Hey, look, a cool little tugboat!
It was a nice cold evening in Helsinki mid-January and I was walking downtown with my camera. I saw this nice tugboat and thought I'd try to do one scale model mashup without having anything in front of the model to help blending it to the scene. A free flying spaceship against the sky is probably the most common of these type of photographs, but I haven't really done those (except once). I think they are difficult to do. This time I shot a few frames of the tugboat for trying this out.
I tried to match the models to the lighting and atmosphere of the original photograph the following night, but the delicate winter light wasn't that easy to catch. I tried a couple of times but the subsequent sunsets were very different than on the night I shot this. There are some issues that don't go away even when I edited the photo quite heavily.
Now the weather outdoors is wet and almost all the snow is gone, I'm not going to keep this hanging on my computer desktop anymore hoping I might be able to improve it some day soon. I probably couldn't anyway.
I like how the engine reflection on the sea water turned out, It think it's a nice touch.
There is this field near to where I Iive, an old football field. It hasn't been used for 15 years now, the grass is cut once every summer, that is all. It's a quiet place.
I go for walks on that old football field. Sometimes I take the dog, sometimes I just walk there myself, alone with my thoughts. I always walk this one particular path. It is entirely possible I have made that path, I never see anyone else there.
I like that old football field.
That's why you don't see dogs in Star Wars. In case you ever wondered. :D
Happy New Year, have fun!
I thought I'd end the year with something lighter than usual. The previously uploaded Millennium Falcon photographs actually originated from this, umm... event. My dog (yes, that's my borderterrier) was doing his thing and I had my camera with me. I thought the field looked fabulous frosted like that and while waiting I shot a few frames just in case.
The sound of the ascending Millennium Falcon was quite loud, it scared the living daylights out of the seagulls every time.
Yesterday I had my first real day off in about five weeks, or so. I took a boat to Suomenlinna island fort, this is what it looks like out there. The Millennium Falcon has been the subject of my recent uploads, there is no special reason for it, it's just a fun model to shoot.
This is not what I was supposed to work on today. No sir! This is the result of a day avoiding things I should have been focusing on. Better luck tomorrow.
A fantastic place to watch all sorts of ships pass through the narrow passage and under the bridge. It's amazing how the tilt-shift effect makes everything kinda look like a toy, even that ship. :)
From March 2015, a great day on the road with Wiiman, Shelly, Wiveka and Boris.
This is the last time ever I go on a trip without my DSLR. A compact camera is nice but it's no match for a big camera. On top of that, I managed to make a mistake and leave the camera settings on JPEG file only, no RAW original. :P
Flying casually over the city.
Another b/w photograph. This one has a story to it, it's one of a series of my "empty spots" photographs. Backgrounds taken with a spaceship in mind whenever I come across a nice place, with a suitable spaceship added later.
I did not post this originally (Oct 2013) because I thought it was perhaps not as original as I'd hoped for. A little too close to some of Cedric Delsaux's work. I can't help it though, I come up with them spontaneously.
I also wrote a post about this in the Stuck in Plastic blog. I like to write there from time to time.
From humble beginnings, a legend is born.
Also seems kind of fitting that, according to legend, the cranes in the background inspired George Lucas to create the walkers used by the Empire.
Port of Oakland, California.
Work, work, work... That's what I've been up to. It has been very difficult to find the time to make new photographs.
I had a little break today, met a friend and took a nice snowy walk on the field nearby. I thought I'd check on the spaceship that was there before we got snow. Do you remember it? Well, it was still there and it looks as if it's going to be there for the winter: the doors were closed and all lights were off, a tarp was pulled over the cockpit to protect it from the harsh winter weather.
So, here's my friend's snapshot of that ship while I'm too busy to make new photographs. That's me next to the ship, by the way.
Here's an updated version of Rey flying the Falcon on Jakku! This cockpit works much better than the rendered version!
