Molding several mods of the Newborn head/torso sculpt (Alien: Resurrection).

I initially wanted to shoot some video of the process but the ten-dollar tripod I purchased from Amazon broke and went sailing across the room so that's not going to happen. Ah well, you get what you paid for LOL! I'll try again later - got a bunch more molds to make here soon.

Sculpt progress on the Alien Queen - ALIENS 86 - 1:18 scale.

Molding time! Time to mold the first of many parts that will be made to create this beautiful beast. First piece for replication will be the carapace (crown). This will be a two part mold, and as usual, I run out of product before I have a chance to finish! :(

I got the first half of the molding process complete - have ordered more material and it should be in my hands a couple days from now.

Built the mold box from foam core and used monster clay for the blocking. Applied a brushing of mold material (Smooth-On Mold Star 15 Slow) over the entire sculpt and surface, then made my pour. Several hours later, inverted the mold and cleared the monster clay to begin the second phase....coming later this week.

Will add more venting prior to doing my first cast. Much more to come...got some painting to do!!!

Molding material: Smooth-On MoldStar 30 Platinum-Cure Silicone

The paraffin wax is suspended in this mold, it rests on the small shelves on either side of the central well. Beneath it here is "mold star 15" silicone rubber

pour a thin layer of moldstar into the base mold. It needs to be thin or it will cover the sides of the robot where the tubing will be inserted into. Lower the ecoflex body with the channel covers into this fresh, uncured (wet) moldstar base.

ecoflex is poured on top of the paraffin and moldstar rubber via the "bombs away" method onto the uncured (freshly poured) mold star 15. also shown are various pieces used in fabrication

these covers are glued into place with a very light layer of uncured ecoflex or moldstar silicone rubber

these cured "moldstar" pieces cover the channels but allow for the still-exposed areas of ecoflex to contact and adhere with uncured moldstar rubber in another mold (in the next step).

bubbles can easily later be filled in

This is critical. The interface between the moldstar and ecoflex is VERY strong and did not detach during inflation or prodding. Thats very encouraging.

these are to keep uncured moldstar silicone in the next step from flowing into the tubing

the "seam" where the ecoflex body meets the moldstar base may hold air at this point but it is likely that it will "blow out" with repeated use. We need to cover and reinforce that seam.

I'm starting to add a beauty coat to most molds now. Guaranteeing the detail is captured with Moldstar 20T before sticking it in the mother mold jacket makes it less worrisome.
