Christ Church, built almost on the corner of Glenlyon Road and Brunswick Street in Brunswick, is a picturesque slice of Italy in inner city Melbourne. With its elegant proportions, warm yellow stuccoed facade and stylish Romanesque campanile, the church would not look out of place sitting atop a rise in Tuscany, or being the centre of an old walled town. This idea is further enhanced when the single bell rings from the campanile, calling worshipers to prayer.
Christ Church has been constructed in a cruciform plan with a detached campanile. Although not originally intended as such, at its completion, the church became an excellent example of "Villa Rustica" architecture in Australia. Like other churches around the inner city during the boom and bust eras of the mid Nineteenth Century as Melbourne became an established city, the building was built in stages between 1857 and 1875 as money became available to extend and better what was already in existence. Christ Church was dedicated in 1857 when the nave, designed by architects Purchas and Swyer, was completed. The transepts, chancel and vestry were completed between 1863 and 1864 to the designs created by the architects' firm Smith and Watts. The Romanesque style campanile was also designed by Smith and Watts and it completed between 1870 and 1871. A third architect, Frederick Wyatt, was employed to design the apse which was completed in 1875.
Built in Italianate style with overture characteristics of classical Italian country house designs, Christ Church is one of the few examples of what has been coined "Villa Rustica" architecture in Victoria.
Slipping through the front door at the bottom of the campanile, the rich smell of incense from mass envelops visitors. As soon as the double doors which lead into the church proper close behind you, the church provides a quiet refuge from the busy intersection of Glenlyon Road and Brunswick Street outside, and it is quite easy to forget that cars and trams pass by just a few metres away. Walking up the aisle of the nave of Christ Church, light pours over the original wooden pews with their hand embroidered cushions through sets of luminescent stained glass windows by Melbourne manufacturers, Ferguson and Urie, Mathieson and Gibson and Brooks Robinson and Company. A set of fourteen windows from the mid-to-late Nineteenth Century by Ferguson and Urie depicting different saints are especially beautiful, filled with painted glass panes which are as vivid now as when they were created more than one hundred years ago. The floors are still the original dark, richly polished boards that generations of worshipers have walked over since they were first laid. The east transept houses the Lady Chapel, whilst the west transept is consumed by the magnificent 1972 Roger H. Pogson organ built of cedar with tin piping. This replaced the original 1889 Alfred Fuller organ. Beautifully executed carved rood figures watch over the chancel from high, perhaps admiring the marble altar.
Albert Purchas, born in 1825 in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, was a prominent Nineteenth Century architect who achieved great success for himself in Melbourne. Born to parents Robert Whittlesey Purchas and Marianne Guyon, he migrated to Australia in 1851 to establish himself in the then quickly expanding city of Melbourne, where he set up a small architect's firm in Little Collins Street. He also offered surveying services. His first major building was constructing the mansion "Berkeley Hall" in St Kilda on Princes Street in 1854. The house still exists today. Two years after migrating, Albert designed the layout of the Melbourne General Cemetery in Carlton. It was the first "garden cemetery" in Victoria, and his curvilinear design is still in existence, unaltered, today. In 1854, Albert married Eliza Anne Sawyer (1825 - 1869) in St Kilda. The couple had ten children over their marriage, including a son, Robert, who followed in his father's footsteps as an architect. Albert's brother-in-law, Charles Sawyer joined him in the partnership of Purchas and Sawyer, which existed from 1856 until 1862 in Queens Street. The firm produced more than 140 houses, churches, offices and cemetery buildings including: the nave and transepts of Christ Church St Kilda between 1854 and 1857, "Glenara Homestead"in Bulla in 1857, the Melbourne Savings Bank on the corner of Flinders Lane and Market Street (now demolished) between 1857 and 1858, the Geelong branch of the Bank of Australasia in Malop Street between 1859 and 1860, and Beck's Imperial Hotel in Castlemaine in 1861. When the firm broke up, Albert returned to Little Collins Street, and the best known building he designed during this period was St. George's Presbyterian Church in East St Kilda between 1877 and 1880. The church's tall polychomatic brick bell tower is still a local landmark, even in the times of high rise architecture and development, and St, George's itself is said to be one of his most striking church designs. Socially, Albert was vice president of the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects for many years, before becoming president in 1887. He was also an inventor and philanthropist. Albert died in 1909 at his home in Kew, a wealthy widower and much loved father.

