IMAGE VIEW INFORMATION
The date of this image (and others taken by Star Photo Co. at the same time) is likely to be prior to approx. mid 1895, since J.H. Wills' first boatshed (approved for construction in Dec 1894) had not yet been built in their other images of the series, taken no doubt at the same time.
This view is most likely looking south-west from where the Woronora River meets the Georges River, west of the old rail bridge towards an old fisherman with his hut, boat & nets. I believe the fisherman shown here is "Old Dick" - one and the same with one mentioned in an old newspaper article in the Australian Star (Sydney), dated Wednesday 17 Apr 1889, which I found in Trove, which reads (quote) -
"OLD DICK, OF COMO --
--- A good many visitors to Como who have enjoyed their visit to that locality have patronised old Dick, the fisherman, who has been on the George and Woronoo(sic) Rivers for over 50 years, and is regarded as the pioneer fisherman of the place. They will be sorry to hear that a few nights ago his fishing net was stolen, and his boat stove in by some ill-disposed persons, and that he is left without the means of subsistence. It is proposed to lend him a hand in his trouble, and the Como people have decided to subscribe for a new boat and net for "Old Dick", and it is hoped that Sydney people who have had many good days' outing with him will bear a hand. Mr George Agnew, of Como, will gladly supply further particulars or receive further subscriptions."

ADDITIONAL HISTORIC INFORMATION
STAR PHOTO CO. was operated by the proprietor William Livermore (chief photographer). I found an early notice in the Daily Commercial News & Shipping List (Sydney) which shows the Star Photo Co. had imported 1 case of "pictures" (probably photographic glass plates) from Victoria, passing Customs on 3 Apr 1894. I would suggest that other biographical entries found on websites that claim the Star Photo Co. was only operational from 1898 would therefore appear to be incorrect. Clearly, the Co. was already actively engaged in the photographic business from at least as early as Apr 1894.
Between catching up from my break, driving about in the floods, catching up on tutorials and processing, I didn't get much chance today to do a "proper shot". I still was able to get a shot so I'm happy! :-) Took this at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow.

As part of Sydney Open the State Library of New South Wales conducted tours of the reading rooms. The Mitchell Library connects the original two buildings and is the newest addition in this section of library. It's a stunning space, with lots of natural light flowing in, making it just about the perfect space to read any of the 5 million books available to the public.
Evening traffic in Charing Cross, Glasgow. It was pretty cold but I wanted to get some shots of the Mitchell Library after work. Need to get out and practice more I think but this is my favourite shot after a little Lightroom love.
The Mitchell Library was officially opened on 8 March 1910, and opened to the public the next day, 9 March.

The Mitchell Library is one of Europe’s largest public libraries with over one million items of stock and is the hub of a city-wide information service. With its distinctive green dome, the building has been one of the city’s iconic landmarks since it opened in 1911 and is also home to The Mitchell Theatre, an exhibition hall and the Herald Café Bar.

- This land sale map/advertisement poster is the pre-cursor to the later sale held in 1889 & shows that most of the allotments closest to the Georges River had already been sold.
- Note that no mention or mark is made on the map to indicate the presence of the later Victorian-styled version of the Como Hotel (construction/official opening of that version not completed until late 1890). It was to be constructed on Lot 3 along Cremona Rd.
- The earlier version of the "Como Hotel" [aka "Woronora Hotel" in early newspaper clippings] (seen at Lot 91 in Novara Crescent) was a single storey, wooden structure mainly purposed for accomodation.

FURTHER HISTORICAL INFO
- The renaming of MIMOSA BAY to SCYLLA BAY (circa 1911-1922)
"Sutherland Council's Works Committee have recommended the erection of a wharf and baths near Mimosa Bay. The Committee were also of opinion that if the road from Como to Sutherland could be constructed for £150 it should be considered" - The St George Call, Sat 26 Aug 1911.
- However, by Jul 1922 residential land at the newly created "Scylla Bay Heights" estate in Como was being advertised as far away as Wyalong, New South Wales - in The Wyalong Advocate and Mining, Agricultural and Pastoral Gazette, Friday 28 July 1922.
The Tasman Map is hand drawn on delicate Japanese paper. It bears the arms of the City of Amsterdam. Just below the Tropic of Capricorn are the tracks of Abel Tasman's two ships Heemskerck and Zeehaen.
The map combines the results of Abel Tasman's first (1642-1643) and second (1644) voyages with those of earlier Dutch navigators. It shows a surprisingly accurate general outline of the Australian coastline.
Princess George of Greece presented the original Tasman Map to the Library in 1931. The origins of the map are uncertain. Once thought to have been drawn under Tasman's personal supervision - possibly by his chief pilot, Franz Jacobszoon Visscher - it now seems likely that the map was created c. 1695, derived from an imperfect original map, itself compiled in 1644 from authentic original maps, including those of Tasman's two voyages.
In recognition of the Tasman Map's significance, a stunning marble mosaic reproduction forms part of the floor of the historic Mitchell Library vestibule at the State Library of New South Wales. The mosaic, which was created by Sydney craftsmen the Melocco Brothers in 1939, took many hours of painstaking and accurate work to complete.
It was book group tonight. Without a group. And books. It's a holiday weekend in Glasgow, so most of the group were going away for the weekend, which just left two of us. We decided to meet up anyway and had cake, tea and coffee and a good old natter for a couple of hours.
I decided not to take a photo of cake tonight (chocolate fudge cake - very dense and gooey and yummy) as I'll take one for tomorrow, so here is my favourite corridor in the Mitchell Library!

IMAGE INFO
- Only a handful of people can be seen along the pier.
- Photographer's viewpoint is looking east from Arden Street.
- I have dated this image to Circa January 1932, since:
(a) It is very likely during the January School Holidays (mid-summer conditions).
(b) The number of this real photo post-card at No. 347 is substantially higher (& therefore produced later) than the No. 131 Coogee Pier & beach pic dated January 1931, when the Pier is clearly still operating (albeit only just) & still open to the paying public.
(b) The COOGEE OCEAN PIER was closed to the public circa mid 1932 by order of Randwick Council (shortly after this pic would have been taken) - interest having died away rapidly after the grand opening in November 1929 due to expensive entrance fees & lack of promised on-pier attractions. The Pier was demolished by April-May 1934.

IMAGE VIEW INFORMATION
The date of this image (and others taken by Star Photo Co. at the same time) is likely to be prior to approx. mid 1895, since J.H. Wills' first boatshed & access path (approved for construction in Dec 1894) has not yet been built just south of the southern rail bridge abutment on the western embankment (ie - the bare ground on right of the pic).
The view is looking east from where the Woronora River (coming in from the right of pic) meets the larger Georges River, west of the old rail bridge. Where the men are in the rowboat is not far from "Old Dick's" fisherman's hut. He was mentioned in an old newspaper article in the Australian Star (Sydney), dated Wednesday 17 Apr 1889, which I found in Trove, which reads (quote) -
"OLD DICK, OF COMO --
--- A good many visitors to Como who have enjoyed their visit to that locality have patronised old Dick, the fisherman, who has been on the George and Woronoo(sic) Rivers for over 50 years, and is regarded as the pioneer fisherman of the place.
