Winter has arrived, returning Minnesota to a frozen tundra-like place for the next 5 months (or hopefully less).
Still, the trains keep rolling. Winter is nothing new, of course. And the veteran locomotives have been though as many, if not more winters than I have.
On a warm December afternoon, three veteran EMD widecabs head west on the point of H-NTWGFD1-05A, passing under the signal gantry at Big Lake station.

All in matching corporate paint, often referred to, unofficially, as "H4", as it differs from H3 (black v silver underframe, 2 v 6 yellow stripes) and similar to H1 (modern logo).

I learn from Roy Strom's website that much of the company's early success depended on their relationship with the Milwaukee Road railroad and that this logo is derived from the logo for the Milwaukee Road's Hiawatha Line.

The much talked about ex-GECX now Navajo Transitional Energy Co. T4's looked great in their Santa Fe inspired paint. The Navajo culture had a big influence on the Santa Fe in the west and it was like a blast from the past to see the swoop behind the cab, yet with a fresh twist in the modern logo and graphics applied. The biggest question seems to be why these are going to Barstow when the mine they will serve is in northwest New Mexico and will have to be trucked there from Gallup.

The modern logo of God's Wonderful Railway. Greater Western is a railway franchise for the provision of passenger services from London Paddington to the Cotswolds, West of England, South West England and South Wales. The current holder is Great Western Railway.
The Great Western Railway (GWR) was a British railway company that linked London with the south-west and west of England, the West Midlands, and most of Wales. It was founded in 1833, received its enabling Act of Parliament on 31 August 1835 and ran its first trains in 1838. It was engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who chose a broad gauge of 7 ft (2,134 mm)—later slightly widened to 7 ft 1⁄4 in (2,140 mm)—but, from 1854, a series of amalgamations saw it also operate 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in (1,435 mm) standard-gauge trains; the last broad-gauge services were operated in 1892. The GWR was the only company to keep its identity through the Railways Act 1921, which amalgamated it with the remaining independent railways within its territory, and it was finally merged at the end of 1947 when it was nationalised and became the Western Region of British Railways.
The GWR was called by some "God's Wonderful Railway" and by others the "Great Way Round" but it was famed as the "Holiday Line", taking many people to English and Bristol Channel resorts in the West Country as well as the far south-west of England such as Torquay in Devon, Minehead in Somerset, and Newquay and St Ives in Cornwall. The company's locomotives, many of which were built in the company's workshops at Swindon, were painted a Brunswick green colour while, for most of its existence, it used a two-tone "chocolate and cream" livery for its passenger coaches. Goods wagons were painted red but this was later changed to mid-grey.
Great Western trains included long-distance express services such as the Flying Dutchman, the Cornish Riviera Express and the Cheltenham Spa Express. It also operated many suburban and rural services, some operated by steam railmotors or autotrains. The company pioneered the use of larger, more economic goods wagons than were usual in Britain. It operated a network of road motor (bus) routes, was a part of the Railway Air Services, and owned ships, docks and hotels.
ID&T Headquarters, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
ID&T is a Dutch entertainment and medium enterprise that was founded in the early 1990s and organizes the largest dance events in the world.
ID&T stands for the initials of three founders of the company, Irfan, Duncan and Theo, all residents of Amsterdam. All three were experienced in the art of organizing house, techno and trance parties when they created ID&T, and their goal is to organize the largest events in the Netherlands and the European electronic dance music scene. Their first big event was "The Final Exam" in the Utrecht Conference Center, with more than 10,000 people in attendance.
Today, ID&T is the largest dance organizer in The Netherlands. Events organised by the company include Sensation in the Amsterdam Arena, with around 40,000 people. Other parties include Mysteryland on the Floriade 2002 terrain near Hoofddorp, with around 50,000 people, Innercity in the Amsterdam RAI Congress Center (45,000 people), Thunderdome (hardcore techno and techno), Trance Energy, Bloomingdale and NJOY. They were the first to organize a single DJ event, starring DJ Tiësto in the Gelredome stadium, Arnhem on 11 May 2003.

