Visit to Greenfield Village living history museum in Dearborn, Michigan on October 25, 2018. This shop was built ca. 1880 in Detroit, Michigan and converted into a millinery shop by Mrs. Elizabeth Cohen after her husband's death. She operated the shop for several years. Henry Ford later purchased the building and moved the millinery shop here to Greenfield Village.

At the Launceston Cup raceday, the horses are not the only attraction in town. The fashion stakes are just as hard fought on the terrace as on the track.

Here we see the Millinery part of the competition. It's mostly women and their fascinators, but one brave man can be seen at the back of the field in a top hat (God bless him).

My grandmother was a milliner and so she would have loved studying this photograph. But I dare say that when she was making hats, they were not quite as colourful as these.

I'm not a big fan of vignettes, but I thought one here might fit the old-time feel.

A SHIMMERING VISION!

BY MADAM WORTHINGTON, EXCLUSIVE MODISTE

LADIES, THIS IS A TIME OF YEAR TO BE CLAD IN THE UTMOST ELEGANCE AND COMFORT !

THE SHIMMER OF A LONG GROSGRAIN JACKET WILL ASSURE YOU OF ADMIRING GLANCES! WARM AND COMFORTABLE? OF COURSE…!

A FULLY LINED SKIRT, AND LONG ENOUGH TO DEFY THE COLD!

AND I CANNOT IGNORE THIS! A SUPERBLY DESIGNED HAT THAT WILL EARN FULSOME COMPLIMENTS, AND NOT A LITTLE RESPECT.

( Image owned by the account holder)

And a few words from a dutiful mannequin….

‘Oh yes! It seemed only too right, to be parading a fine jacket and hat for the ladies who make it all worthwhile. Where would we be without them?!

Would the outfit appeal to a high-born lady? Or a comfortably off dowager looking to grace a social occasion of a certain renown? These were the thoughts encouraged by staff and organisers on this and many occasions when getting ready to face an audience of valued customers……

Nerves tingling, of course, but after much support and preparation, a mannequin who listened properly could, nine times out of ten, carry out her duty with full poise and confidence….

( And a very dignified lady in the audience came up later and whispered, if I recall rightly: “ You do so remind me of my dear Aunt! At her age she didn’t have much conversation. But she was always immaculately powdered and turned out, till her dying day!” All I could say was “Thank you!” How memories are stirred at these showings! ’.

‘ Is that her again? Or someone else?’ ' As I said before, you never know, after the powder and paint has done its work to perfection!’ ‘ I do admit, I would not be surprised if this turned out to be Doris, after a visit to the local beauty parlour. A popular place for millinery was Paignton in those days…’ ' Yes, I remember it was, in those days..'
