These photos are a testament of my family's love for me, that they would pile into a car loaded with half a dozen balloon, my camera gear and tripod and an extension ladder, let me drive them to a nearby open field, and patiently help out as I tried to execute a photo session I'd been imagining for a couple of days.
Two Flickr groups I play in recently mentioned themes around red balloons, and I'd been wanting to try a "flying" picture forever. I envisioned all three boys dangling from a handful of red balloons soaring into the sky... which totally did not happen. Luke was freaked out by the height, Simon was fidgety, and the gale-force wind made the balloons blow horizontally instead of vertically.
Best laid plans and all that. Oh well. As I said to Tristan, every time you try something and it doesn't go according to your plans, you learn something for the next time.
What I learned? That my menfolk love me very much, and are willing to put up with a whole lot of silliness on my behalf. :)

So in Mid June 2020, I was getting kind of bored as my Sailor Pluto was still stuck in the ether. HLJ happened to be doing their Summer Sale, and this piece caught my eye.
This, friends, is the Nendoroid Doll Saber/Altria(Artoria) Pendragon (Alter) Shijuku version... which is a very long way of saying Saber Alter in casual clothing.
Typically, being a Fate item on sale typically means I'd probably bite, but in this case the Fate association was actually more of a further blessing. What caught my eye was the Nendoroid Doll part.
As I generally don't buy these, the whole line just completely disappeared from my mind. I think it was in 2018, Good Smile Company announced the next evolution of the Nendoroid line as a series of different sublines, one of which was the Doll line. Meant to further merge higher end dolls with the Nendoroid world, these figures would be given larger more articulated bodies, magnetic based bases, and the big one, actual outfits.
Overall, I'd say this was meant to compete with the Cu-Poche line from Kobobukiya.
The various peg sizes and whatnot have not changed, so like before you could combine a variety of parts from different sets and up your custom figure game even further. A standard face plate can replace the one for Altria here, or you could even take this plate/head and put it on a standard body.
The aforementioned magnetic base works with a piece of ferrous metal stuck on the standard base, and the feet of the figure having little magnets. Furthermore, now that there are no peg holes, the standard support arm itself has been modified to have a magnet on the base so it can help in posing the figure. There are no holes in the figure, so the standard peg has been changed to a claw, though there is a arm with the usual peg should you need it.
The magnets in the feet aren't the strongest, probably by design, but you can get your figure to stand without the arm.
I don't think the actual price went up, but to compensate for that these come with fewer parts, at least in all the Dolls I took a peek at. Saber here comes with only one head/face, four additional hands for posing and holding Excalibur (sold separately), the various base parts mentioned, and of course her outfit. I'm not sure if this was a special case, but Saber also came with a set of naked feet.
The body itself is definitely improved over the original Action body, with the improvements being hips, ankles, shoulders/biceps being added, and overall range of motion improved. It's not exactly going to turn Saber into Black Widow, but at least she can kind of a convincing Dab.
Paint wise well, there isn't really much in terms of special techniques. The body and the face are the same colour, thank goodness. Paint on the hair is smooth. Decals are sharp and applied properly. All in all, this is still a Good Smile Company product so there better not be any screw ups in this department.
The outfit is functional. I'm not about to go out and say it's Hot Toys or Mezco quality. The undergarments are just kind of there, but her jacket does seem better made than your typical Barbie outfit, with a relatively thick cotton fabric used. There are a vinyl belt with a metal buckle, and her boots are actually made from hard plastic. The zipper is nice to see, even if it is all looks and no function.
Finally, there's build quality. Being a Good Smile Company product, particularly one that's based on a tried and true platform, there's really nothing else to write other than "all is good".
That, friends, was a Nendoroid Doll. It's not a bad product, though personally I'd trade a cloth outfit for more parts and accessories, seeing as they're priced about the same.