Birks was born in Buckley, Flintshire, Wales, on 16 August 1894 to Samuel Birks, a groom, and his wife Mary, née Williams. The family lived at Garden Cottage, Lane End. The youngest of six siblings, Birks was five years old when his father died in a coal-mining accident.[1] He attended the local Anglican school (St. Matthews) in Buckley and was awarded a medal there for 11 years "without ever being absent or late". He was known to be adventurous, being active in boxing and association football as well as the local Church Lads' Brigade.[1] Birks left school at fourteen, before entering the workforce as a labourer and steel rollerman in nearby Shotton.[1] During 1910, Birks is thought to have enlisted in the Royal Artillery, staying in the service for three years.[2] On 29 August 1913, Birks migrated to Australia with two friends Emrys Edward Jones and William Gray (both from Buckley). They sailed from London on the SS Otway disembarking in Melbourne.[1] He went on to work in Tasmania where he stayed with a Herbert Jones (a friend of his brother), South Australia and Victoria as a labourer and later, a waiter.[3] In late March 1914, at the age of nineteen he started a relationship with sixteen year-old Susan Gelven who lived in Largs Bay. Susan kept in contact with Birks throughout his service, although she apparently lost contact with him for some time in mid-1917.[1][4] He is known to have lived in Norwood, a suburb of Adelaide where he lodged with a Mrs E. Cornelius, and in Hobart.[4]
First World War
Birks enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force on 18 August 1914, a few weeks after the war started.[4] He trained at a camp in Broadmedows, and was assigned to the 2nd Field Ambulance of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps.[3] The 2nd Field Ambulance boarded the HMAT A18 Wiltshire in Melbourne on 19 October 1914, and set sail for Egypt. After stopping in Albany, the unit arrived in Egypt on 10 December.[5]
Gallipoli Campaign
Birks' unit was incorporated into the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and was sent into action at the landing at Anzac Cove, providing medical support for the 2nd Infantry Brigade.[5] The 2nd Brigade were also sent to Cape Helles, where they assisted in the attack on Krithia.[6] During the battle, Birks was carrying wounded under heavy shell and rifle fire, in areas where stretchers were unable to reach. His "devotion to duty and good work" earned him his first Military Medal recommendation.[7] On 26 June 1915, Birks was wounded by shrapnel but returned to service the next day, remaining on Gallipoli until 9 September.[3][5]

Birks unit was sent to Marseilles, France, as a part of the British Expeditionary Force.[6] He was promoted to lance corporal on 21 April 1916, and served as a stretcher bearer during the Battle of the Somme.[3][5] On 26 July, Birks was engaged in duties at Pozières, as the Australian and British forces fought for supremacy of the village. Throughout the day, Birks "continually led his squad of stretcher bearers" through the village and Pozières Wood to the frontline, all the while being "exposed to heavy shell fire". Commended for his "constant good services", Birks was recommended for the Military Medal.[8][9][10] The announcement of the decoration was promulgated in a supplement to the London Gazette on 14 November 1916, and he was later presented with his Military Medal by Lieutenant General Sir William Birdwood.[11]
Birks was promoted as a temporary wagon orderly corporal on 5 August 1916,[4] and the rank was made substantive five days later.[4] After his unit moved away from the front line, Birks had an opportunity to return to Buckley. There, he visited his old school and gave them a Turkish flag that he has attained while in Gallipoli.[1] Following his return to France, Birks was hospitalised for five days with pyrexia. He rejoined his unit on 14 February 1917.[5]
Commissioning
Birks took classes at the Australian 1st Division school in France, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 6th Battalion on 4 May 1917.[1] He had served with the battalion earlier while a stretcher bearer, and began serving as an infantryman at Passchendaele.[3] Passchendaele was characterised by the mud of the battlefield, and has been widely used as an example of attrition warfare—both the Commonwealth and German forces were suffering heavy casualties.[12] When the Fifth Army was failing to made any appreciable headway, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig put General Herbert Plumer in command of the offensive.[13]
Victoria Cross
Birks' battalion were ordered to attack and capture the German line parallel to them, and the men moved towards their positions from Zillebeke on the night of 18 September, coming under some fire from gas shells.[14] 19 September was incident-free, with the battalion preparing to attack the next day, in what would become known as the Battle of Menin Road.[13][14] Early in the morning of the 20th, a "light drizzle" fell over the battlefield and at 4am the Germans sent barrages in front of and behind the battalion's position. At 5:40am, the battalion advanced.[14]
