A glimpse of my S scale urban model railroad. Shot with the Olympus E-M1 using the Olympus M.75mm F1.8 prime lens with aperture fully open. Lighting is from natural morning sunlight through a window.

Took the camera to shallow DOF here for this shot of the engine and train.

A 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive crosses a river on my S gauge model railroad. I scratch built the trestle from strip wood and created the river using paint and an epoxy resin.

Note the activity by the river bank where two travelers have set up a campfire. It's actually a small LCD bulb that is powered from a transistor radio. Instead of HEARING the music you SEE a flickering "campfire."

Happy Miniature Fence Friday ...

Quiet morning on Schaffan Street, in the fictional town of Flagstone, New Jersey. Structures at left at Atlas Model Railroad Co., house at right is Woodland Scenics. HO scale models photographed outdoors on modules I built and scenicked.

Young people (ie. kids) still enjoy watching trains.

A morning Harlem Line commuter train passes a Conrail local freight waiting in the siding during the summer of 1982. Once the commuter train is in the clear, the Conrail local crew will drop off a loaded boxcar at King Lumber. HO models photographed outdoors on modules I built and scenicked.

UP 9726 blasts through town.

Just completed CGW 106A and CGW 116F. These are detailed and painted Highliner bodies on Athearn Genesis drives. Now I only need three more to complete the set I have planned for trains 192/143 coming in at Dubuque Junction.

Trying a B&W iphone filter on a car model. Ended up looking well.

in 1963, the CB&Q Havelock Shop built 300 XM4 boxcars, 47500-47799. The last 10 were built with Transco side sheathing.

I had often wondered how to go about building one of these unique cars until Kurt Kruse, as a great modeling gift (or perhaps as a mean trick) had sides 3D printed for this car.

It was still something of a challenge to build. In addition to the resin sides, it uses Branchline ends and roof, Accurail underframe, Plano roofwalk and brake platform, some DA freight car detail parts and a bunch of bits fabricated from styrene. Painted with Model Master insignia red and my galvanized mix. Decals came from a bunch of sets including Microscale and some Modeler's Choice leftovers.

In the early 1950's my dad got me hooked on trains, at first model, and then the real thing. We would often visit The New York Society Of Model Engineers when they had their open house for public viewing of both their HO and O Guage model railroads. At this time they were located on Hoboken Road in Carlstadt NJ. Pictured is a part of their HO layout with a Hump Yard that was controlled by compressed air which simulated real life retarders. That's my dad on the left looking on. Sadly he passed away at the age of 59 from a totally unexpected heart attack. I miss the times sharing both life and the hobby with him. Most of my railfanning in February has been confined to photographing the Santa Fe in my attic. Here a westbound intermodal behind a pair of GP60s and a GP60M B unit enter the yard at Belen, NM.

I was admiring this model railroad display at a local bank when a delightful older woman joined me. We shared our nostalgic love of trains, both real and in small form. We had both thrilled to the old steam locomotives and spent hours playing with Lionel, American Flyer, and other toy trains of an earlier time.

These have been on our coffee table for at least a week. They are wheels (trucks) for Hadley's garden railroad trains. The question remains though why they are in our living room.....

In 1969/70, the Illinois Central found itself power short. The temporary solution was to lease old F-units from D&RGW, B&LE, and former MKT units from Precision Engineering (PECO).
