The pedestrian-only Millennium Bridge opened to the public in 2000, linking St Paul's Cathedral on the north bank of the Thames with Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe in Southwark. The footbridge’s famous tremor has now been fixed, but the “wobbly bridge” nickname endures.
"You know, that ship's saved my life quite a few times. She's the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy!"
The Millenium Spire occupies the spot that had previously been the site of Nelson's Pillar, which the IRA blew up in 1966. I remember Nelson's Pillar from being in Dublin in 1958 (1958! - dating myself here - but I was a small child...). Picture taken through the front window of the double-decker tour bus.
From Wikipedia: Officially named the Spire of Dublin, this tall needle-like structure has already received a number of nicknames including The Spike, The Stiletto in the Ghetto, The Scud in the Mud, The Nail in the Pale, The Metropole, The Stiffy by the Liffey (my personal favorite), the Rod to God, the Pin in the Bin, and the North Pole (O'Connell Street is on the north side of Dublin).