The first resistance was met by Birks and a corporal, taking two machine-gun positions as another group of officers rushed a strong post.[14] They were attacked with bombs, and the corporal was seriously wounded. Birks continued on alone. Reaching the rear of the pillbox, he forced the occupants to surrender.[2][3] Birks then led an attack a series of dugouts and pillboxes on the edge of Glencorse Wood, and fought against machine gun and bombs. He also assisted in the reorganisation and consolidation of Australian men who had drifted away from their unit.[3]
The next day, 21 September, enemy shelling in response to the movement of Allied artillery had buried some men in Birks' platoon. Birks attempted to dig out these men, "standing exposed", but another shell aimed at the C Coy post killed Birks, and four others, before he could save them.[2][14]
Legacy

For his actions at Ypres, Birks was subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross,[2] the announcement of which was gazetted on 8 November 1917. His citation read:

For most conspicuous bravery in attack when accompanied by only a corporal, he rushed a strong point which was holding up the advance. The corporal was wounded by a bomb, but 2nd Lt. Birks went on by himself killed the remainder of the enemy occupying the position, and captured a machine gun.
Shortly afterwards he organised a small party and attacked another strong point which was occupied by about twenty-five of the enemy, of whom many were killed and an officer and fifteen men captured.
During the consolidation this officer did magnificent work in reorganising parties of other units which had been disorganised during the operations.
By his wonderful coolness and personal bravery 2nd Lt. Birks kept his men in splendid spirits throughout. He was killed at his post by a shell whilst endeavouring to extricate some of his men who had been buried by a shell.[15]
Birks' grave is in the Perth Cemetery (China Wall) near Ypres.[16] A memorial was constructed at his old school in Wales in 1921,funded largely by contributions from local people. When the school was demolished the Memorial was moved to outside St. Matthews Church where it stands now. On Remembrance Sunday the local branch of the British Legion continues to place a wreath of poppies on the Memorial. A portrait of Fred is on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, alongside his Victoria Cross.[17] He is also remembered in the Museum in Ypres, Belgium (Cloth Hall). His service during the war earned him the 1914–15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.[5]
Ebenezer Lutheran Church and the Wends.
The Sorbs or Wends came from a specific region of Eastern Germany where they spoke Slavic language related to Polish, but totally unrelated to German. When the Sorbs/Wends settled in SA the English settlers assumed they were German because they all spoke German and they attended Lutheran churches. But the Wends were a different ethnic group. Today 35,000 people still speak Sorbian in Germany, despite the persecution they suffered from the Nazis during World War Two. After the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the Congress of Vienna redrew the
map of Europe and Lusatia, where the Sorbs lived, was ceded to Prussia from Saxony. The Prussians oppressed the Sorbs/Wends and after 1830 many migrated to Australia (as well as Canada etc.) Although the first Sorbs/Wends arrived in SA in 1848 the largest migration was in 1853-54 after the great European famine of 1848 and the consequent revolutions. The three major Wendish settlements in SA were St Kitts (near Dutton), Peters Hill (near Riverton) and Ebenezer (near Nuriootpa) but there were other settlements too such as Rosedale and Hope Valley. The lack of Wendish pastors meant that few Wends were ever taught or preached at by Wends. Only at Ebenezer were children ever taught in Wendish language but church services were conducted in Wendish at Peters Hill and Ebenezer.
The Ebenezer- Neukirch area a few kilometres north of Nuriootpa appealed to early settlers because of the flat terrain. Johann Dallwitz, a Wend was one of the first white settlers here in 1852 and he is credited with having named the place Ebenezer which is a Biblical phrase meaning “hitherto hath the Lord helped us”. Most of the original 72 Wendish settlers at Ebenezer came to SA on the ship Helene in 1851. A Wendish Lutheran congregation was formed here in 1852 and the first St. John’s Lutheran church was erected in 1859. Dallwitz came to be the teacher at the Lutheran school. The thatched roof church was demolished and replaced in 1905 with this grand church we see today. The Lutheran school here is especially important as it was the only school in Australia to teach in the Wendish or Sorbian language. Dallwitz retired in 1863 when his son took over the school until 1908. In 1871 a new bigger school room was built and it still remains albeit in poor condition today.