It was starting to get hot in here. As I bumped into Millennium Falcon in the desert last night, I'd just had to park somewhere near it and wait for the daylight. Daylight is obviously a very good source of light for a bit more serious photo session within classic YT-1300 freighter.
Like I've said, a previous photograph of the Millennium Falcon from a toy box, was a preliminary version. Here's a more serious approach of it, under the two suns in a desert field. This is taken on my indoor studio, where I basically take all my photos, which I upload here in my photo stream.
And yes, this particular version is missing its landing gears, so I had to build them from the scratch. Sometimes a simple trick works like magic!
It was a beautiful winter morning today, I took the dog out for a nice walk as the sun came up. There is this nice path in the nearby forest, I hadn't walked it after the snowfall earlier this week and I thought it would be great to take the dog there.
It was fun – until I saw this! I guess it is an attempt to be considerate, parking that thing away from the driveways and such, but parked like that that piece of junk blocks the path that is supposed to turn left there.
I walked under it with the dog and you know what... I took my keys from my pocket and keyed that thing! That'll teach them.
As an afterthought, I think nobody will notice a new scratch on that. Next time I'll take a spray can.
This was a practice shoot, I noticed a nice spot yesterday with the dog and went back with a camera this morning. The challenge was to see if I can figure out how to put the model behind those twigs and branches on the center of the image. Everyone who has tried to do something like this in Photoshop knows it's not a lot of fun. Sometimes you really can't even do it because of how the twigs are lit from behind (at least I can't) but I think it came out alright this time.
As I was uploading this I had this feeling I had overlooked something, I just couldn't quite catch what it was. I was just about to hit enter when I realized that I may have been influenced by an image by Michael Paul Smith. In a recent photo he had this beautiful afternoon sun light (which I decided to see as an early morning light) and it is quite possible that it still reverberated in my head when I shot this. I couldn't tell, but it is funny how one's mind works.
I returned to a site where this old freighter seem to be resting. Sandstorm was over, too. Everything starts to look bright and hot, again. Perfect weather to take some photographs of Millennium Falcon!
This is an continuation to a story and the photo session I've did earlier this year, showing Millennium Falcon in different weather conditions, kinda.
Do you remember the moment when Han Solo and Chewie blast off from the Echo station on Hoth in the movie The Empire Strikes Back? Han Solo says "Let's hope we don't have a burnout". Well, I wanted to see how Millennium Falcon's burnout would look like. And who will clean up the mess, of course...
This was photographed exclusively for my "Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy" book. I will post more of these here shortly.
Sometimes you just get hung up on a photo, not being able to let go. At least I do.
When I posted the original of this a few days ago it was very late (3 am) and I just left it there and went to bed. In the morning I checked it on my cellphone screen and it left me wondering.
The thing about the first one is that the scale model was shot indoors on my livingroom table. The lighting looks nice in big size on my computer screen, but when I saw it on my cellphone the contrasts seemed to play a little trick on the image and the model looked more dramatic than I thought it would. Or maybe it was just the small size.
So, I made an experiment. I reshot the miniature element the next day to find out the differences between my original tabletop lighting and taking the model outdoors and using the daylight as such. I wanted to see the two images side by side and actually compare the differences. It was interesting.
The massive UCS Millennium Falcon model. This is not mine, I borrowed it from Colin, who lives down the street. I had never seen this in hand and I must say that it’s far more impressive than any photograph can ever express. It’s HUGE!
Now, I am waiting for LEGO to release a new edition of this, a TFA version with the updated antenna. Come on, you know it’s coming, it has to be...
Incidentally, with this particular image I had Fullnilson in mind. I tried to do it a little differently but he has nailed this kind of thing pretty conclusively.
This was photographed exclusively for my "Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy" book.
When you walk in those fields of different locations, you sometimes find something to photograph. I was lucky today to find the Millennium Falcon in the desert field.
