Newport's claim to fame is its astounding collection of Gilded Age mansions, built back when the cooler climate of Rhode Island and the sea breezes provided a summer respite for the well-to-do from the New York area in particular. The Vanderbilts in particular were leading members of the community, and built a number of estates. These were non-ironically called "cottages," and the most striking of them was the Marble House built by William Kissam Vanderbilt and inhereited by his (ex-)wife Alva after their divorce. Its name derived from the fact it was built and clad entirely in marble, white for the exterior and many hues on the inside. Appropriately, it was the site of the Tiffany Ball of 1957, which marked the start of attempts the Newport Preservation Society which has taken possession of many of the old cottages.
