Exercise 2: Courtyard Building
Created: Fall 2005
Site: A fictional 90' x 75' flat rectangle in the historic center of a city. South of the lot is a 24' high brick party wall of an adjacent building, while north of the lot is a small city park. The west lot line is the termination of an important boulevard, while the east faces a quiet neighborhood street.
Description: To design a year round market building, as a courtyard building type, with 220 - 3200 square feet of enclosed market stall area. The limited tectonics supplied are (40) precast wall panels 8' x 20' x 1'-6" as well as (23) 4' x 24' x 1'-6" and an unlimited amount of 6" x 12" steel tubes.
Solution: The design utilizes a central courtyard allowing access to all interior market stalls. Additional space was created for exterior market stalls. Traffic flow is designed for access to the west boulevard and northern city park. The model was built out of cardboard, white foam core, and strips of basswood.