Here is the story of the Grangemouth bricks as I understand it. Please let me know if you have any additions or corrections.
Logo: Modern logo.
Material: ABS
Inner ribs: None.
Runner / center line inside top surface : Yes
Mold pip: Short side.
Intellectual property protection: Pat. pend
Mold numbers: F 1 to F 4.
Remarkable features: Produced in regular colors (material test specimens) and multicoloured marbled mixes of regular colors (engineers having fun).
Colors known:
Official LEGO colors: White, Bright Red, Bright Yellow, Bright Blue, Black and Light Gray.
Non-LEGO colors (at that time): Orange, Dark Blue, Green and probably more.
The marbled bricks usually have a mix of 2 or 3 colours, with other colours created in the mix.
HISTORY
In the 1960's, LEGO was not large enough to produce and control worldwide supply of LEGO brick from their own factory. Because of that, and because of import restrictions in several countries, LEGO was produced in a few different countries.
In the UK the licence was held by the Courtauld's Corp from 1960 to 1992. They produced LEGO in their Wrexham factory and distributed it to Britain, Ireland and Australia. Actual production seems to have stopped around 1978-'79.
We did not know anything about where Courtaulds/Wrexham got their raw materials or how they organised quality control, but in July/August 2014 we learned that the material was supplied by Borg Warner Chemicals in Grangemouth. We also learned that they had their own mold (F1-F4) for quality testing in their "color lab" before the raw ABS was send to LEGO (presumably to the Wrexham factory).
Moulds used by Borg-Warner in Grangemouth
In the past 10 years, we have found several odd-colored bricks in the region around Grangemouth. Several lots have been found with bricks made in two moulds, helping to link the origin of both to the Borg-Warner factory in Grangemouth.
It now looks like the Borg-Warner color lab started with a 20-brick D mold. Like the BASF and Bayer molds, this mold was also first used for regular production before being used in the color lab.
Later they used a 20-brick Y-mould.
Next that mold was replaced by a 4-brick mold that seems to have been assembled from parts of other production molds. The cavities are numbered with a scratched (hand-engraved)
8, scratched 9, engraved O 10 and engraved O 11.
Finally that mold was replaced by a new 4-brick mold with numbers F1 to F4. The bricks in the photo shown here were made in that F1-F4 mold.
Most of the bricks found belong to the F-mould. The history as it is known now explains why that is so.
The story of the marbled bricks, as it was told in 2014
In 1977/78 some employees at Borg-Warner wanted to experiment with some of the excess plastic from the regular LEGO production and used the mold to produce bricks with a "granite effect". The bricks they produced were given to children. They did not see this as a problem, because the marbled "granite" bricks could be clearly distinguished from real LEGO products. This might have been done with permission within the factory, or they might have been produced during night shifts. As the story was told on BrickLink, the bricks were eventually spotted by a LEGO representative and the mold was taken away.
Updated story, after interviewing former Borg-Warner Grangemouth testing lab employees, 2024
Other UK bricks...
In addition to the molds named above, a few more odd-colored brickss have been found in the UK.
- M on the short side (similar to the D bricks, nicknamed Maxx-bricks), probably from the mid 1960s.
- N and P bricks, usually found in milky colours, probably from the early- to mid-1970s.
We do not know yet in which factory there bricks were made. They are currently referred to as "Wrexham", but they were found and named before we knew the history of the Borg-Warner color lab and the Grangemouth bricks.

These bricks are probably Minitalia test bricks made by LEGO in Denmark. These bricks have the Minitalia version of the split tubes, but unlike Minitalis they have hollow studs. The Minitalia bricks had a recessed stud (like technic bricks or modern minifigure heads) and no hole on the inside.
Logo: Modern logo
Material: same as Minitalia?
Wall type: Thin with vertical ridges, without cross-support
Inner ribs: none
Inner tubes: with split tubes (parallel to short side). The split is narrow on bricks G, H, J and wide on the other bricks.
Flowrib / center line inside top surface : No
Mold pip: on the stud with the letter.
Mold position numbers:
on top
Letters F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N on one stud, normal LEGO logo on the other studs.
inside brick
• F, H, K, L, M, N below left tube
• R (on G brick) and S (on J brick) above left tube
• The different ranges of letters suggest that this mold might have reused parts of an older mold.
Intellectual property protection: Pat. pend. on bricks R and S, not on the others.
Colors known: Red, white.
(Minitalia was made in red, white, yellow, blue, black, transparent, green and light grey. I wonder if we will find those...)
Remarkable features:
• Letters on the studs.
• Minitalia version of the split tubes
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS
• Are these really Minitalia test bricks?
• Like so many of the odd bricks... why were these made?

