Lindenschwärmer

Lime Hawk-moth

☛ Casa Mima, like embroidery - a colonial style building built in the 1920s. One of the many 'Casa Particular' (Bed and Breakfast) of Centro Habana, Cuba. You can admire many interesting and colorful buildings dating from the late 18th century and the 19th century in the Centro Habana district. Many are worn by time and many are undergoing renovation. But the fact remains that they are fascinating and a visit is a must ... on foot, of course!

A beautiful lime hawk-moth was a surprise sighting in a garden centre last Saturday. I moved him to some hedging, as he was perched on a tray of bedding plants!

Another insect that has colonised Ireland in recent years, first being recorded in 2010 - with residence confirmed in 2015. Interestingly the beachhead has been formed in north Dublin as opposed to the southern coast where other recent colonists have become established. It isn’t restricted to Lime as Birch and Alder regularly host the species and other tree species may be used as well.

This one was a welcome surprise in the garden last year.

Google search came up with three translations for the name 'Mima'.

Hebrew: Dove

Spanish (Cuba): a term of endearment for mother

Yiddish: Auntie

And because a little free library was erected in her memory, that makes her alright with me...in any language.
