A glimpse of the outside performance area at The Sir Ken Dodd Performance Garden, Shakespeare of the North, Prescot.

12th February 2022 :

I noticed that the house almost opposite us was having some work done on their front garden. What I hoped was that they'd leave the plants that were already there in place.

No chance, they've dug up almost everything. Hydrangeas, Bear's Breaches ~ Acanthus mollis and the Montbretia ~ Crocosmia, all gone from the front of this photo, (where I'm standing).

At the back on the right there is now a raised bed, all the beautiful white, pink and blue bells ~ Hyacinthoides × massartiana. (French-Spanish) have gone too. Wish I'd thought of asking for some bulbs before they binned them all. Not a happy sight. :(

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Grays, Essex*. Here are the details of the project

The 'Tropical Garden' in Grays, Essex RM17

BRIEF:

The space was an odd yet interestingly shaped garden, consisting primarily of lawn with good, sound fences. The client was concerned with privacy, as the houses on the opposite side of the road overlooked the front of the garden. In creative terms, the client wanted something contemporary and stylish, low maintenance, with ample space for entertaining.

SOLUTION:

The finished product is a space that is stylish and dynamic, yet at the same time warm and welcoming. To improve privacy, the entire boundary was augmented with bamboo screening. The majority of the space was laid with decking, split into sections set at angles to each other to make the most of the sun throughout the day.

The first decked area, directly outside the house, features a large hot tub spa to the left, which is shielded from view from the street by a split bamboo screen. A second area of decking runs on the left hand side down and across the space, to join a third and final area of decking towards the bottom of the garden.

A large flowerbed down the right of the space is graced with a selection of lush jungle giants, bold architectural foliage and big leafy specimens in a variety of textures. Striking bespoke stainless steel planters line the decking along the left of the space, planted with tall bamboo to provide additional screening. The slightly imposing nature of these planters is softened by the addition of Cordyline australis planted through cut-outs in the decking between one planter and the next.

The end section of decking features a beautiful stainless steel 'wall of water'. Set against the backdrop of bamboo screening, it provides an attractive and arresting focal point, whilst hiding the very bottom of the garden from view. Simple lighting, comprising low voltage spots in the bed, a line of sunken deck lights to illuminate the steel planters, and elegant steel bollards to demark the edge of the middle section of decking, serves to provide a gentle ambient wash for intimate nocturnal entertaining.

TESTIMONIAL:

"A very big thank you to all the team at Earth Designs for transforming my garden from a dull unwelcoming space into a vibrant, contemporary living area. My requirement was to create a garden that was low maintenance and contemporary, and which reflected my taste and the style of my house.

I was seeking a garden that would work well for both entertaining in the evening and relaxing during the day. I am very pleased that my new garden works on both counts and would be pleased to recommend Earth Designs both in terms of the design and attention to detail during the installation.

I now have a fun and stylish garden which looks good both night and day and fits in well with my lifestyle."

A garden created by Dutch designer Piet Oudolf was planted on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (Germany) in May 2020. The picture shows an amazing water fountain (named "Ruisseau") designed by Erwan & Ronan Bouroullec. The fountain is 16 meters long. Portuguese marble was used to manufacture it.

Thank you for your visits / comments / faves!

Visually, the finished look is one of pure line with few design elements. The atmosphere is one of pure tranquillity during the day; the reflection of sky in the water and very little to distract the eye. At night the lighting scheme creates a magical pathway fading into the distance, and always there is the gentle sound of running water.

Part of a larger scheme, these clients wanted an ultra-simple, minimalist waterfeature on two levels. The main material used was a pale cream Travertine detailed with a dark slate-grey.

At the lower level, a canal runs across the garden. The main steps are accessed by stepping stones across the water.

The upper level features two rills. Water flows away from the house and cascades via two stainless steel waterfalls onto the lower level beyond, aerating and purifying. The paving features LED flush lighting to highlight the edge of the scheme and the steps and all three bodies of water are floodlit discreetly below the water surface.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Crouch End, London*. Here are the details of the project

The Contemporary Garden in Crouch End, London

BRIEF:

The clients requested a family garden, to include a lawn for the kids to play and a separate sophisticated dining area for entertaining. A large barbeque was important, as well as a water feature to include fish. One problem to overcome was an unfavourable view of the neighbour’s sheds, which needed to be masked without raising the height of the boundary fencing. The clients also wished to retain a children’s playhouse at the end of the garden.

SOLUTION:

Flooring throughout this space was in rectangular dark slate tiles laid in a stretcher bond pattern to match the interior of the house. The main section of the garden benefits from a variety of bespoke features designed to make maximum use of the space. A major focus of the garden is a water feature consisting of a sunken rectangular pool bisecting the space. Deep and wide enough to allow the client to add fish at a later date, this pool is topped with removable walk-over grating and fed from the left side by a stainless steel water blade installed into the front of a decorative tower constructed from yellow stock brick, railway sleepers, coloured perspex and slate.