The Lutheran church here is important too for a number of reasons. Firstly inside is a Lemke pipe organ hand built by a Barossa Valley resident in 1875. It was built for the original church and was moved into the current 1905 church. Secondly it was from this church that the Great Trek of 1868 started. At that time a group of four Wendish and four German families set out, like the Boers of South Africa, with their covered wagons on a long trek with all their possessions to the new agricultural region of the Riverina in New South Wales. They settled at Walla Walla where their descendants still live. Thirdly the church is important because it was the home of one of the two major Lutheran Synods of SA. A split between two early Lutheran pastors in SA led to divisions within the Lutheran churches in Australia for over 100 years. Basically, followers of Pastor Kavel (Hahndorf/Bethany) ending up forming ELIS, the Immanuel College synod whilst those followers of Pastor Fritsche (Lobethal) formed ELSA (Evangelical Lutheran Synod Australia.) But there were also independent churches and other small Lutheran synods in SA. The independents and ELIS (Immanuel Synod) members met here at Ebenezer in 1921 and formed UELCA – the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia. The driving force behind this amalgamation in 1921 was the ending of World War One and the need for Australian Lutheran synods to take charge of the many German missionaries in Papua New Guinea. It was 1956 before the Evangelical Lutheran Synod Australia (ELSA) amalgamated with UECLA (the former ELIS) to form a single Lutheran church synod in Australia- LCA, Lutheran Church of Australia.

The "X" on the funnels is a greek "Chi" and stands for "Chandris" - she was part of the Chandris line.
This was the ship that my family migrated to Australia aboard in 1965. She carried many migrants to Australia in her time.
Built in 1932, she was originally named "Lurline" of the Matson line, and had distinguished herself during WW2 serving as a troop carrier, and was fortunate to have left Pearl Harbour in 1941 about 3 days prior to the Japanese attack.
Former Australian PM John Curtin sailed on her as part of a voyage to meet with President Roosevelt.
She was scrapped in the 1980's and parts of her were cannibalized for use on "Britanis" another Chandris ship.
She may not be as pretty as some of the more modern ships, but with a history of over 50 years she touched the lives of many people who, todoay, would probably never have had the chance to cruise.

Constable Bill Hargreaves was a former British Army warrant officer who became a top motorcycle policeman in the Queensland Police Force in Australia. He migrated to Australia from Aldershot, UK in 1956 with his wife, June, and their children.

A set of fourteen windows from the mid-to-late Nineteenth Century by Ferguson and Urie depicting different saints are especially beautiful, filled with painted glass panes which are as vivid now as when they were created more than one hundred years ago. The floors are still the original dark, richly polished boards that generations of worshipers have walked over since they were first laid. The east transept houses the Lady Chapel, whilst the west transept is consumed by the magnificent 1972 Roger H. Pogson organ built of cedar with tin piping. This replaced the original 1889 Alfred Fuller organ. Beautifully executed carved rood figures watch over the chancel from high, perhaps admiring the marble altar.
Albert Purchas, born in 1825 in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, was a prominent Nineteenth Century architect who achieved great success for himself in Melbourne. Born to parents Robert Whittlesey Purchas and Marianne Guyon, he migrated to Australia in 1851 to establish himself in the then quickly expanding city of Melbourne, where he set up a small architect's firm in Little Collins Street. He also offered surveying services. His first major building was constructing the mansion "Berkeley Hall" in St Kilda on Princes Street in 1854. The house still exists today. Two years after migrating, Albert designed the layout of the Melbourne General Cemetery in Carlton. It was the first "garden cemetery" in Victoria, and his curvilinear design is still in existence, unaltered, today. In 1854, Albert married Eliza Anne Sawyer (1825 - 1869) in St Kilda. The couple had ten children over their marriage, including a son, Robert, who followed in his father's footsteps as an architect. Albert's brother-in-law, Charles Sawyer joined him in the partnership of Purchas and Sawyer, which existed from 1856 until 1862 in Queens Street. The firm produced more than 140 houses, churches, offices and cemetery buildings including: the nave and transepts of Christ Church St Kilda between 1854 and 1857, "Glenara Homestead"in Bulla in 1857, the Melbourne Savings Bank on the corner of Flinders Lane and Market Street (now demolished) between 1857 and 1858, the Geelong branch of the Bank of Australasia in Malop Street between 1859 and 1860, and Beck's Imperial Hotel in Castlemaine in 1861. When the firm broke up, Albert returned to Little Collins Street, and the best known building he designed during this period was St. George's Presbyterian Church in East St Kilda between 1877 and 1880. The church's tall polychomatic brick bell tower is still a local landmark, even in the times of high rise architecture and development, and St, George's itself is said to be one of his most striking church designs. Socially, Albert was vice president of the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects for many years, before becoming president in 1887. He was also an inventor and philanthropist. Albert died in 1909 at his home in Kew, a wealthy widower and much loved father.
