986, the new owner had extensive renovations carried out in collaboration with the canton’s departments of archaeology and the preservation of historical monuments. The latter recommended using the traditional plaster made of slaked lime.

The Holy Monastery of Varlaam is the second biggest monastery in Meteora, Greece. It is located opposite of the Great Meteoron Monastery and it was founded in the mid 14th century by the exercitant Hosios Varlaam.

I took this picture from the top of a monolithic rock right in front of the Varlaam monastery. I initially tried to take a pic from the sloping side of the top of the rock, which was covered in wet moss (it was drizzling) and ends with ~50m fall, to have a more frontal view of the monastery, but as one foot skidded (I was unfortunately wearing sleek sole sailing shoes) while trying to find a "safe" position, I decided that it was too much risk for a photo and retreated to a maybe less scenic position on top. Hope the result is still pleasant.

The monastery of Monserrat is in an amazing dramatic location. It's just a gorgeous area. This is my Monserrat mega-post, with many additional images in the comments.

The church of Panagia Pantanassa is one of the most important monuments of the first half of the 15th century.

Founder of the Catholic and the monastery was protostrator Fragopoulos John, who left monograms and inscription with the name and titles of the windows on the west, the south chapel and the circular base of the dome of the narthex. The inauguration of the monastery took place in September 1428.

Panagia Pantanassa belongs to the mixed type of Mystras, its type is basilica on the ground floor and temple complex cruciform with a dome on the floor.

Intense is the Frankish influences in the apse, with gothic arches surround lobed windows in the tall steeple where trilobal openings framed by a large ā€œbrokenā€ Gothic arch, and the tall domed ceiling, accompanied by four small towers.

In the desert hills near Damascus, Marmusa is a Catholic monastery high above a Muslim land. Those steps winding up from somewhere in the bottom right corner are no fun to climb while carrying a backpack...

I arrived in Syria without a guidebook, but upon meeting some American sisters returning from a wonderful couple days spent at the monastery, I vowed it was my next stop. It's a beautiful place, surrounded by mountains, great place to be solitary if you choose to be. There are generally a few other travelers as well, all of whom are offered hospitality in the monastery. Some stay for weeks, helping with chores. One of my favorite travel experiences ever.

Diskit Monastery also known as Deskit Gompa or Diskit Gompa is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh, northern India. It belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It was founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsong Khapa, founder of Gelugpa, in the 14th century.