Seating in the garden is provided by two large ‘sofas’ constructed from chunky railway sleepers, positioned to face each other across the water feature rill. The sofas are complemented by a matching coffee-style table straddling the rill between them. Large (2 metre clear stem) cordylines planted in the ground at either end of each sofa, frame the seating to give the area a sense of privacy and seclusion.

To the right of the seating area and opposite the stainless sleet blade, there is a bespoke barbecue/fireplace. Constructed from yellow stock brick and utilising the existing stone lintel, this barbeque features two separate cooking areas with space between for a firepit.

The main area of the garden is screened from the remainder of the space by a tall, wide ‘shelving unit’ screen. Constructed from railway sleepers, this structure features individual alcoves which have been filled with a variety of decorative materials, perspex screens and ornamentation. Directly in front of this there is a flush level herb bed.

Beyond the shelving unit screen is the second, child-friendly section of the space. This comprises a rectangular section of artificial lawn edged by a slate paved pathway, with the playhouse nestled within the centre of a planting bed at the end of the garden.

Planting in the second section of the garden includes stepover fruit trees down either side, back planted by climbers. In addition, an Acer and a Mimosa were planted around the children’s playhouse. The pathway around the lawn offers the clients opportunity to place planted pots at a later date if required.

Climbers conceal the existing fence on the left hand side, with a bespoke screen (approximately 6 metres long) comprising tall timber posts joined with stainless steel tension wire and decorated with small panels of coloured perspex was erected above the top of the fence to break up the view of the buildings to the left.

With wishes of a lovley end of the week for you!

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Wapping, London*. Here are the details of the project

The Funky Roof Terrace garden in Wapping, London

BRIEF:

The clients wanted to change a tired but modern balcony terrace overlooking Tower Bridge on the Thames into a fun but sophisticated area for relaxation and entertaining. The flat is in a block with very tight restrictions on what can and cannot be done to its exterior appearance. Achieving the desired effect within these restraints required a degree of lateral thinking and ingenuity.

SOLUTION:

This riverside terrace garden is been designed with relaxation and sophistication in mind. The focus is on simplicity, combining high-quality features with a hint of playfulness, to avoid detracting from the magnificent views of the Thames and Tower Bridge beyond. Yellow Balau smooth planed hardwood decking provides a contemporary finish to the flooring throughout, arranged to draw the eye out across the river and chosen to reflect the terrace’s waterside character.

To the left hand side of the terrace a slightly raised deck provides a platform for a lounge area, featuring a large mattress weatherproof mattress and cushions, from which to relax and enjoy the view of the bridge. A small waterproof storage area beneath this platform keeps the cushions dry and clean over the winter months. A stunning illuminated cube water feature, flanked on either side by eye-catching Cordylines contained in self-illuminated planters, were installed along the rear boundary wall directly opposite the patio doors, to create an impressive welcome to the space.

Further framing to the terrace is provided by an illuminated planter installed beside both of the pillars supporting the balcony of the flat above. Planting was selected for low maintenance, all year interest and wind tolerance. The right hand side of the terrace forms the main dining area.

Featuring funky illuminated curved seating and three bespoke mobile decking stools around a central glass topped illuminated table, the area offers ample opportunity for alfresco entertaining both day and night. Groups of column lights of varying heights are set adjacent to the dining area and on the raised platform. The lighting focal point is the fun sculptural 6-pointed stars.

TESTIMONIALS:

“Although we had a good sized patio area with fantastic views over Tower Bridge, the space simply didn't work for us and we rarely used it. The design process was very interactive. We had a really open exchange of ideas, and relied heavily on Katrina's creativity and imagination to overcome some restrictive lease requirements. The brief to the team was to give the space a cool and modern 'Ibiza style' look and feel which would be suitable for both entertaining and relaxing. This was primarily achieved through the clever use of sculptural (and functional) lighting and bold colours.”

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Balham, London*. Here are the details of the project

The Outside Room Garden in Balham, London SW12

BRIEF:

The space was formerly a double garage nestled between two houses. The roof had been removed, leaving behind a worn concrete and cobble floor, garage doors, and two rusted steel girders crossing the space. In creative terms, the brief was fairly open: to design a clean and contemporary space, suitable for entertaining yet functional enough to accommodate off-street parking for a family car.

SOLUTION:

The design was inspired by the strong sense of enclosure to the space, taking elements of a typical lounge to create something that was very much an exterior room. New railway sleepers, chosen for their clean look and contemporary feel, featured heavily as a construction material.

These were used to create raised beds around the boundaries, an integrated 'sofa' and coffee table, and a dresser-style shelving unit down one side of the space. Judicious lighting within the beds and shelving units served to create ambient lighting similar to that found in a well-planned drawing room.