Strangely, both Nendoroid Doll and Cu-Poche have been silent since the end of 2019. Clearly there's no shortage of product in general from either of these companies... just not these sub lines. I'm also seeing some good sale prices of several Cu-Poches I wouldn't mind owning.
Maybe they're dead now?

So over the weekend, I finally got around to opening and play with Murasame Kai, who has been imprisoned in plastic since Boxing Day 2020. It was a strange experience, to say the least,
So the Parfom line is ultimately part of the Good Smile Company portfolio, and as mentioned in past articles, are kind of a Figma/Nendoroid hybrid with a focus on its highly expressive face plates. The source material, KanColle, is originally a mobile game where various pieces of naval hardware are personified by girls wearing bits and pieces of their namesake. I'm not at all familiar with this character, and basically bought her because she looked cute. I believe the "Kai" in her name comes from the fact she's in her upgraded form.
The contents of the package are pretty typical from what I can see. You get the main figure, three total face plates, various bits and pieces of a Battleship that make up her outfit and accessory load out, two gun blast effects, two wake effects, a belt for attaching her turrets to her waist, five additional posing hands, a metal chain with anchor, and the standard Parfom stand.
Aesthetically, she's pretty much what I was expecting. Chibified proportions with an oversized head. Nicely detailed hair. There's that one face plate, however, that I have no idea what they were going for, as it's a very vacant stare that I'm use to seeing on Hot Toys Black Widow figures, not so much my anime toys.
I do like that the figure can actually wield the two ship turrets as weapons. Definitely not something I can say any of my other figures can do. The antenna on her ankles look to me like things that can easily break, so be mindful I guess.
The manual, strangely enough, doesn't even mention the guns can be attached to the special hands. She's got a strange design quirk with that Battleship section strapped to her back - there's a very slim mast you're supposed to plug in, but for some reason the hole is positioned such that you can't stick the thing in straight, nor does the manual show how it's supposed to look when assembled.
Articulation is incredibly mixed bag, even though you wouldn't think it looking at her. So in terms of joints, Murasame has everything you'd expect her to have - ankles, single jointed knees, thigh twists, hips, waist, mid torso, dual shoulders with standard movement and some lateral movement, single jointed elbows, wrist, head, and one point for each twintail.
What's frustrating is I don't know exactly what happened, but raising her leg forwards or backwards at the hip is incredibly difficult, and the limited range of motion you get basically lets you make her stand kind of cool. From what I can tell, it's not the skirt that's in the way, but rather it's a design limitation of the cavity for the ball joint itself. Furthermore, as limited as the leg movement its, it's still better than the really limited head movement, which is really limited to just swiveling with almost no tilting options. An extra joint midpoint of the twintails wouldn't have hurt either. Ankle joints don't really allow for much movement other than swiveling.
Paint wise, this figure is ironically the best of the four that I own. She definitely didn't have wet paint right out the box like with my Amazon. Masking is cleaner, though it's far from perfect, but at least it meets Revoltech levels of cleanliness. Otherwise, paint blemishes can be attributed to the underlying plastic parts being warped. Her overall cleanliness can probably be attributed to the fact that the black is the base colour on her outfit, and is the predominate colour. Work on the faceplates meets the high expectations I have.
Finally there's build quality. Again, strangely this is one of the better assembled Parfom in my stash. With the other ones, there's parts that don't quite fit perfectly in their sockets and what not. Not here.. everything comes together and stays together. QC issues are limited to some rough finishes here and there. Otherwise, all other typical areas of concern are addressed.
In conclusion, strange situation where the overall product has a better spit polish on it than the rest I own, but oddly, worse range of motion despite a pretty freeing school girl outfit and of course, that strangely vacant stare. The top heaviness due to the backpack is not surprising, so you're gonna need that stand if you decide to pose her fully equipped.
The good news. however, is she's not that expensive.. in fact, I think she may be one of the least expensive ones aftermarket of the entire Parfom line. So if you're looking for something that's cute and live with some generic posing, this might scratch that itch.