This is a preliminary version of my Millennium Falcon, I've owned a several years now, but never actually put in front of the lens. Hopefully I can break some rules and show you more photos of this vehicle (hence the prelimary version). And yes, this particular version is missing its landing gears, so I had to build them from scratch. Sometimes a simple trick works like perfectly!

Trying to make use of the Vintage Collection Falcon for something besides Han and Chewbacca. So here it is with General Calrissian.
Several customs are in this shot, the Rebel Fleet troopers are made mostly from the Endor Han Solo figure, and a couple of the commandos have been customized for variety.
I'm almost in Mos Eisley. A spaceport town, where you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. And I must be cautious. Those are the words I've kept hearing in my head while I was approaching it.
While I was getting closer and closer of Mos Eisley, I saw the Millennium Falcon getting in the air from a one of its hangars. A moment was gone in secs, but I was lucky (as always) and got a photograph of the situ.
Here's something new for the start of the new year. This is the first photo of my Mos Eisley Spaceport project in Lego. I believe, I can even call this town a MOC (My Own Creation), as I've never build anything for my photography needs (other than lighting fixtures, which are not showing in the scenes). I'm going to continue to explore within this micro/mini Lego project of mine and see whether I can get more scenes photographed from the Mos Eisley Spaceport!
And it was about time to have a new photograph of the Millennium Falcon here on my stream! I haven't seen that piece of junk like in years!

Where did those twin suns just go? Wind started to blew the sand all over the place. I didn't had a much time to take more photos of my new discovery. I'd just had to pack my things and call this a day, even though it was just a morning half an hour ago. This is a moment just before the huge sandstorm, where visibility is total zero.
Yeah, this is an new session with the Millennium Falcon. I did a new terrain for this one, a bit more straightforward, I think. Also, wanted to address dry and minimalistic environment on this one.
I took a nice walk to enjoy the beautiful weather the other day. It feels like midsummer already – almost.
You know, that thing is still out there on the old football field near my home, it's been there for months. The last time I photographed it it was snowing...

The fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy just joined my Midi-Scale ship collection! Here comes the Millennium Falcon from Episode IV – A New Hope.
Made of 2,178 pieces, measuring only 34cm and weighing almost 1kg, this compact yet dense Falcon was another unique challenge at this scale. After seeing some great-looking Figscale MOCs of this tricky ship, I couldn't resist making a Midi version.
With this design, I took a different approach than most other Falcons out there, and wanted it to look as sleek and gapless as possible. This resulted in a pretty elaborate and unique mix of paneling techniques that involved a lot of SNOT building.
One of my priorities was to faithfully reproduce the curved saucer shape on both sides of the ship, and not only on top. As a result, the build features all the details and shapes of the original 1977 studio model, from top to bottom.
The overall thickness of the ship was another concern. I wanted it to be as thin as the original, while being able to sandwich some tasty greebles and even the hyperdrive engine bay inside the saucer.
The Falcon has two display modes, "in-flight" with its canted stand, and "landed" with easy-to-install landing gear. It also includes a working ramp.

Unbeknownst to Rey, Chewie returned to Ahch-To. Several times, in fact. Resistance was a word that didn't apply to roasted porg, it was way too delicious to resist.
This sight was the stuff of nightmares to the porgs.
Lionel Lion and Doctor Dog are industrious chaps! They operate the Fabuland Freight Service that delivers all kinds of shipments all over Fabuland. Their ship is the fastest in Fabuland and has plenty of room for any kind of freight - be it letters or cassette tapes. Their trusty ship has compartments for small cargo and specially designed clamps in the front to haul bigger things like mail boxes. "Fabuland Freight Service - Fast, Fabulous and Fun"
This is my entry for the Lego Rebrick building contest "Freighter Wars". The challenge was to build your own YT Corellian Light Freighter from the Star Wars universe. I decided to build this ship because I love Star Wars and I love Fabuland. I think they are a fun and interesting mashup. I certainly had fun building this ship, trying to work in as many Fabuland pieces as possible.