Found on my birthday, let’s hope there is something in there……
Update:
YES, about 200 Dutch bricks, some colors I did not yet have, 8xc 06, tiny Pat.pend and 2xABCD bricks in there.
Have not seen any modern logo yet, but will have a good look tomorrow.
Updated update:
Looks like the old and new logo did not come in the same batches, but the 2xABCD bricks did come in both…..
Great birthday gift!

Case in point with the new shopping center signage: J. Jill took the opportunity to upgrade to their new, ultra modern logo (again, like it or not!). As of May 20, they still had this temporary banner up however. J. Jill was profiled with a photo back on (appropriately enough) April Fool's 2017! Truth be told, I find both the old and new logos a little bit hard to read :P

Finally, test bricks have been found in the USA. So far, only one lot has been found, consisting of around 700 very, very dirty bricks containing many moulding errors.
The seller wrote: I aquired these bricks when I was around 5-6 years old (1969-70) from an uncle who worked in an associated manufacturer in New England at the time. I can barely remember him mentioning something about the bricks being experimental at the time..
Logo: Modern logo. The middle bar of the E and G are above the center.
Material: Unusual plastics
Wall type: Thick
Inner ribs: None
Inner tubes: With rounded bottom
Flowrib / center line inside top surface : Yes.
Mold pip: On the short side, above the center
Mold identification letter: Hand engraved B
Mold position numbers: Hand engraved numbers,
1 to 8 and 11 to 18 have been found. It looks like the person who hand-engraved these mould numbers started a first row of mould cavities with number 1, and the second row at 11.
The mould numbers are very difficult to read on the light green and grey bricks.
Numbers 12, 13, 15, 16, 17 and 18 show a corresponding mould number below the flowrib. A few others show similar signs of reuse, but without readable mould cavity numbers.
Intellectual property protection: Pat pend above and below center tube.
On several positions the "pend" part is faint or sometimes even absent. On the number 11 position, the letters are spaced wider apart and the text has rotated 180 degrees.
Colors known:
• Red, White, Light Gray, Light Tan, Light Green/mint, Dark Blue
Remarkable features:
• Lots and lots of moulding errors on these bricks. It seems likely that the moulding conditions (like temperature and speed) were not suitable for the materials used.
• this was the first large lot of test bricks found in the USA! Several more must be out there, waiting to be found... Before this lot, only a few odd bricks wrom different moulds had been found in the USA.
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS
• Where were these made? At which company at which location in ''New England''? Possibilities include Borg-Warner (we know a plant in Woodmar supplied LEGO) or one of the Samsonite production locations.
This Citibank branch, in Freeport, NY on Long Island, was built in the late 50's and the vintage logo of The City Bank of New York was designed onto the building's cement facade. This older logo uses Citibank's longtime compass, which was still used (though updated) when the bank's name changed to Citibank in 1976. The compass logo was abandoned and the modern logo was created in 1998 when Citigroup merged with Traveler's. The new company adopted the red Traveler's umbrella, which became the stylized red arc connecting the i's today.
Citibank was founded in 1812 as The City Bank of New York. The bank merged with First National Bank in 1955, the became known as The First National City Bank of New York in 1962. The bank was rebranded Citibank in 1976.

