Itsukushima (厳島, Itsukushima?) is an island in the Inland Sea of Japan. It is popularly known as Miyajima (宮島, Miyajima?), the Shrine Island. Itsukushima is part of the city of Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture. The island was the town of Miyajima prior to the 2005 merger with Hatsukaichi.

Itsukushima is famous for the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to records, the shrine was established in the time of Empress Suiko. The warrior-courtier Taira no Kiyomori gave the shrine its present form. In 1555, Mori Motonari defeated Sue Harukata at the Battle of Miyajima. Toyotomi Hideyoshi built a large building, the Senjō-kaku, on a hill above the shrine.

I had already packet my stuff for the day, after having arrived to the island quite early in the day and literaly explored almost each square inch of it, I was already on the queue to board the ferry that would take me back to main land, when all of the sudden I saw the shrine being lit, I just couldn't help it, got straight back to this view point and took a few more snaps :)

This is the purple cast I was talking about yesterday. Some combination of being out of date and roasting in the back seat of a car in July turned everything on this roll of film to this lovely shade of purple. I didn't trust the film, so I took plenty of shots on good film too, but I quite like the purple here. Since the day was quite gray, I think it gives the photo some character.

Miyajima actually means "Shrine Island," the real name of the island is Itsukushima, but I've never heard anyone call it that.