Christ Church, built almost on the corner of Glenlyon Road and Brunswick Street in Brunswick, is a picturesque slice of Italy in inner city Melbourne. With its elegant proportions, warm yellow stuccoed facade and stylish Romanesque campanile, the church would not look out of place sitting atop a rise in Tuscany, or being the centre of an old walled town. This idea is further enhanced when the single bell rings from the campanile, calling worshipers to prayer.
Christ Church has been constructed in a cruciform plan with a detached campanile. Although not originally intended as such, at its completion, the church became an excellent example of "Villa Rustica" architecture in Australia. Like other churches around the inner city during the boom and bust eras of the mid Nineteenth Century as Melbourne became an established city, the building was built in stages between 1857 and 1875 as money became available to extend and better what was already in existence. Christ Church was dedicated in 1857 when the nave, designed by architects Purchas and Swyer, was completed. The transepts, chancel and vestry were completed between 1863 and 1864 to the designs created by the architects' firm Smith and Watts. The Romanesque style campanile was also designed by Smith and Watts and it completed between 1870 and 1871. A third architect, Frederick Wyatt, was employed to design the apse which was completed in 1875.
Built in Italianate style with overture characteristics of classical Italian country house designs, Christ Church is one of the few examples of what has been coined "Villa Rustica" architecture in Victoria.
Slipping through the front door at the bottom of the campanile, the rich smell of incense from mass envelops visitors. As soon as the double doors which lead into the church proper close behind you, the church provides a quiet refuge from the busy intersection of Glenlyon Road and Brunswick Street outside, and it is quite easy to forget that cars and trams pass by just a few metres away. The house was built between 1713 and 1717 in the corner of an orchard belonging to the Downes family. Its first occupant was Rev George Andreas Ruperti, the pastor of St Mary's Lutheran church in the Savoy, London, who used it as his country home. He cared for the thousands of refugees from the Rhineland who arrived in London following a famine in 1708-9. They hoped to be able to reach America - with Ruperti's help many did, and some settled in the south of Ireland. Ruperti's lists of the refugees, which record their trades, have been invaluable to family historians. He was appointed to the Lutheran Church at St James's Palace in 1728 at a salary of £200 a year. After his death in 1731 his widow retained the House; the Hogarths bought it from his son in 1749.
According to the increased valuations in the parish rate books, the Hogarths extended it in 1750 and Mrs Hogarth added another single storey extension in 1769. It was the artist's country retreat from 1749 until his death in 1764; he had a "painting room" over his coach-house at the bottom of the garden. He shared it with his wife, mother-in-law, his wife's cousin, Mary Lewis (who assisted with his business) and his sister. His town house was in Leicester Square, and was demolished in 1870. William Hogarth is buried in the graveyard of the nearby St Nicholas' Church, Chiswick; his fine tomb-monument carries an obituary by his great friend, the actor David Garrick. The family's connections with the House continued until Mary Lewis' death in 1808.
From 1814 to 1833 the House belonged to Rev Henry Francis Cary, a poet and skillful translator of Dante's Divine Comedy. He came to Chiswick as Curate of St Nicholas' Church and went on to become Assistant Librarian at the British Museum. He was part of a circle of writers and poets, including Samuel Taylor Coleridge who promoted Cary's Dante translation and made it a best seller. The House was acquired in 1833 by the Wickstead family; they migrated to Australia in 1840 and left the House to tenants. In about 1867 it became home to Newton Treen Hicks ("Brayvo Hicks") a well-known melodramatic actor.(Wikipedia)
Studio portrait taken during one of Hugh McConnell's trips 'home' to Ireland. Davey Evans, who ran a hotel, was a long time friend of Hugh. They had kept in touch during the years since Hugh had emigrated to Australia with his parents and siblings on the 'Great Britain' in 1874.
