A star tails shot through Mobius Arch in the Alabama Hills of Lone Pine, CA. The trails were processed in Photoshop by stacking 52 layers and adjusting the opacity of each layer from 2% to 100% to create that streaky look. I only shot these for about 30 minutes and had to leave. Next time I'll try and shoot for an hour or more.

The alarm went off. Still half awake, I hastily grabbed my camera gear and strolled the trail back to Mobius Arch. The sky was clear without a single spec of cloud lingering, particularly, above the peaks. Perfect, I thought to myself. Still early till the sunrise, I took my time setting up the cameras. The anticipation grew high, but the clear view of Mt. Whitney calmed me. Once everything was set, I just sat back and waited. Just patiently waiting for the glow to descend across the peaks. The sky started to lighten. Then the peaks started glowing red as if embers were slowly coming back to life. It was simply magical.

I finally made a visit to the Mobius Arch in the Alabama Hills, near Lone Pine, California. I can't believe it took me so long to check it out.

The Mobius Arch in the Alabama Hills at sunrise. I sat below the arch on this stormy morning getting pelted with rain and wind praying that the clouds in the east would break up to allow some light onto the sierra and the storm clouds. Luckily enough, right at sunrise, light peered through the clouds and illuminated the scene. Too bad Mt. Whitney was shrouded in clouds, but it still made for a beautiful photo none the less.

The sun was so harsh out here that i actually climbed down the rocks on this side of the arch just to find some shade for a minute. I'm glad i did because i would not have thought otherwise to take a shot from this angle - with the arch blocking the direct sun there were much more colors in the rocks to be seen. An exposure challenge given the contrast, but got this in one exposure, this is not a blend or an HDR.

I just returned from a wonderful week in the Alabama Hills. Our Mountain High Workshop was a lot of fun with a great group of enthusiastic participants wondering around the interesting geography near Lone Pine, California. In this image Lone Pine Peak is seen through the well known Mobius Arch.

This place is becoming one of the most photographed places in the Eastern Sierra's. 350+ Hollywood movies were filmed nearby. This shot was taken about 15 minutes after the really good light, when twenty photographers were crowded together on the same rock trying to get the same shot at the same time.

To photograph sunbursts, stop down the aperture to f22, and let just a point of sunlight into the frame. For more examples of this technique, see my sunburst tag.

Mobius Sky Lanterns

~~~~~
How inspiring is it to see the Milky Way, a comet, and the famous Mobius Arch during a beautiful Mojave evening? It's moments like this that can lift your spirits, even when things are stressful or you are in pain. This is Comet C/2023 A3 as seen on 22 October 2024 from Alabama Hills in Owens Valley, CA, near the Sierra Nevadas. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the scene. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting." Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images.
"A twist in the fabric of space where time becomes a loop"
This is the Mobius Tattoo. A scientific calculation that can be used in Astrophysics to describe a closed system if gravity is strong enough to bend spacetime into a loop. Basically meaning that if you travel far enough, you will end up where you began without really knowing it.
This is my first Tattoo and it turned out great. This is on the inside of my Right Bicep. I will be adding another space or scientific tattoo to my other bicep next year. And yes... certain parts of the Tattoo process hurt like a son of a gun...Look at the note to where it hurt a lot. :)
Famous for being the most photographed rock formation in Alabama Hills, the Arch can also be used to frame some of the more interesting spots like these jagged rocks and the Sierra Nevada opposite
on the west.
I made another attempt to catch the moon setting at sunrise with Mt Whitney and decided to shoot the ever-popular Mobius arch under the full moon. Nothing original here, but it was fun! I used my led headlamp as fill light. I also put Mt Whitney in the arch, and moved back to show the entire rock formation.
Ship design is heavily inspired by the "Mobius" from the Galaxy Outlaws series: www.audible.com/pd/Galaxy-Outlaws-The-Complete-Black-Ocea...
For those that enjoyed Firefly, Expanse, Cowboy Bebop, it's a great series. The author is simply an engineer who was sad that Firefly got cancelled. It's less focused on realistic physics and more focused on characters and fun.
The plan was to photograph this with the Milky Way. Oh well, I guess I'll be going back!
It's been a while since I took a photo with 4x5 equipment and developed it in analog format. Before I knew it, it had been since November of last year. Shooting digitally can be done quickly, but with Photogravure it was difficult to create the right neutral tones by it. Developing analog film takes time and effort, and also requires scanning. Even so, the gradation created there is wonderful, and it even feels three-dimensional. If possible, I would like to continue creating works using analog film. On the other hand, I have recently started using washi paper, which is very thin and requires careful handling, but the results always take my breath away. My friends overseas taught me about the materials from my country, but for a long time I didn't know how great they were. I want to create more excellent works that are suitable for this material.
Still working and cleaning up shop as I prepare for an art show next weekend. I love going though old files and playing around with shots as it gives me a chance to measure where I've come with my editing, but also it allows me to re-live some of the great travels photography has given me the chance to take. This is a shot from last February on a bootcamp trek through the eastern Sierras. Jave, Breezy, Alan and Diego were all over the place in the Alabama Hills this morning while I plunked down in front of Mobius and simply would not budge. Cheers to great photo pals, great photo adventures, and great trips through the archives. -jared r.
Of course I chose to frame the peak that lights up last as the sunrises. I'm not going to lie. I panicked a little as the space to my left was occupied by a couple of other photographers and I was stuck watching all the mountains out of my shot light up. Fortunately it all came together before I decided to run off and photograph a shrub.
Alabama Hills, California.
A composite of Mobius Arch and the milky way shot at 50mm to make it stand out. Hope you enjoy.
I had wanted to shoot the Milky Way over Alabama Hills for awhile now; I contemplated this shot for months. Passed once on it because of high winds. But finally, with friend Patti, we got it done. This arch, and the intimacy I feel with it, really cemented my love and enjoyment in experiencing our night sky. A little less than 2 years ago, I wedged myself underneath the arch to shoot a startrail series (see the 1st comment below). I think that was really the beginning of my deep appreciation for the Milky Way and dark sky, and I'll keep pursuing it, you can bet.
