Took this shot early on New Years day’s morning 2019. Taken from the car window,

Cropped in to form this portrait.

Taken in Scotland

This red stag knew I was behind it in my car, and just didn't care that he was holding me up - total nonchalance.

Another shot from the 2021 discard pile. My camera just wasn't set up for a wildlife image and the final result from a rushed hand-held shot out of the car window is a little blurry. However, it shows two things -

1. I'm not a wildlife photographer; taking a blurry picture of a stag's behind is not going to win any awards.

2. I'm very lucky to live here.

On our way to the Cairngorms and we came across this gorgeous and famous building surrounded by a covering of mist across Loch Laggan. This is Ardverikie House and is famous for having starred as 'Glenbogle Castle' in the long running BBC Drama, 'Monarch of the Glen' Ardverikie House is situated on the shores of Loch Laggan.

Ardverikie House was built in the Scottish Baronial style in 1878 after the original house was destroyed by fire. The house and estate has been used as a film location many times but was most well known as the Glenbogle Estate in the BBC series Monarch of the Glen.

Red Deer Stags of Strathglass, Highlands of Scotland

So I keep seeing pictures of Scotland. My brother put one up from our three day adventure in February earlier today. This tree at Milarrochy is a bit special. So special that lots of people go and take photos of it. We paid our own homage to this spot on a Thursday afternoon not long before sunset. Just a stunning location and beautiful weather to simply gaze and breathe in the wonderful Loch Lomond.

Back to Scotland next year - this time to Edinburgh to run my second marathon at the tender age of 53. Needless to say the camera will be packed into my flight bag.

.

Faster than fairies, faster than witches,

Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches;

And charging along like troops in a battle,

All through the meadows the horses and cattle:

All of the sights of the hill and the plain

Fly as thick as driving rain;

And ever again, in the wink of an eye,

Painted stations whistle by.

Here is a child who clambers and scrambles,

All by himself and gathering brambles;

Here is a tramp who stands and gazes;

And there is the green for stringing the daisies!

Here is a cart run away in the road

Lumping along with man and load;

And here is a mill and there is a river:

Each a glimpse and gone for ever!

A nice wee church and burial ground on the road to the west.

As a young boy I can remember looking at a Polaroid picture of an American woman standing against the back wall of this church. Clearly visible beside her was a ghostly figure in robes with his hand resting on her shoulder.

Loch Laggan is a freshwater loch situated approximately 6

1⁄2 miles west of Dalwhinnie in the Scottish Highlands. The loch has an irregular shape, runs nearly northeast to southwest and is approximately 7 miles in length. It has an average depth of 68 ft and is 174 ft at its deepest. The eastern end of the loch features the largest freshwater beach in Britain. Since 1934 Loch Laggan has been part of the Lochaber hydro-electric scheme. At the northeast end of the loch is the hamlet of Kinloch Laggan.

The loch featured in the popular BBC series Monarch of the Glen as Loch Bogle.

Ardverikie House is a 19th-century Scottish baronial house in Kinloch Laggan, Newtonmore, Inverness-shire, Scottish Highlands. The house was made famous as the fictional Glenbogle estate in the BBC series Monarch of the Glen.

The lands historically belonged to Clan Macpherson. The 20th chief, Ewen Macpherson, leased Benalder and Ardverikie in 1844 to The 2nd Marquess of Abercorn, an Ulster-Scots peer, "one of the trend setters in the emerging interest in deer stalking in Scotland." The Marquess expanded the original shooting lodge. He served as Groom of the Stool to Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, who along with the prince spent three weeks at Ardverikie in the late summer of 1847.

In 1860, Lord Abercorn transferred the lease to Lord Henry Bentinck, another stalking enthusiast, who lived there until his death in 1870.

Sir John Ramsden purchased the Ardverikie and Benalder forests in 1871 for £107,500 (equivalent to £10,083,219 in 2019). In 1873, the house was destroyed by fire, and was rebuilt from 1874 to 1878. It was rebuilt in the popular style of Scottish baronial architecture, designed by the architect John Rhind.

Ramsden's son, Sir John Frecheville Ramsden, inherited the lands after his father's death in 1914. The majority of the land was sold off following the two World Wars, and in 1956 Sir John transferred the Ardverikie Estate to a family company under the chairmanship of his son, Sir William Pennington-Ramsden. The company, Ardverikie Estate Limited, still owns and manages the estate today. The estate does business renting cottages and letting the property for weddings.

Filming location

Ardverikie House and its estate have been used as a location for filming. It is most recognisable as the Glenbogle Estate in the BBC series Monarch of the Glen, that ran for seven series from 2000 to 2005. It was also used in Miss Marple: A Murder is Announced (1985), the films Mrs Brown (1997), Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011), and Outlaw King (2018). The estate has been featured in the series Outlander, and in the first, second, & fourth seasons of the Netflix drama The Crown, standing in for the Balmoral Estate.

During summer 2019, filming of No Time to Die was taking place in the town of Aviemore and the surrounding Cairngorms National Park with some scenes shot at the Ardverikie Estate.

In October 2020 filming for the The Grand Tour special "Lochdown" took place at Ardverikie House, with presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May staying the night on the estate. [wikipedia]

A long exposure as the sun sets over Loch Laggan to the East of Fort William. It wasn't the most exciting of sunsets but as we'd had some heavy weather during the day there was some interesting clouds. Tucked in the trees opposite is Ardverikie House, the Scots Baronial castle used in the television series Monarch of the Glen.

Loch an Eilein is a freshwater loch in the Rothiemurchus Forest about 3 miles (5 km) south of Aviemore, in the Scottish Highlands.

There's a small island on the loch, on which a castle was built in either the 13th/14th or 15th century, depending on which account you read! In more recent times the ruins of the castle featured as the island graveyard in series 1 of BBC TV’s ‘Monarch of the Glen’.

There's a popular 3 mile path round the loch which sits in the shadow of the Cairngorm mountains. In 2010 the loch was voted Britain’s Favourite Picnic Spot.

The area near the loch is popular with birdwatchers and (according to Wikipedia) crested tit, redstart, spotted flycatcher, tree pipit, red-throated diver, common sandpiper, whinchat, and the occasional merlin can be seen.