Hugh and Mary Janet McConnell named their Kolora home 'Raloo'. It was a first port of call for several Irish connections who migrated to Australia including Nathaniel (Nat) McWilliam, John Craig and Alexander (Sandy) Sim (or Sims). It was their home for a time, before they found their feet.
Several members of the extended McConnell family made return visits to Ireland up to at least the early 1920s. They regularly corresponded with relatives and friends back 'home'.

Frederick Wilkinson (1901 - 1975) migrated to Australia from England in 1911. While working various jobs in and around central Sydney, Wilkinson acquired a camera and began taking photographs of vessels and harbour scenes. Many of his images were used by commercial photographers for souvenir postcards.

John Leak (1892?-1972), soldier, teamster and garage proprietor, was born probably in 1892 at Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, son of James Leak, miner. He migrated to Australia before World War I, becoming a teamster at Rockhampton, Queensland.
Leak enlisted as a private in the Australian Imperial Force on 28 January 1915 and embarked with the 5th Reinforcements for the 9th Battalion on the transport Kyarra, joining his unit on 22 June at Gallipoli. Early in 1916 the battalion was posted to the Western Front and disembarked at Marseilles bound for northern France to engage in the Somme offensive in July. The village of Pozières on the Amiens-Bapaume highway on a ridge overlooking the Somme was a vital objective of the allies and was taken after four days of savage fighting. The 1st Australian Division, flanked by British divisions, and with the 9th Battalion spearheading its attack, moved towards Pozières on 22 July. Next day Leak was one of a party ordered to capture a German strong-point which was holding up the battalion's advance. His party became pinned down in an old German trench by heavy machine-gun fire. Their grenades were outranged by the Germans' superior 'egg' bombs. Leak dashed from cover and, under heavy fire, ran towards the enemy post, hurling three grenades to great effect. On reaching the enemy trench he leapt in and bayoneted the three remaining Germans.
Later in this engagement his party was driven back. Leak was the last to withdraw at each stage, hurling bombs to cover his companions' retreat. By the time reinforcements arrived his courage and energy had done much to weaken the enemy's defence and the post was taken again. For 'conspicuous bravery' he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was wounded on 21 August 1916 at Mouquet Farm and rejoined the 9th Battalion on 15 October 1917. On 7 March 1918 he was severely gassed at Hollebeke, Belgium, and was unable to resume duty until 26 June. Late in life, he suffered from bronchitis and emphysema. He married Beatrice May Chapman on 30 December 1918 in the Parish Church of St John Baptist, Cardiff, Wales.
On 9 February 1919 Leak embarked for Australia and was discharged from the A.I.F. in Queensland on 31 May. After two years in Queensland he moved to New South Wales for two and a half years. Further moves took him to South Australia and then to Esperance in Western Australia where he became a mechanic and garage proprietor. He was married again on 19 January 1927 to Ada Victoria Bood-Smith. On retirement he settled at Crafers, South Australia. Survived by four sons and three daughters, he died at Redwood Park on 20 October 1972 and was buried in Stirling cemetery

Joseph Bell, the Chief Engineer on the RMS Titanic was born in Farlam, near Brampton, Cumbria.

Firstborn Son of John Bell, Sr. and Margaret Watson, both agricultural entrepreneurs, Joseph Bell grew up in Farlam, a small village belonging to the Rural District of Brampton, in the county of Cumberland; he had three siblings: Jane (1864), Richard (1865) and John jr. (1868).[1] His mother Margaret died shortly after giving birth to her last child.
Joseph Bell, initially, attended as a child a private elementary school in the village of Farlam and, after the death of his mother, he moved with his father and his brothers to Carlisle, between the districts of Edentown and Stanwix; Joseph and the brothers attended Carlisle's Academy William Harrison. In time, the younger brother John decided to migrate to Australia, embarking on the transatlantic SS Great Britain, while the rest of the family remained in Carlisle.