The 'living room' theme was further enhanced by the inclusion of a bespoke wrought iron chandelier hanging from the cross-point of the girders. To allow for off-street parking, the existing garage doors were replaced with two large bespoke wooden gates, and pattern-imprinted concrete was laid to provide attractive and durable flooring. Planting was used to blur the linear appearance of the space, with architectural, spiky evergreens and lush, leafy climbers taking pride of place. A water feature constructed from a Heath Robinson-esque series of copper piping and funnels provided the finishing touch to the garden.

TESTIMONIAL:

"The phrase 'making a silk purse from a sow's ear' comes to mind! What we had grown used to fondly referring to as 'The Prison Yard' is now a tropical oasis that gets more use than any other "room" in the house. Katrina and her team interpreted our brief perfectly and delivered, through wind, rain, and on one notable occasion a violent thunderstorm, our perfect garden. We can't thank them enough for what is, as one old chap commented in passing, 'The most remarkable transformation I have ever seen'. Thank you. We love it!"

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Stoke Newington, London here are the details on the project

The Moroccan Courtyard Garden in

Stoke Newington, London

BRIEF:

The outside space was in poor condition when the current owners moved into the property and a rat problem was evident. The brief was to provide a family space that was low maintenance and that would clean up the area to create a light and friendly garden. Given the relatively small size of the garden and overhead trees, there was a preference to create hard landscaping over the majority of the area rather than incorporate a lawn.

SOLUTION:

This design draws on Moroccan influences and creates a well laid out space that is fresh and inviting. Flooring in the space consists of multi-coloured African slate laid in a stretcher pattern, interspersed with the occasional Moroccan floor tile. Under the kitchen window is a butcher block housing a Belfast sink allowing the client the opportunity for outside water. Directly outside the back door, flanked either side by flush planting beds, there is a railway sleeper sofa-style seat with bespoke waterproof cushions.

This area is enclosed with a purpose-built timber pergola with a rusted iron mesh ‘roof’. The main seating area of the garden consists of rendered block raised beds, painted white and adorned with a Moroccan tile border around the top, upon which L-shaped ‘suspended’ railway sleeper benches are fixed. This area also benefits from a railway sleeper table, a large, ornate Moroccan-style water fountain water feature against the right hand wall and a wrought iron chiminea in the back bed to serve as barbeque and heater. The existing large laurel was retained and the existing ivy was thinned and conditioned. The inclusion of a large tree fern at the entrance to the seating area makes a formal entrance to the space.

The remainder of the planting consists of oranges and greens with a selection of climbers, evergreens and herbaceous perennials selected to give year round interest. The space is completed by the inclusion of a comprehensive lighting scheme. The pergola is illuminated with a fairy light net over the top.

The main seating area benefits from stylish teak and stainless steel bollard lights installed on top of the raised bed walls and rope lights running along the underside of the seats, with a double weatherproof socket providing power for the client to plug in electrical equipment if required. Finally, a series of low voltage lights throughout the planting beds give the garden a subtle overall glow while serving to highlight individual plant specimens.

TESTIMONIALS:

“We are delighted with our garden and Earth Designs were great. Katrina has provided us with a clean and spacious retreat.”

The garden is on two levels with the main area adjoining the house containing two separate areas for dining and for entertaining and relaxation. Flooring throughout is large rectangular cream travertine paving.

The main focal point of the garden is a large timber structure with integrated shelving and cream travertine topped fixed bench seating around the base. This structure has two open doorways to allow entry from different points in the space, and is ornamented on all sides with a selection of decorative fillers placed within individual alcoves. A dining area to the right of the space features a raised bed rendered block bed on which a long railway sleeper bench seat has been fixed. Three tall tapering slate planters on the opposite side to the dining area give a sense of balance to the space.

The back section of the space is on a higher level and is accessed by wide steps to the right of the cube structure. The upper garden features an artificial lawn surrounded by a travertine tiled pathway. The focal point of the upper garden is a large garden office in the bottom right hand corner.

Planting in the space is simple, low maintenance and elegant, featuring box balls and box hedging in the lower garden and tall willowy bamboo in the upper garden.

The garden is elegantly lit throughout. A set of low voltage downlighters illuminate individual alcoves in the timber cube, while stainless steel spotlights on the side wall and on each of the four corners of the cube provide ample light to the seating and dining areas. In-ground uplighters serve to highlight the planters to the left hand side and a series of low voltage lights give a calming glow to the upper garden.

There was to be a lawn for football kickabouts, an area to place his bbq, ample provision for dining, it needed to be aesthetically pleasing with a clean, uncluttered appearance, and above all it had to be as low maintenance as possible.

SOLUTION:

The main focus of the space is a seating area in the top right corner consisting of an L-shaped fixed bench backed by an L-shaped raised bed, plus a freestanding square table and several cube stools. The bench benefits from armrests at each end and is framed on either side by low planters containing quirky ‘Buxus sempervirens’. Table, seats, planters and raised bed are all constructed from thick railway sleepers. Flooring in this area comprises Chinese natural slate in a formal lay pattern edged with rectangular granite setts laid in a single ‘soldier’ course (i.e. laid side to side rather than end to end.)

