Qutub Minar, at 74 meters, is the tallest brick minaret in the world, and the second tallest minar in India after Fateh Burj at Mohali. Qutub Minar, along with the ancient and medieval monuments surrounding it, form the Qutb Complex, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tower is located in the Mehrauli area of Delhi, India. Made of red sandstone and marble, Qutub Minar is a 73 meter tall tapering tower with a diameter measuring 14.32 meters at the base and 2.75 meters at the peak. Inside the tower, a circular staircase with 379 steps leads to the top. Qutub Minar station is the closest station on the Delhi Metro.

In 1200 CE, Qutub-ud-Din Aibak, the founder of the Delhi Sultanate started construction of the Qutub Minar. In 1220, Aibak's successor and son-in-law Iltutmish added three storeys to the tower. In 1369, lightning struck the top storey, destroying it completely and Firoz Shah Tughlaq carried out restoration work replacing the damaged storey with two new storeys, made of red sandstone and white marble.

Qutub Minar is surrounded by several historically significant monuments, which are historically connected with the tower and are part of the Qutb Complex. These include the Iron Pillar of Delhi, Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, Alai Darwaza, the Tomb of Iltutmish, Alai Minar, Ala-ud-din's Madrasa and Tomb, and the Tomb of Imam Zamin. Other minor monuments include Major Smith's Cupola and Sanderson's Sundial.

HISTORY

The construction of Qutub Minar was commissioned by Qutub-ud-Din Aibak, the founder of the Delhi Sultanate in 1199 AD. The minar was built on the ruins of the Lal Kot, the Red Citadel in the city of Dhillika. Aibak's successor Iltutmish added three more storeys to complete the tower.

It has not been established with certainty whether Qutub Minar has been named after Qutbu l-Din Aibak, the emperor who commissioned its construction or Qutbuddin Bakhtiar kaki, the famous Sufi saint.

The culture of tower architecture was established in India before the arrival of the Turks. However, there is no evidence on record to confirm that the Qutb Minar was inspired or influenced by earlier Rajput towers. Numerous inscriptions in Parso-Arabic and Nagari characters in different sections of the Qutb Minar reveal the history of its construction. According to the inscriptions on its surface it was repaired by Firoz Shah Tughlaq (1351–89) and Sikandar Lodi (1489–1517).

The Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, located to the north of Qutb Minar, was built by Qutbu l-Din Aibak in 1192. It is one of the earliest surviving mosque in the Indian subcontinent. Later, an arched screen was erected and the mosque was enlarged by Iltutmish (1210–35) and Ala-ud-din Khilji.

The topmost storey was damaged by lightning in 1368 A.D. and was rebuilt by Firoz Shah Tughlaq. Firoz Shah Tughlaq built two floors one of which can be distinguished easily as it was built of white marble. In 1505, an earthquake damaged Qutb Minar and the damage was repaired by Sikandar Lodi. On 1 August 1803, a major earthquake again caused serious damage to Qutb Minar. Major Robert Smith of the British Indian Army renovated the tower in 1828 and installed a cupola to the top of Qutb Minar. The cupola was later taken down under instructions from Lord Hardinge, then Governor General of India and was installed to the east of Qutb Minar, where it rests now.

ARCHITECTURE

The Minar is made of red sandstone covered with intricate carvings and verses from the Qur'an. The Minar comprises several superposed flanged and cylindrical shafts, separated be balconies carried on Muqarnas corbels. The first three storeys are made of red sandstone; the fourth and fifth storeys are of marble and sandstone. At the foot of the tower is the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque. The minar tilts just over 60 cm from the vertical, which is considered to be within safe limits, although experts have stated that monitoring is needed in case rainwater seepage further weakens the foundation.

The nearby 7 meters high Iron Pillar from Gupta empire is a metallurgical curiosity. The pillar standing in the Qutb complex has Brahmic inscriptions on it and predates the Islamic minar.

ACCIDENT

Before 1974, the general public was allowed access to the top of the minar accessed through a narrow staircase. On 4 December 1981, 45 people were killed in the stampede that followed an electricity failure that plunged the tower's staircase into darkness. Most of the victims were children because, at the time school children were allowed free access to historical monuments on Fridays. Subsequently, public access to the inside of the tower has been banned.

IN POPULARE CULTURE

Bollywood actor and director Dev Anand wanted to shoot the song Dil Ka Bhanwar Kare Pukar from his movie Tere Ghar Ke Samne inside the minar. However, the cameras in that era were too big to fit inside the tower's narrow passage, and the song was shot inside a replica of the tower instead. The site served as the pitstop of the second leg of the second season of The Amazing Race Australia, the Australian version of the Emmy-winning series The Amazing Race. This is the first Indian monument to have an E-ticket facility.

A picture of the minaret is featured on the Travel Cards issued by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. A recently launched start-up in collaboration with Archaeological survey of India has made a 360 degree walkthrough of Qutub minar available.

Leisure time for these traditional performers soon after completing their show at a fair in SAS Nagar, MOHALI

Mohali - 18 November 2013

BJP National Secretary Kisan Morcha and in-charge of party affairs, Himachal Pradesh Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal said people of the country had made their mind to elect Narinder Modi-led NDA government in the 2014 general elections to get rid of the scandal-laden UPA government.

Talking with the media persons here today Grewal added that the UPA government had given nothing to the nation except poverty, unemployment, inflation, corruption and scandals.