After leaving Carlisle, Joseph Bell moved to Newcastle, doing apprenticeship as an engine editor at Robert Stephenson and Company.[1] In 1885, Bell was hired by the White Star Line and worked on many ships that traded with New Zealand and the United States. In 1891 he was promoted to chief mechanical engineer.
Sister Jane married William Hugh Lowthian in 1886 and spent many years living in Ripley, Derbyshire, where he was a bank manager. It was probably at this time that Joseph met Maud Bates, whom he married in 1893; the couple had 4 children: Frances John, called Frank (1896), Marjorie Clare (1899), Eileen Maud (1901), and Ralph Douglas (1908).
In 1911, Joseph found lodging in Belfast, along with his wife and younger son. The two daughters remained at Ripley, cared for by both a housekeeper and her uncles (Bell's sister and brother-in-law), while the then fifteen-year-old Frank was studying at the Grosvenor College in Carlisle and later an apprenticeship at the Harland and Wolff shipyards.
On the Titanic
After serving on the Olympic, he transferred to the Titanic, where he was given the post of chief engineer. On the night of April 14, shortly before the Titanic hit an iceberg, Bell received an order from the bridge to either stop or reverse the engines (accounts vary), in an attempt to slow the ship. Despite the crew's best efforts, the Titanic could not avoid the immense block of ice. As the ship began to sink, Bell and the engineers remained in the engine room, urging the stokers and firemen to keep the boilers active, allowing the pumps to continue their work and ensuring the electricity remained on as long as possible. According to legend, Bell and his men worked to keep the lights and the power on in order for distress signals to get out and they all died in the bowels of the Titanic. However, according to the historical record, when it became obvious that nothing more could be done, and the flooding was too severe for the pumps to cope, they all came up onto Titanic's open well deck, but by this time all the lifeboats had already left. Greaser Frederick Scott testified to seeing all the engineers gathered at the aft end of the starboard Boat Deck at the end.[2][3] Bell's body was never recovered.
After Bell's death, the wife and the brother-in-law, William Ralph, inherited the farm of Farlam, of which Joseph had become its full owner since 1904, after his father's death; the farm was immediately sold because both Bell's wife and children never went to Farlam.
At the Church of the Holy Faith in Waterloo, near Liverpool, a plate has been affixed to commemorate Bell; an epitaph was also erected in his memory in the small cemetery of Farlam.

Channel-billed Cuckoo, Scythrops novaehollandiae
The Channel-billed Cuckoo migrates to Australia from New Guinea and Indonesia between August and October each year. They are commonly called the Storm Bird - perhaps because of their appearance during the summmer storm season.
Today’s specimen (UC 8030) is a Silurian (430-million year old) brachiopod (Eospirifer radiatus) from the Waldron Shale of Indiana. It has been sent to the University of Texas High-Resolution X-ray CT Facility where it will be CT scanned for a paleontology-imaging workshop that Paul Mayer will be attending in Austin. A CT scan or computed tomography scan is X-ray imaging in 3D; similar to a CAT scan. If everything works out, we will post what the inside of this specimen looks like sometime in mid-May.
The specimen measures 34 millimeters wide, 32 millimeters long, and 21 millimeters in height. The shell is calcite with a shale matrix and is extremely well-preserved with fine 0.2 mm ribbing easily visible. The specimen has a spot of epoxy or glue and cardboard on one shell, where it was fixed to a display board. The shell also has epibionts attached to it including two large colonies of encrusting bryozoans that lived on the shell when the specimen was still alive, plus smaller bryozoan colonies, Spirorbis, and a boring probably made by a sponge.
We hope the CT scan will be able to examine the jugal process and spiral brachidium--both are internal structures in brachiopods that support the lophophore (brachiopod feeding organ). In living brachiopods the lophophore is covered with small hairs (cilia) that move back and forth to generate a current. As water flows through the brachiopod the cilia traps any food particles and passes them to the brachiopod mouth. In this specimen the lophophore had a spiral-shape and was supported by a calcium carbonate structure called the brachidium. The spiral brachidium is supported and attached to the shell by two pillars called the jugal process.
Species of Eospirifer are the oldest recognized member of the order Spiriferida and originated in the Late Ordovician of China. During the Silurian they migrated to Australia then Europe and North America. The specimen being scanned is Eospirifer radiatus from Indiana and is slightly older than similar specimens from England and Sweden. The results might provide evidence that there are variations between specimens of Eospirifer radiatus in Sweden, England, and North America.
