A Blueberry hermit crab (Coenobita purpureus)
Using a beige plastic cap as a protective home.
Location: Kunigami Village, Okinawa
The blueberry hermit crab made the switch into a a donated turbo shell (Miller #167). Hermit crabs do not prefer plastic they are just adapting with what is available. This is a good example of Adaptive behavior. Would you like to see video clips or the hermit crabs making the switch?
Shell donated by Tony Choi
Every hermit crab found adapting with our waste receives a new home (seashell). I bring a bucket with an assortment of shells with me on my beach hikes. The hermit crabs are placed in the bucket and make the switch (mts4n). They get a better home and I keep the plastic
