The SPMTs-- that's Self-Propelled Modular Transporters-- are in place and awaiting marching orders. These strong machines, four of them in total, will lift the bridge from its temporary supports and drive it down Route 9 this weekend. The machines are the large, blue pieces of equipment in the photo.
First, crews need to demolish the old bridge, Then they will add new pier and abutment caps. Once those are in place, the 530-ton bridge will take its short journey down Route 9 and be lowered by the SPMTs into place.
