Silverton Museum is located in the old gaol buildings. Silverton was established in the 1880s after miners came to the region seeking silver. Lead and zinc was also found in the region. Most miners moved on to the larger centre of Broken Hill nearby and Silverton gradually dwindled towards becoming a ghost town. It has been maintained as a tourist destination. Located in far western New South Wales in Australia.
TOMBSTONE ARIZONA: To many people the name creates images of gunfights and dusty streets, whiskey and Faro games, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and numerous old western movie scenes. However, Tombstone is a real town in southern Arizona, known as "The Town Too Tough to Die, and today tourism is its main industry.
While in town we attended a very enjoyable comedy gunfight, and seen here are the two 'bad' guys who were bank robbers. (13-02-28-1670)

The silver mining town of Pioche reached it's peak in the 1870's, when it had a population of about 6,000. Today around 1000 people live in town. It is a wonderful and historic frontier town to explore.
Porter Brothers Store Ruins - Erected in 1906. The Porter Brothers had three stores in California. They moved merchandise from their Ballarat, California store, across Death Valley, to their "Rhyolite Emporium".
(From BLM brochure)
The town of Rhyolite was founded in 1904 when gold was discovered in the nearby Bullfrog Mining District. It quickly become a boom town, boasting three railroad lines, three banks, an opera house and numerous saloons and restaurants. The prosperity didn't last long and by 1910 Rhyolite was in decline. Today it is the best known ghost town in Nevada, administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
Gold was discovered in Gregory Gulch in 1859. Within one year, 10,000 people arrived in the area. Central City became known as "The richest square mile on earth". Today, Central City is an interesting mining town to explore. Much more historic than neighboring Blackhawk, which has been overrun with fancy casinos.
Here is the front door of the abandoned Morris State Bank in the semi-ghost mining town of Pony,Montana.
Ballarat had a jail and a morgue all contained in one building. There is a modern sign joking that this can be used as a motel when empty.

Mogollon 'ghost' town, located in the wild mountains of southwest New Mexico, visited September 8, 2014. Much to my disappointment, it was much more 'town' than 'ghost', with only a handful of abandoned buildings but several houses and a few businesses, lots of people about getting things fixed up and prepared for the winter. The drive up this location was more interesting than the town itself, one-lane hairpin curves carved out of the hillside. Mogollon boasted a population of several thousand in the late nineteenth century and produced many millions of dollars in gold and silver, but as with all these mining towns, eventually fell victim to played out mines and changing economic fortunes, as well as multiple fires and floods (a creek runs through the middle of the main street).
Cripple Creek is an historic mining town located high up in the Colorado Rockies. Founded in 1890 during the Colorado Gold Rush, ten years later it had a population of over 50,000. Today it is a popular tourist town, with casinos taking over most of the downtown buildings.
Old hood ornament from an old abandoned Oshkosh heavy-duty truck. I love the old indian headdress logo. Interestingly, the company has distanced itself from its own history of using this trademark in the paranoia inspired policially-correct culture we now inhabit.
What could possibly be negative about using this indian headdress as a logo? Why has portraying people-groups as strong or brave become insulting?

Nevada City was founded in 1863 when gold was discovered in Alder Gulch. By 1864 there were 10,000 people mining in the area. After the gold rush, the town quickly declined. Today Nevada City is mostly an open air museum with over 100 historic buildings. Some are original Nevada City structures, others have been brought here from other areas of Montana.
Greenwood, British Columbia; the building on the left was built in 1899 as was the ornate Windsor Hotel next to it. The building on the right was the Pacific Hotel, built in 1908.
Greenwood was a booming mining town in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Today it is a pleasant community with a number of interesting historic buildings from its earlier days.
The mission of the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum is to bring about a better understanding and appreciation by the community of its history and cultural heritage of mining, ranching, skiing, and other activities which have been indigenous to the East River Valley, particularly Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte. The Museum is committed to making the past a living part of our community’s future.
A Brief History
Crested Butte is a Certified Local Government and, as such, strives to protect the historical nature of our community through its architectural review commission. We are the only non-profit organization within the community dedicated to historical preservation activities. From 1982 to 1994 there was no historical Museum in Crested Butte or Mt. Crested Butte, and without a museum there was not a repository for the many historical pieces from its past mining era and more recent skiing history. The Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum, Inc. was formed in 1993 to raise funds to display and organize the collection.
The Museum was set up in only 700 square feet of the old D&RGR Depot in September 1994. It soon became apparent that a larger and more central location was required. An appeal to the community for funds and artifacts to expand the collection was launched and, with the aid of grant from the State Historical Fund, the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum opened in the Spritzer House in the Historic District in December 1995.
As the organization grew, it became evident in the summer of 2000 that the Museum needed to move once again to a larger and more prominent location in Crested Butte to allow for the long-term growth of its displays and collection. The Museum decided to take the opportunity to move its location to the historic Crested Butte Hardware Store, locally known as Tony’s Conoco, located on Elk Avenue. Tony’s is centrally located and is one of the more significant buildings in the town’s Historic District and carries with it a spirit that represents the very best of Crested Butte. The “Save Tony’s” campaign was launched to raise the funds for acquisition and rehabilitation. The building was acquired in September 2001; rehabilitation commenced in June 2002 and opened to the public in July 2003.
Tony’s Conoco was originally built in 1883, making it one of the oldest standing structures in town. It housed the town’s blacksmith shop and in 1911 the first gas pump. Tony Mihelich became a partner in the store in 1940 and ran it as Crested Butte Hardware and Auto Supply until his death in 1996. Locals have affectionately called the business “Tony’s Conoco” for many years.
The Museum’s acquisition of Tony’s Conoco has ensured that the building will retain its integrity as a historic structure and that the building will not succumb to either a non-appropriate use or to the harsh mountain elements. The new location gives the Museum a highly visible permanent home
Side note- when I lived here in 1975-1976 it was still a hardware store and the old timers would sit aournd this stove and smoke and tell stories