Flooring in the remainder of the space is divided between an area of artificial turf with horizontal sunken railway sleeper edging, and ornamental paving directly outside the back door consisting of a series of sunken railway sleepers of decreasing lengths interspersed with a decorative aggregate and occasional granite setts.

Planting in the space consists of subtle ferns and big glossy leaves, with a flush bed running along the back of the house and along the left boundary. The walls of the adjoining houses are adorned with a variety of climbers, whilst succulent ‘Fatsia japonica’ and a variety of ferns, including 'Dicksonia antarctica‘ (tree fern) give the garden a soft jungle feel

TESTIMONIAL:

"Very pleased with the creative use of space and we take every opportunity to use our garden whenever we can."

The Small Chic Garden in Walthamstowm, East London

BRIEF:

This L-shaped garden had been neglected for some time before the current owner moved to the property. She desired a contemporary sleek look that would complement her newly decorated interior and enhance the new extension. A seating area and water feature were two key requirements, as was the need to make the space feel larger after the completion of the extension.

SOLUTION:

The garden features a decorative concrete and granite patio laid in a diagonal ‘wave’ pattern that appears to travel through the extension to create the illusion of spaciousness. Lines of beige granite setts break up the decorative concrete paving, providing continuity and a sense of movement through the garden. In the left hand corner an ellipse of yellow balau decking, backed by a raised brick planter, provides space for a cafe style table and chairs on which to enjoy both morning and afternoon sunshine.

The rear and left hand boundaries were replaced to provide a uniform and attractive backdrop to the garden, with a high yellow stock brick wall constructed along the rear boundary and a section of the side boundary. A striking, back-lit stainless steel water blade installed in the boundary wall in the right hand corner of the space cascades into a sunken reservoir mulched with Scottish beach pebbles.

A narrow rill, also mulched with Scottish pebbles, snakes across the space to separate the decking and paved areas. Yellow groove bamboo and a luscious green cordyline provide striking feature planting around the decking, with evergreen flowering climbers adorning the boundary fences. A mixture of evergreen succulent rock plants give an understated sense of coastal living, in between which a select group of perennials appear to herald the changing seasons.

TESTIMONIALS:

“After building the extension I was concerned that my outdoor space had been reduced dramatically, but Katrina’s design has made the most of every inch of it. The wave pattern is a great talking point with guests as well! I am really pleased with the result Earth Designs has created.”

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Leyton, London*. Here are the details of the project

The Kitchen Garden in Leyron, London E10

BRIEF:

This site was an open corner plot in an end of terrace house. Its exposed aspect meant that it suffered from a lack of shade and was adversely affected by strong wind. An awkward shape, it had fairly low, shabby, trellis-capped walls on two sides and thus suffered from lack of privacy.

The side wall of the house enclosed the third side of the garden, and an area of uneven concrete, which the client stipulated should be kept but made more attractive, bordered the fourth.

The client has an allergy to insect bites, so stated that he did not want a water feature, which would attract insect life, included in the design. There was also an area containing a coal bunker, which the client and Earth Designs agreed should remain as a ‘working area’.

SOLUTION:

The design was styled as a contemporary cottage garden – a variation on a ‘Pottager’s Garden’, featuring herbs with the potential to incorporate vegetables within the raised flowerbeds. The beds, running along the house and boundary walls, were constructed with used railway sleepers and built at odd angles to add personality to the space.

Within these beds, a planting palette of scented orange, purple, cream and green foliage was carefully selected to give year round interest and texture. Two seating areas were included in the design, one for dining and one for contemplation, situated in separate areas to catch the sun at different times of the day.

The dining area, featuring a small table and bench seat constructed from railway sleepers, was given increased privacy with the addition of a hinged trellis closing off its exposed side. The other seating area featured a corner deck, large enough to hold two sun loungers at full spread.

The middle of the space featured a triangular raised bed in which a semi-mature tree was planted, offering shade and shelter from the elements. The main area, enclosed by the raised beds, was carpeted with a combination of slate tiles, sunken railway sleepers and pea shingle, amongst which clumps of lawn chamomile and creeping thyme were planted.

The existing garden walls were raised in height, rendered and painted white, to provide an attractive backdrop to the raised beds while significantly increasing the privacy

of the space.

The existing concreted area was overlaid with slate tiles, to provide a hard, practical, yet attractive surface. An archway constructed from railway sleepers was used to demark the existing ‘working area’ from the rest of the garden. This archway was placed so that it would also offer support for an existing honeysuckle.

TESTIMONIAL:

“It is common these days to talk of the garden as another room, an extension of the house, bringing the garden into the home, and the home into the garden etc, etc…

Earth Designs didn’t do that. They gave me a sanctuary. From a pretty vague and basic brief, (I’d like a tree, I’d like to have scented flowers, it’s a windy garden, it’s overlooked, it needs to be low maintenance….) they created a calm yet excitingly varied space in which I can escape from the world to somewhere tranquil, or entertain intimately or on a large scale.

