Mitaly campaigned against child marriage in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has one of the highest rates of child marriage worldwide. Having seen the negative effects of child marriage in her community, she wanted to bring about an end to the practice.
“Most families in the area are very poor. They have lots of children and cannot afford food. They see the girl child as a burden."
She was the leader of a youth group that promoted gender equality and Mitaly is now training to be a nurse in Dhaka. The group spoke with their neighbours and family about how a girls' rights are violated through early marriage.
"We feel proud when we stop a child marriage. Marriage is a pleasure and a cheerful thing, but before 18, it is not joyful. Girls face sadness for a whole lifetime and face violence in their family," she says.
Between 2014 to 2016, UK aid supported Mitaly's group in Narail district through the Manusher Jonno Foundation which helps promote the rights of vulnerable and marginalised people.
