25NC 4-8-4 3513 roars through the bridge over the Modder River between Likhatlong and Sannaspos with the 13:20 Ladybrand to Bloemfontein train. 06/06/1980 [SAR 525].
The recently formed Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, ordered 88 of these Afro 4000 diesel locomotives from Vossloh in Valencia, Spain. So far 13 locomotives have been delivered. It is a highly controversial order, with claims that the locomotives are unsuitable for the South African loading gauge, being too high, which may result in the fouling of overhead wires. There are also claims of corruption, which have resulted in calls for the order to be stopped and the delivered locomotives sent back.
On the 19th August 2015, one locomotive was derailed at Modder River, whilst working an overnight service from Johannesburg to Cape Town. The locomotive, no. 010, which was extensively damaged in the incident, is seen still parked in Modder River station.