They worked like Trojans, often putting in 12 hour days. The quality of the work, and choice of planting and hard landscaping is impeccable. Their aftercare service is terrific - if I have a query or a problem, they deal with it. They are, in short, a good bunch.

They didn’t only give me a garden, they made a dream come alive, and I thank them for it.”

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Acton, London*. Here are the details of the project

Brief: The plot for this design was a mid-size family garden, which had recently benefited from the addition of a large sunroom on the back of the property. It was a fairly blank canvas, with nothing of note to be retained in the re-design. The garden had side access and worn boundary fences which required replacing. There was no clear brief other than that the design include a seating area and some lawn, and that the transition from sunroom to garden be fairly seamless.

Solution: The focus of this design was to create an exterior space that serves as an extension to the interior, featuring several distinct and versatile areas that can be adapted to a variety of uses.

The garden's boundaries were replaced with new fencing to provide a uniform and attractive backdrop to the transformation within, while the long sideway down the right of the house was renovated with the addition of attractive 'bamboo' slate tile flooring in a random lay pattern.

The first section of the space comprises a large area of Western Red Cedar decking adjoining the house, and offers ample room for entertaining, with a long L-shaped fixed-bench seat stretching width-ways across the space from the left-hand side to the centre. This was backed with a rendered block raised bed, planted with fragrant lavender and capped with 'bamboo' slate tile, to provide a sense of enclosure and separation from the rest of the garden.

A decked walkway running down the right hand side of the space provides access to a 'spa' area, featuring a large square hot tub housed upon a reinforced paved hard-standing and nestled between existing and additional trees, shrubs and foliage to provide a secluded and intimate area for bathing throughout the seasons. Hidden behind mature and new planting in the bottom left corner, a large shed provides ample storage for the client's garden accessories. The middle of the space has been given over to a large lawn edges with slate.

A purple and yellow planting scheme of soft, cottage-style evergreen shrubs and flowering perennials will help to bring year round lightness and subtle colouring to the space.

After-dark hot tub bathing is enhanced by several strings of pea-lights woven through the existing shrubbery. Deck lights demark the main area of decking and guide one's journey along the decked walkway. Finally, spot lights in the beds highlight certain area while providing a gentle wash throughout the space.

Testimonial: "After months of planning and a full year of having builders everywhere, we had finally got the house into good shape but the garden was a nightmare. It had been somewhat overgrown before the builders moved in, but after a year of being used as a builders yard, it needed shock treatment.

We needed help fast so we searched the web. We were looking for garden designers with creative ideas for smaller London gardens. We didn't want anything too traditional but at the same time, nothing too extreme.

Earth Designs fitted the bill and after a design session with Katrina, we engaged them for the project. They had offered us a design service only, but as we only had a 4 week window in which to complete the job, we gave them the whole project.

We had built a new extension with wide glass doors that opened out into the garden, so the brief to Earth Designs was to "bring the outside, inside" and create a strong link between the new room and the garden beyond. The actual garden space was not large so we wanted to use the space as an extension of the living space - to be an "outside room".

Monday 18th April and three very charming men arrived on our doorstep at 8.0am sharp. Arlo was the project manager, ably aided and abetted by Paul and Phillip. They worked brilliantly as a team and always hit all the deadlines. In particular they did a great job in working with our neighbours to ensure the whole project ran smoothly.

The first week involved clearing the site - no mean feat with 30-year-old ivy stems that looked more like tree trunks.

The second week involved levelling the garden, putting up new fencing, building the corner seating base and planters, plus marking out the garden shape. It was good to be able to make minor changes to the design on the ground at this stage. The hot tub arrived too and was winched into place for connection later.

Week 3 saw the decking and seating built.

Then in week four the turf arrived, the lawn went down and on the last day, Katrina arrived with a truckload of wonderful specimens (and Matt) and we had a wonderful time planting. Ground Force Mk II - a complete garden from start to finish in just 4 weeks!

There were a few things that needed to be sorted out after the main work was complete. Earth Designs were great about coming back until all was complete and finished.

Our thanks to Katrina, Matt, Arlo, Paul and Phillip for a great job, completed on time and on budget with a great looking result."

A small, sunken garden of unusal sculptural quality, this modernist example of a 1950's reinterpretation of the japanese aesthetics lies adjacent to Marcel Breuer's UNESCO headquarters building in Paris.

It was created by the sculptor/architect/artist/designer Isamo Noguchi, who created the seemingly very straightforward-japanese setting on an unique, underlying sculptural form that replaces natural terrain.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Oval, London*. Here are the details of the project

The Decked Garden in Oval, London SW5

BRIEF:

The client for this design wanted a colourful space suitable for parties. Low maintenance was also a consideration. Part of the garden was shaded by a large tree and the space was overlooked by an imposing block of flats.

SOLUTION:

The design creates a chic and serviceable space, combining style with versatility to allow a variety of entertaining possibilities.