Yesterday, Stuart asked me about a brick he had found. I had never seen them before, but looking through my unsorted UK bricks I managed to find a few. So now both of us found these bricks in the UK. Did anyone ever find them somewhere else? Or were they made in the UK?
Logo: Modern logo
Material:: ABS
Inner ribs: None.
Inner tubes: Rounded.
Flowrib / center line inside top surface : Yes.
Below the flowrib there is an older mold number. On the few bricks I have this number always matches the number inside the tube.
Mold pip: On the short side.
Mold number: H. In the right tube, on the side of the pip.
Mold position numbers: 11, 12, 13, 14, , 15, 17, 18 and 20 found
Intellectual property protection: Pat. pend
(Upside down when reading the mold numbers)
Design ID (3001): No.
Remarkable features:
• Letter and number inside tubes
Colors known: White, Red, Blue, Yellow, Black
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS
• Are these bricks only found in the UK?
Logo: Modern logo on the studs.
Material: ABS
Inner ribs: none
Inner tubes: With cross supports
Inner walls: Thin with vertical ridges
Flowrib / center line inside top surface : No.
Mold pip: on the stud.
This photo of a brick with pearl-effect shows a circle around the stud. There is no height difference, this effect seems to be caused by the flow of the material with pearlescent-addition during moulding.
Mold numbers: None. The brick has the letters "CoC" inside.
Our best guess is that CoC stands for Certificate of Conformity.
In order to be legally allowed to sell products, the product has to meet the applicable safety standards. When all standards are met, and the manufacturer can provide proof that they are, the manufacturer can issue a Certificate of Conformity. For this process, tests can be required. It seems like these bricks were made to be used in such tests.
The following parts with TEST on top and CoC inside are
known:
• brick 2x4
• brick 1x2
• plate 2x4.
It seems likely that all are made in one mold.
www.lego.com/en-gb/legal/notices-and-policies/compliance/
Intellectual property protection: (C) LEGO
Remarkable features:
• TEST on top of the brick.
• CoC inside the brick.
Colors known:
Milky white, pearl colours, glitter colours.
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS
• What were these bricks made for exactly?
• Were these bricks specifically used to demonstrate conformance to safety standards of bricks with the additions causing the pearlescent and glitter effects?
The old RDC looks like it is ready to haul commuters to Boston. Looks can be deceiving. The track is only for display and ends a few feet behind the photographer. Bedford is 10.65 miles from West Cambridge where the BM Lexington Branch used to connect to the Fitchburg Division Main Line. The former Lexington Branch is now the Minuteman Bikeway. It is probably the most popular bike and hiking trail created from a Boston and Maine abandoned line. The building in the background that looks like it was the station is in fact the former freight house although it began life as a 19th century narrow gauge engine house. The line to Boston was always standard gauge but the connecting line from Bedford to Billerica started out as a narrow gauge line. The RDC displays the old Boston and Maine "Minuteman" logo. The logo is particularly appropriate for this route, from one of the crossings in Lexington, you can see Lexington Battle Green where the first battle of the American Revolution was fought with Lexington Minutemen fighting British Redcoats. The original statue of the Minuteman which inspired the BM herald stands on the Battle Green. In the late 1950's the BM replaced the Minuteman herald with a blue "BM" logo so the Minuteman herald only adorned the RDC's for few years. The preservation group "Friends of Bedford Depot" put the more modern logo on the other end of the RDC. This is an RDC-2, the baggage door is on the other end.
Logo: Modern logo inside a circle
Material: CA (less common?) and ABS (more common?)
Inner ribs: none
Inner tubes: with rounded bottom.
Flowrib / center line inside top surface: No.
Mold pip: just above the center on the short side,.
Mold number: Z
Mold position numbers: 1 to 20, one brick is not numbered ("void", probably 6, 7 or 13). Number 10 has an additional 1 below the 0.
Intellectual property protection: Pat pend, above and below right tube.
Design ID (3001): No.
Remarkable features:
• mold pip side without flowrib
• unusual placement of the pat pend.
Colors known: White, Red, Yellow.
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS
• On which position did the "void" brick belong?
Logo: Modern logo.
Material: ABS (solid), PP (transparent)
Inner ribs: On the long and short sides. Visible as a frosted line in transparent bricks.
Inner tubes: with flat bottom
Flowrib / center line inside top surface : Yes.
Mold pip: on the short side.
Mold numbers: 343 to 350.
The numbers 343, 344 and 345 are in the smaller font version.
Intellectual property protection: None.
Design ID (3001): None
Colors known: Regular production bricks made in this mold are known to exist in Transparent (trans-clear) only.
Other colors have been found in lots that also contain known Bayer bricks. Colors found include Transparent Red and several non-production colors.

This is actually my own creation but this would have made a great looking banner displayed at gas stations and truck stops, or billboard or bumper sticker in the late 1960s-early 1970s. "The Finest" was actually a slogan Union Oil of California used in the 1950s and early '60s, but it fits in nicely with the more modern logos.
Most 2x4 bricks without cross-support (3001old) with a pip on the stud are of the 3001oldf1 type. This brick is an exception. It does not have internal ribs/frosted lines on the inner walls.
Logo: Modern logo.
Material: Polycarbonate?
(Replacement for ABS in transparent bricks because raw ABS is milky white)
Inner ribs: None.
Inner tubes: with flat bottom.
Flowrib / center line inside top surface : No.
Mold pip: on the stud.
Mold number: 55
Mold position numbers: 1 to 8.
Number 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 also have number 01 inside. I do not know what that is for, maybe left/right or top/bottom? If 3 also has the 01 and 6 does not there would be some kind of symmetry. It could also mean that there are two molds, or that there was a mold revision, or something else.
Intellectual property protection:None.
Design ID (3001): No.
Remarkable features:
• transparent 3001old that is NOT 3001oldf1, it might be the only one with the pip on the stud.
Colors known:
regular: Transparent
other: Maersk Blue, Dark Grey, Trans-Neon Green

