I took these photos several years ago in rural Storey County, Nevada on one of the roads that goes to and from Virginia City. I'm 99% sure that this is what remains of an antique Caterpillar tractor. You can see the 4 cylinder engine block sitting on top of the tread. Caterpillar was one of the first companies to mass produce farm tractors with treads (otherwise known as continuous tracks).

I photographed this 1942-1947 pre-F-Series Ford flatbed truck several years ago in rural Storey County, Nevada on one of the roads that goes to Virginia City. Ford like all other American auto manufacturers stopped production of all civilians cars & trucks during WWII from 1942 through 1946.

I really have no idea what the hell this decades old device is but I like its rustic appearance.

Two huge mining dump trucks pass each other at about the same place on the road where a bulldozer waits. Men-at-work - busy, busy, busy. Okay, maybe there is a woman operating each of them. I could not get close enough to guess.

I swear this is an Arizona copper and gold mine, even if it looks like a Cecil B. DeMille movie set.

A different view of the Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold mining operation, a little further up the mountain than the previous shot. That is US-191 that runs off the right bottom of the photo in two places. The other two curling off on the right near the horizon are working mine support roads. I used to dream about riding roads like these in my motorcycling days. The closest we had come to this before was a paved logging road in Idaho. “Twisties” we said back then; “Dumb-asses” non-bikers said. Oh well

Two empty huge trucks climb up a mine road to pick up another load of mined ore .. . looking a whole lot like a big box of big rocks when filled. Less easy to spot (on the right) is a third such truck loaded “to the gills” with ore truding up the hill to deliver a load to a unseen location to the left of this photo. Check out the terraces on the wall of a pit in the forground. Something must drive on those thin strips and I hope it isn’t these monster trucks for the drivers’ sake.

Our introduction to the Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold mining operation was made in Clifton, Arizona, but we had not idea of scale until we went up the mountain to Morenci. This is the same cut that you can see the tip of in the prior shot taken from Clifton. We were startled at the overall scale of this operation after just a few more curves. It is a very interesting place to see. Unlike some industries dealing with the environment, this company seems proud of their work and took steps to ensure that there are plenty of places along the highway and connecting roads to take a good look at what they are doing. I like that about them. We all live so well because we humans need to mine. It takes huge mines to support our huge multiple populations. Think about what all is done and made possible with just these two metals and I don’t mean jewelry.

Either Arizona or Freeport-McMoRan Copper&Gold Mining, or both are tourist-friendly. Someone built this roadside viewing area overlooking this huge mine and even added several spots to take photos through the fence without have chain links in your photo. You can see one of them on the right side of this photo). Thanks to whomever!