"Congress-led UPA government had proved a failure on all fronts and people will dethrone them in the coming general elections,"he said.

The BJP leader expressed concern over the reports of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa following the footsteps of Robert Vadera regarding purchasing government lands.

Grewal demanded that Punjab government should hold a thorough probe into the land deals of Bajwa, his younger brother Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa and his sister-in law.

He said most of the ministers of Manmohan Singh cabinet were involved in various scams and they would not be able to face the masses before the parliamentary elections. He claimed that the people wanted a change in the government at the Centre. "The SAD-BJP alliance will win all the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab in the upcoming general polls,"he added.

Petrol Pump Dealers Association Punjab ( PPDAP ), at a conference held here today, asked the Punjab Government to reduce VAT from petroleum prices. The Association led by Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal revealed that all neighbouring states had been charging less VAT than Punjab which is affecting the sale of petrol in Punjab. Paramjit Singh Doaba, president, PPDAP, informed that Haryana was charging 20.5 per cent, Himachal Pradesh was charging 24 per cent and Chandigarh had been charging 22 per cent VAT, whereas, Punjab had been charging 31 per cent VAT on petroleum. “More than 1,800 petrol pumps are directly affected form this practice. We assure that the revenue collections of the government will not be affected if it reduces VAT from petroleum,” Doaba said.

Sukhmiderpal Singh Grewal National Secretary of Federation of All India Petroleum Traders, demanded to exempt the property tax on petrol pumps. The petrol pump owners opposed the move of the Forest Department of issuing notices to petrol pump owners to pay for land being used for entry of vehicles. Outside the Verka Milk Plant, in the town of Mohali in India’s breadbasket state of Punjab, is the ‘Verka Milk Bar cum Fast Food Complex’. It’s more like a Milk Emporium. From 6 in the morning till 10 in the evening every day, day in, day out, the human traffic walking up to the windows to buy milk in all its guises---fresh milk, curd, butter, ghee, paneer, milk shakes, milk whey, milk powder, milk sweets, salted and sugared lassis, sweetened flavoured milk drinks, ice creams---never stops (photo credit: ILRI/Susan MacMillan).

New Delhi, February 21, 2009

Bharatiya Janta Party National President Rajnath Singh said today the party’s electoral alliance with Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) would surely materialise. “There is no reason as to why it (the alliance) should not happen. We are optimistic,” Singh said in the capital today at BJP Investor Cell while addressing the Adhiveshan delegates at VP House, New Delhi. The tie up is important for the BJP, which is banking on the RLD’s support for Rajnath Singh’s victory from Ghaziabad in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The RLD wields influence in this area, considered a bastion of RLD chief’s father and former Prime Minister Choudhury Charan Singh.

The BJP, meanwhile, also demanded a joint parliamentary committee probe into the Satyam scam - a matter it had yesterday vehemently argued in the Lok Sabha while opening the debate on the Interim Budget. “Is the government trying to protect Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister by shying away from its responsibility of constituting a JPC on the matter?” BJP’s Ananth Kumar had yesterday asked. Rajnath went a step further, accusing the UPA of shattering India’s economy which was growing at a rate of 8.4 per cent during the NDA regime. “The growth rate is down to 6.5 per cent. When Atalji demitted office, the growth rate was stable at 8.4 per cent. After five years, the UPA has destroyed the economy, causing millions of job losses. Small investors have been wiped out,” Rajnath said, at an investors’ meet here. He also remembered that the NDA had sustained the economic growth in the face of economic sanctions imposed by the US, post Pokharan-II and the Kargil War. “If voted to power, we will put in place an effective regulatory system to prevent Satyam like frauds,” he said. The BJP meanwhile again urged for 4 per cent interest rate on farm loans, with Rajnath saying the party favoured a policy of providing farm subsidies directly to farmers instead of industrial house. “Farmers should get their subsidy money directly, in their bank accounts, not through industries,” he said Sh. Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal, Punjab State President, BJP Investor Cell said that UPA govt. has failed on all fronts of the economy. Grewal expressed the concerns of the retrenchments and job cuts, lacs of people/employees has been shown the door, thousands of shops, industries has been close down, crores of rupees of the small investor has been lost in the share market. In the result investors have lost faith in capital market which has turned into casino. Further he expressed his concerns on weakening of rupee, increasing fiscal deficit and declining exports. It appears that the UPA govt. is not concerned in the economy of the country. At present, it appears there is no finance minister with the UPA govt. while country is going into deepest of the recession. There has been contradictions in the statements of ministers of the UPA govt. which reflects depression and lack of confidence in this govt. Today The BJP investor Cell has organized Niveshak Sanklap Maha Adhiveshan of delegates in worthy Leadership Of Sh. Arun Singh National Convenor, from across the country to discuss 11 point agenda of misconceived, misdirected and mismanaged economy by the UPA govt. From the massive Maha Adhiveshan delegates will return to respective states and will convess for the party in the Lok Sabha Elections for the party candidates. At this time Deepak Sharma Malseehian, Ajay Gupta Mohali, Nipun Sharma Hoshiarpur, Sandeep Tony Jaitu, Rajesh Pathak Bittu Dhandari, Chamkaur Singh Pandher Kohara, Babu Vijaymal Doraha, Ramandeep Singh, Devinder Singh, Harmeet Singh Sonu, Harminder Singh Neetu, Ajay Gupta, Arun Sharma along with 500 BJP Investor Cell Delegates from Punjab were also present.