These bricks are nearly impossible to photograph. They are so shiny that either they reflect so much that all details are blown out or none of the details are visible. This might be the most difficult bricks to photograph yet :-D
---
These bricks were made in license by Samsonite. This mold had a few life phases. Several details such as the font for the mold numbers used, the absence of the pat pend mark and the mold pip location are very recognisable and indicate that these bricks were made in the same mold.
• I found a few bricks with a weak Open O logo.
• The next version that we can identify have two Open O logo's at a 90 degree angle. The mold pip locations and logo orientations change, so the mold halves changed position at least once during maintenance/revision.
• Finally the bricks received a new modern stud logo.
In the top left, three versions of the number 20 brick. Top right three versions of the brick without number. Below that a few bricks with each logo version.
The amount of visible changes is higher than usual, and those crossed logos do not live up to the high quality standard we expect to see in LEGO bricks.
Logo: Open O logo, Crossed Open O logo, Modern logo
Material: CA
Wall type: Thick
Inner ribs: none
Inner tubes: with rounded bottom
Flowrib / center line inside top surface : No
Mold pip: short side, top corner
Mold position numbers: 1 to 24
There is one brick without number. That must be position 11 or 19.
Intellectual property protection: None.
There is no Pat. pend. mark, which is unlike other bricks made in this period.
Colors known:
• Open O logo: red
• Crossed logo: red, white, yellow

Logo: Modern logo
Material: ABS
Inner ribs: like 3001oldf1
Inner tubes: with flat bottom.
Flowrib / center line inside top surface: No.
Mold pip: on the stud.
Mold number: 2 below the right tube, a two digit number above that tube. The first digit ranges from 0 to 9, the second digit from 0 to 3.
The molds probably contained a set of 8 numbers, similar to the other molds from this time period.
Should we read the numbers in reverse order? Is number 51/2 actually number 215? It makes more sense than the alternatives I can think of, but it does lead to an overlap in numbers between molds... Still thinking about this one.
Mold position numbers:
There are two versions. First there were no markings inside the stud holes. it seems like the numbers 1 to 8 were added to some of them later.
Intellectual property protection: None.
Design ID (3001): No.
Remarkable features:
• Four of these bricks were retooled later and included in a mold with scratched mold numbers inside the tubes.
Colors known: Red, Yellow, White, Blue, Black.
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS
• How should we read these mold numbers?
• Where does this fit in the numbering system? Most 3001old with a mold pip on the stud have the mold number inside the tubes.
Instead of growing up with Walmart (or even "Wal-Mart"), I lived near a shopping center with an A&P, Rexall, and TG&Y, which was by far my faovrite of those three stores. The chain started in 1935, had over 900 stores at one time, and one of it's three founders continued to oversee operatrions up until 1970. McCroy's purchased the chain in the mid-80's, and started slashing jobs and closing stores shortly threafter. How well did that work out for McCroy's? In 2001, they filed for bankruptcy and are only a memory today. (Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TG%26Y). The store in Southaven looked very similar to this one in New Mexico, complete with the same "5¢ to $1.00" signage in the 70's: flic.kr/p/6HaD67, and flic.kr/p/6H6AcK. Lastly, here's a 1984 TG&Y commercial, with more modern logo by then, and two years before they were acquired and gutted: youtu.be/EfRhVREfJyc.
Quickly put together (because I will probably update this soon), but I hope it is clear. Might have to zoom in :)
I'm very interested in anything I don't have here (and, if possible, I'd like everything to be in red...)
Everything here has thin walls, cross supports, and modern logos. Pip placement is usually on a stud, with the exceptions of 219 (top center) and 777 (short side). There is a 3001 WITHOUT cross supports but I don't have one yet!
Nearly all (if not ALL) of these molds here were used for production in sets.

These are the test bricks that are currently known with an origin in the United Kingdom.