The space features a series of square and rectangular decking platforms of various sizes laid with dark maroon Massaranduba hardwood boards. Starting at ground level in the side return directly adjoining the house, each subsequent platform is raised slightly above the next, creating an exciting sense of varied levels and helping to create the illusion of a host of distinct areas to the garden.

The varied sizes and shapes of the platforms allow for a wide range of uses, with larger platforms suitable for dining, BBQ or sculptural seating, interlinked by longer, thinner decking walkways.

A strong architectural focal point to the space is provided by the walkway crossing the middle of the space. Rusted steel re-enforcing mesh is used here to create a simple yet highly effective ‘cage’ tunnel, through which a variety of climbers have been encouraged to grow.

The right hand wall is painted a deep, sensual shade of aubergine and forms the backdrop to a large decked patio that is of the main seating/dining areas. At the end of the space a small, podium-style platform steps down to a small area of artificial turf, edged with a flush level decking frame, that provide a secluded area suitable for sunbathing, relaxing, reading and alfresco naps.

Planting in the space is simple and striking, featuring a combination of Iris and Alliums for a stunning spring scheme, and graceful Stipa Gigantica, Eremus, Crocosmia and Verbena bonaries chosen to take centre stage during the summer months. The cage tunnel and purple wall play host to climbing Akebia, Clematis and Honeysuckle.

The lighting scheme combines playfulness with simplicity. Spotlights on the back of the house bathe the side return and main decked patio in light, while LED deck lights on the risers of each step help to guide the user safely through the space. The cage tunnel in the middle of the garden is adorned with fairy lights, while rope lights sited underneath the visible edges of the walkways and platforms give the walkways and platform a floating appearance when the sun goes down. The artificial lawn is framed by micro LED lights set into the surface of the decking edging.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Mill Lane, London*. Here are the details of the project

Brief: The brief from this client was to create a low maintenance, accessible and above all stylish garden, suitable for dining and entertaining. The client was looking for a real 'wow' factor and wanted the exterior of their property to mirror the high finish and individuality of their interior space. The existing space suffered from many drawbacks - it had an uninspiring, drab layout and was excessively overlooked from flats above and to the right and left. Its North facing aspect means that it does not benefit from a great deal of sunlight.

Solution: This design created create a stylish and contemporary space with a plethora of visual stimuli that offers extensive opportunity for enjoyment throughout the year.

The existing fencing along the rear and right hand boundaries was clad with opaque purple Perspex sheeting to create a uniform, modern backdrop to the space. Two distinct seating areas, each designed with a different use in mind, were created to allow the client maximum scope for entertaining and relaxation.

The first, in the top right corner of the space, forms the main focal point to the garden and comprises a slightly sunken conversation pit enclosed within a four-poster bed style structure. Constructed from sturdy railway sleepers, this area offers ample space for lounging and serves as a visually imposing talking-point. One side of the structure includes numerous open shelves, allowing the client to display a variety of sculpture and ephemera, while a second side houses a bespoke stainless steel water feature. The water feature itself is comprised of a large stainless steel tank fed from above by two stainless steel water blades. For comfort, large custom-made weatherproof cushions cover the conversation pit floor. These cushions can be removed and stored during inclement weather.

The second seating area, centre left of the space, comprises an L-shaped railway-sleeper fixed bench backed by a railway-sleeper raised bed. Serving as an informal alfresco dining area, this section of the space benefits from a low coffee-style table with a second table at kitchen-counter height, beside which the client has placed a BBQ for alfresco food preparation.

Flooring throughout is in attractive cream travertine, laid in a formal grid pattern and inlaid in the centre with a single rectangular strip of plum slate tiles, providing an elegant contrast to the dark stained railway sleeper structure and seating.

The left hand boundary was clad with stainless steel sheeting to create a stunning backdrop to the dining area. This panelling continues along the boundary beyond the seating area to mask a bespoke storage area in an alcove to the left of the space. The stainless steel theme is echoed with the addition of six stainless steel planters placed at intervals around the edge of the paving.

Planting in the space follows a strong architectural theme, consisting of sculpted box balls and tall, elegant allium in the raised bed, framed by the primeval fronds of dicksonia antartica (tree fern) clustered in the flush bed beyond. The box ball theme is echoed in the stainless steel planters spaced around the paving and a variety of climbers have been placed so that they will gradually adorn the Perspex fencing over time.

A comprehensive lighting scheme was installed with mood and accent in mind. Down-lighters installed within the alcoves of the railway sleeper shelving unit create a centre piece of the sleeper structure, while stainless steel bollard lights frame either end of the bench in the dining area. The paving is edged with in-ground up-lighters placed in front of each stainless steel planter to give balance to the space, while a submersible light installed within the water feature tank casts a gently undulating light across the back of the space. Low voltage spots cast a gentle glow across the back of the space and weatherproof wall-mounted infra-red heaters, one in the conversation pit and one on the boundary wall beside the bench seating, allow continued enjoyment of the garden on chilly nights.

