May 13, 2010 - Mayor Cory A. Booker, Municipal Court Acting Chief Judge Richard E.A. Nunes, Corporation Counsel Julien X. Neals and other dignitaries greeted eight Ivy Hill Middle School students as they conducted a mock trial in the Newark Municipal Court. The mock trial was developed in partnership with the Newark-based Law Firm of McCarter & English and Citizen Schools, a national non-profit provider of out-of-school learning programs for middle-school students. The civil case scenario played out involved a patron suing the owners of a restaurant for damages and the costs of hospitalization after being infected with E. coli. Acting Chief Judge Nunes presided over the case, while members of the law firm served as jurors. “Mock trials are so important to training our future lawyers and leaders,” the Mayor said. “It’s a privilege to be able to come here and greet you and all the partners who organized this event.” Photo credits: Press Information Office, City of Newark, NJ

Students participating in a new program designed to expose Birmingham-area students to the legal profession gained knowledge of how the criminal justice system works on January 26, 2017, at the Central Library. On February 2 they will discuss Case Analysis and Brainstorming.
The program is designed to introduce 30 students from grades six through 12 to the critical thinking, technology, and advocacy skills utilized in trial practice. After learning and developing these skills, the program will culminate in a mock trial conducted in a courtroom on March 9. During the trial, program participants will assume the roles of lawyers, witnesses, and judge.
