Astros Alex Bregman is R.B.I. Baseball’s latest cover star!
Years ago, maybe 40 years ago, there were some baseball fields near the Melbourne airport. These were, I think, remnants of the days when the New York Giants training camp was in Melbourne, FL, as depicted in the film "Big Leaguer" (1953) with Edward G. Robinson.
Amazingly, traces of the old practice fields can still be seen in Google Maps or Google Earth. This field is on airport property, just south of the terminal building. The street at the bottom of the image is NASA Blvd.
I enhanced the contrast a bit on this image. There are four baseball diamonds, with the home plates nearest the center of the image.
The existence of baseball fields here may even date back to World War II, when the airport was Naval Air Station, Melbourne.
MLB is both the airport code and "Major League Baseball".
This is a 2006 Google Earth image. (see map)
Note: the 2011 Google Maps image doesn't really show the ball fields at all. I think you have to look at certain times of the year. Also, I walked out there and couldn't see a thing from ground level.
The Minnesota Twins also trained at Melbourne. I'm not sure what years that was. Baseball games were also held at Wells park, now the Melbourne Public Library.
I saw all MLB players has Red Cross logo on helmets in action.