Testimonial: "Many thanks, we are so thrilled with the entire garden. It is imaginative and bold but also practical and truly reflects our personalities! You have transformed an ordinary space into something quite magical."

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Hackney, London*. Here are the details of the project

The Party Garden in Hackney, London E9

BRIEF:

This space was a completely blank canvas, with sound fences to the right and a high brick wall to the left.

The client requested a ‘wow’ garden, one that is funky and stylish yet also practical and inviting, with good provision for socialising and the possibility for the inclusion of a hot tub spa.

SOLUTION:

This design sought to transform the garden from an urban wasteland into a sub-tropical party oasis and split the garden into two distinct areas. At once elegant and stylish, playful and accommodating, the space would be equally suited to intimate dining or large-scale entertaining. The colour palette is aubergine, lime and sand.

The area directly outside the back door is designed to serve as a functional utility area, with a purpose built storage unit slotted into the gap to the left of the steps and space allowed to accommodate the client’s gas barbeque.

The first section of the garden consists of two areas of slate paving, split by a decked walkway that zig-zags down the space. To the left, running partway along the existing brick wall, is fixed bench seating comprising purple rendered concrete block walls and a deck board seat. The existing wall itself was rendered behind the seat and painted purple. A moveable decking table and decking cubes on castors were constructed in this area to provide a variety of al fresco dining possibilities.

Two large rectangular stainless steel planters planted with tall bamboo split the first section of the garden from the second. The second section consists of a large, partially sunken hot tub to the right and an area of decking to the left. A large purple rendered block wall serves to square off the bottom of the garden, providing a strong backdrop of colour to the space while an opening to the left of this wall allows access to a small, open-air storage area behind.

Planting is strong and simple. Big specimen architectural plants dominate, including plum leafed spiky phormiums and cordylines. Grasses give motion to the space. Dramatic ‘Black Parrot’ tulips and ‘Black Irises’ contrast with arum lilies to bring elegance and grace to the scheme. Agapanthus will take the stage once the spring flowers have died back and offset the sand grasses and strong plum foliage.

To compete the design, a variety of lighting was included to create a visual cornucopia when the sun goes down. The decking features sunken lights, strategically placed to light key areas. Spot lights in the main beds illuminate the architectural planting to its best advantage, while creating an overall wash to the garden. Finally, six stainless steel downlighters, three on the end wall and three on the side wall, provide effective illumination to the seating area and hot tub.

TESTIMONIAL:

"From the first time we met Kat we knew we had made the right choice. Kat very quickly determined what we wanted and more importantly, what we didn't. After a couple of iterations of design we came to an agreement and very quickly work started. We made it clear from the beginning that we needed Earth Designs to take care of every detail.

Neither of us had the time or the inclination to be involved in the process, other than discussions around design as the project progressed. Due to access restrictions, delivery of all materials and plants required the use of a crane and closure of the road. This included co-coordinating the delivery and installation of the hot tub with the manufacturer. The boys handled everything without issue.

During the construction, the whole team worked very hard in all weathers to get the job done. We gave them a key so we did not have to be around at any point and they could come and go as they pleased. Every day, we hardly knew they were there and each night, they cleaned up before they left.

They were completely trustworthy and always polite and considerate while in our home. The end result is fantastic and meets all our needs. We have a wonderful environment in which to entertain, one to relax in and a spa area to die for."

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Stoke Newington, London here are the details of the project.

The Urban Courtyard Garden in Stoke Newington, London N5

BRIEF:

The clients had already made great strides to clear the garden in this ground floor flat, and in the process had actually lowered the level of the garden and removed several tons of soil. The main area of the space is bordered on two sides by a Victorian brick wall, sturdy and sound yet weathered and full of character, with a sideway running down one side of an extension on the original Victorian house.

At first, the clients had no specific requirements for the space, other than it be low maintenance and contain some large, leafy, architectural plants. However, they were keen to have quite a hands-on approach to the design and build process, and the original design was modified by them in consultation with Earth Designs several times both before and during construction.

SOLUTION:

With this design the aim was to create a simple and elegant space, suitable for both formal and informal dining and entertaining. The main area of the garden was framed on three sides by waist high raised beds with white rendered retaining walls, with a lower raised bed, also with white rendered walls, running three quarters of the length of the sideway.

A section of the rendered walls of this lower bed formed the supports for a bench seat, left hollow inside with a hinged decking lid for waterproof garden storage. A bespoke wooden pergola, upon which evergreen Clematis Armandii and 'Vitis Brant' vine was trained, was constructed over the low bed and bench seat to provide a sense of seclusion and demarcation between this area and the garden proper.

Throughout the garden the floor was laid with natural grey slate tile in a diamond pattern, edged with a straight run of slate tiles specially selected for their amber and copper hues.

Bold architectural planting complemented the simple design perfectly, concentrating mainly on big leafy greens and soft ferns with a selection of textures and shades of green. Several evergreen shrubs were chosen to hold interest during the winter months, while grasses and hostas will steal the show throughout the summer.

