Dolly Sods Wilderness Area in West Virginia by durand clark

This area has a total of 17,371 acres and is located in Grant, Tucker and Randolph counties. Elevation gain from 2500' to 4700'. Wind carved sandstone, stunted Red Spruce, grassy meadows and Splagnum Moss Bogs dominate the Sods. The area was logged from the 1880's through the 1920's. Massive wildfires and rainstorm eroded the area. The U.S. Army used the area for Artillery Training during W.W.II. Unexploded shells are are hazard. A beautiful area that a tribute to man's misuse of nature.

White Spruce Grove.......

An unusually nice day found us hiking the trails of White Spruce Park;

This shot is of the spruce trees that once dominated this park, after years of misuse the park is now mostly bare of the white spruce trees that once dotted the area; the few remaining trees are relegated to the edge of the park and the surrounding woodlands are being decimated by new housing developments and a creeping malaise of urban sprawl.. .

Kanaka Creek Regional Park is a regional park of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, located in the city of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, flanking both sides of Kanaka Creek from its confluence with the Fraser River just east of Haney and extending approximately 11 km (7 mi) up the creek to just south of the community of Webster's Corners. The Maple Ridge Fairgrounds are just east of the lower regions of the park, beyond them is the community of Albion. Derby Reach Regional Park is just across the Fraser in Langley.

A variety of plants and animals can be located in all 3 areas of the park and it is a popular spot for both Black Bear and Salmon populations. Kanaka Creek Regional Park has a rich history- the first purchase of land for the park by the City of Maple Ridge occurred in the late 1970s, and the land is the traditional unceded territory of the Katzie, Kwantlen, Matsqui, Musqueam, Semiahmoo, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. Recently, misuse of the land has negatively changed parts of the park. To fix this issue, Metro Vancouver Regional Parks implemented a 20 year management plan in 2004 with the assistance of the Katzie First Nation among other groups, and the University of Victoria (UVIC) completed a restoration project in areas of the park in 2022.

Recreation

Kanaka Creek is widely recognized for its natural beauty, as well as recreational appeal. According to a local newspaper, the Daily Hive, Kanaka is the 8th most popular park in metro Vancouver, with 610,500 visitors in 2022. The park features walking, hiking, and biking trails publicly available to anyone who wants to use them. Along these walks there is plenty of flora and fauna to view. The park also has a lake in which visitors can fish, or canoe. The park is wheelchair accessible, and equipped with parking and public washrooms.

The 400 ha. park has three main areas. The Riverfront area adjacent to the Fraser and BC Hwy 7 has picnic tables and a boat-launch, suitable for launching canoes and kayaks for navigating the slow-moving waters of Kanaka Creek up as far as the 240th Street bridge. The Riverfront Trail winds along this stretch of the creek and has a number of three-story wooden viewing towers. Above 240th Street the stream is shallower and full of snags and not suitable for boating. Above that a popular swimming hole with slickrock slides is at Cliff Falls. There are twin falls on Kanaka Creek, one on each of its upper fork. Much of the upper area of the park is heavily forested, though hiking along the creek beds is feasible and a number of wooden walkways through the forest and along the creek have been established in the area.

Happy anniversary to one of my favorite places in the world. John Muir’s “Range of Light”, Yosemite, was set aside by the federal government, #onthisdayinhistory , 135 years ago. This action predates the founding of the National Park Service and even Yellowstone’s incorporation as the first National Park. Yosemite came before all of that, set aside under the care of California, for all to enjoy. For me, Yosemite is the place of quiet contemplation and spiritual grandeur that really threw my love of the National Parks into overdrive. It is the best example of what ‘America’s best idea’ is and an inspiration to the world. And today, in 2025, The National Park Service is woefully underfunded, understaffed, abused, and at the whims of a hostile government that is shut down. The park, however, isn’t. Yosemite will remain open, a blessing for those who visit respectfully, but at the whims of those who will abuse and misuse their public lands. Once these places are ruined, they are gone. Once they are misused, they are damaged. We must continue to honor them. We must continue to fight for them. Anything less is capitulation to a government that expects your compliance to a system that is designed to favor the few over the many and totally discount the true meaning of what Yosemite stands for and represents. Speak up. Be a light for the Range of Light.

The word awesome is so often misused nowadays but I did find this vast building utterly awesome !! It did indeed take my breath away , both in viewing & then climbing the many stairs .A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Lhasa , Tibet ,it took around 50 years to construct ,starting in 1645 .This was the main residence of the current Dalai Lama until 1959 when he fled to India as the Chinese military took occupation of Tibet .

Better not, it might break my foot! 😅 A couple of words about my experience with this strange (and cumbersome) lens:

This is a giant and heavy motorized zoom lens originally used in a Noritsu minilab. I (clumsily) removed the motors and adapted it in a very haphazard way. From a conversation with Robert OToole I knew that I had to brace myself for heavy chromatic abberations and so my expectations were somewhat muted already.

It‘s safe to say this isn‘t a great lens to adapt. It also stands to reason though that there are interesting shots to be taken with every lens imaginable. So keeping that in mind I didn‘t try to go for maximizing IQ but rather just have fun with the lens. That goal was certainly achieved, you be the judge if the shortcomings of this lens (or my misuse) ruin it or not!