Lighting in this space is designed to ensure that this is a truly nocturnal garden. 12 white eyelids inserted into the main raised beds will flood the paving below in an elegant and aesthetically pleasing manner. Low-voltage spotlights in the raised beds

are carefully placed to illuminate the foliage to its best advantage while creating a gentle ambient glow across the beds. Finally, up/down lighters positioned on the crossbeams of the pergola provide light to the sideway and create a dramatic

and intriguing entrance into the garden.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Walderslade, Kent*. Here are the details of the project

The Terraced Garden in Walderslade, Kent ME5 9LQ

The various existing levels in this large garden will be terraced to create a more usable space, with several distinct areas providing a variety of alfresco dining and entertaining opportunities. The existing middle terrace area will be extended towards the house and enclosed around three sides by raised bed retaining walls (rendered and painted a colour of the client’s choice) that will form part of the terracing for the upper garden. A set of deep steps will be constructed on the right hand side to connect the lower garden to the middle terrace. Flooring in both areas, including the steps, will be laid with attractive black slate tiles. The left hand side of the middle terrace will benefit from a dining area featuring a suite of bespoke garden furniture constructed from sturdy new railway sleepers. This furniture will comprise an L-shaped fixed bench seat, a 1 metre square dining table and an L-shaped ‘suspended’ bench seat attached to the side of the raised bed retaining walls. A simple pergola-style open timber structure will enclose the dining area, over which an all-weather shade sail will be installed to make the dining experience more comfortable on hot summer days. Flooring in the dining area will be laid with stylish white chipped travertine to provide a pleasing contrast to the black slate in the rest of the space. The focal point of the right hand side of the middle terrace will be a stainless steel water feature installed on the raised bed wall directly opposite the top of the stairs to the lower area. This feature will consist of a long (1m)stainless steel water blade mounted halfway up the raised bed wall, from which water will cascade into a pool dressed with decorative aggregate installed in the paving below. A second set of steps will lead to the upper garden, which will be enclosed by raised beds on the right hand side and a raised, level artificial lawn on the left. The upper garden will be paved throughout with black slate tiles to match the paving in the middle and lower garden, with the exception of a square patio laid with white chipped travertine on the right hand side. This patio will benefit from a timber pergola and shade sail to match that in the middle terrace. Planting in the garden will follow a predominantly yellow and orange colour palette and will include large, green leaves tropical plants and exotic flowering perennials. A section of the bed to the right hand side of the upper garden will be lined with waterproof membrane to allow the planting of water loving bog plants, such as lilies and giant rhubarb (gunnera).

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Paddington, London*. Here are the details of the project

Brief: This wide, shallow garden had few features other than a large tree overshadowing the space and was overlooked by a block of flats to the left. The client wanted to create a stylish and unusual family space with a focus on combining British and New Zealand plants.

Solution: In this design we sought to create a quirky yet stylish family space suitable for a variety of uses. The area directly adjoining the house was paved with Indian sandstone in a random lay pattern featuring a large paved circle slightly to the right of the main double patio doors. Metre wide curved paths lead around either side of an oval shaped lawn in the centre of the space. The left hand path leads to a second, smaller, paved circle in the left hand corner of the space, while the right path terminate in a small area of paving directly adjoining the existing shed in the to right corner of the space. All paving and lawn is edged with attractive granite sett bricks.

The paved circle outside the back door features a semi-circular fixed bench approximately 3m long, constructed from rendered blocks and capped with and Indian sandstone seat. The bench is backed by a tall rendered block raised bed, which acts as a backrest to the bench seat. Circular rendered planters planted with a large box ball frame the bench at either end, to give this seating area a sense of seclusion.

Large swirling and scrolling white rendered block walls provide an arresting focal point to the garden. Running down each side of the space, these walls undulate and taper in height, reaching a maximum of 1.8m in parts then dipping to almost ground level while curving around the space. At their highest points, the walls act as a frame to the circular paving to the left, and as a screen to the shed in the right hand corner.

The planting scheme incorporates native English And New Zealand plants in hot and spicy colours.

Finally, a simple lighting scheme gives gentle illumination to the garden. Flush stainless steel ground lights set into the riser of the arced fixed bench provide a wash of gentle light to the paved circle. Low voltage lighting placed throughout the beds highlight individual plant specimens while providing ambient background illumination. To complete the scheme, a series of in-ground walk-over lights installed in the curved pathways guide the user up either side of the space.

Testimonial: "We were delighted by the design which we felt fully answered our brief to provide both an outside play area for our children together with a stylish entertaining space for the grownups to enjoy and relax in.

The design was innovative and striking but still very practical and functional. We have had excellent reactions from all our family and friends.

The Earth Designs team who built the garden worked particularly hard throughout a very bad winter. We are very pleased with their skilled workmanship, especially with regards to their excellent laying of the paving.

It has been a pleasure working with such a reliable and conscientious team and we would like to wish them every success in the future."