The results, either way, will be posted as an animation or interactive object on the all new Virtual Silurian Reef website (coming soon!), which is being completely revised as part of an IMLS Grant shared by the Milwaukee Public Museum and the Field Museum.

Joseph Bell, the Chief Engineer on the RMS Titanic was born in Farlam, near Brampton, Cumbria.

First years and training
Firstborn Son of John Bell, Sr. and Margaret Watson, both agricultural entrepreneurs, Joseph Bell grew up in Farlam, a small village belonging to the Rural District of Brampton, in the county of Cumberland; he had three siblings: Jane (1864), Richard (1865) and John jr. (1868).[1] His mother Margaret died shortly after giving birth to her last child.
Joseph Bell, initially, attended as a child a private elementary school in the village of Farlam and, after the death of his mother, he moved with his father and his brothers to Carlisle, between the districts of Edentown and Stanwix; Joseph and the brothers attended Carlisle's Academy William Harrison. In time, the younger brother John decided to migrate to Australia, embarking on the transatlantic SS Great Britain, while the rest of the family remained in Carlisle.
After leaving Carlisle, Joseph Bell moved to Newcastle, doing apprenticeship as an engine editor at Robert Stephenson and Company.[1] In 1885, Bell was hired by the White Star Line and worked on many ships that traded with New Zealand and the United States. In 1891 he was promoted to chief mechanical engineer.
Sister Jane married William Hugh Lowthian in 1886 and spent many years living in Ripley, Derbyshire, where he was a bank manager. It was probably at this time that Joseph met Maud Bates, whom he married in 1893; the couple had 4 children: Frances John, called Frank (1896), Marjorie Clare (1899), Eileen Maud (1901), and Ralph Douglas (1908).
In 1911, Joseph found lodging in Belfast, along with his wife and younger son. The two daughters remained at Ripley, cared for by both a housekeeper and her uncles (Bell's sister and brother-in-law), while the then fifteen-year-old Frank was studying at the Grosvenor College in Carlisle and later an apprenticeship at the Harland and Wolff shipyards.
On the Titanic
After serving on the Olympic, he transferred to the Titanic, where he was given the post of chief engineer. On the night of April 14, shortly before the Titanic hit an iceberg, Bell received an order from the bridge to either stop or reverse the engines (accounts vary), in an attempt to slow the ship. Despite the crew's best efforts, the Titanic could not avoid the immense block of ice. As the ship began to sink, Bell and the engineers remained in the engine room, urging the stokers and firemen to keep the boilers active, allowing the pumps to continue their work and ensuring the electricity remained on as long as possible. According to legend, Bell and his men worked to keep the lights and the power on in order for distress signals to get out and they all died in the bowels of the Titanic. However, according to the historical record, when it became obvious that nothing more could be done, and the flooding was too severe for the pumps to cope, they all came up onto Titanic's open well deck, but by this time all the lifeboats had already left. Christ Church, built almost on the corner of Glenlyon Road and Brunswick Street in Brunswick, is a picturesque slice of Italy in inner city Melbourne. With its elegant proportions, warm yellow stuccoed facade and stylish Romanesque campanile, the church would not look out of place sitting atop a rise in Tuscany, or being the centre of an old walled town. This idea is further enhanced when the single bell rings from the campanile, calling worshipers to prayer.
Christ Church has been constructed in a cruciform plan with a detached campanile. Although not originally intended as such, at its completion, the church became an excellent example of "Villa Rustica" architecture in Australia. Like other churches around the inner city during the boom and bust eras of the mid Nineteenth Century as Melbourne became an established city, the building was built in stages between 1857 and 1875 as money became available to extend and better what was already in existence. Christ Church was dedicated in 1857 when the nave, designed by architects Purchas and Swyer, was completed. The transepts, chancel and vestry were completed between 1863 and 1864 to the designs created by the architects' firm Smith and Watts. The Romanesque style campanile was also designed by Smith and Watts and it completed between 1870 and 1871. A third architect, Frederick Wyatt, was employed to design the apse which was completed in 1875.
Built in Italianate style with overture characteristics of classical Italian country house designs, Christ Church is one of the few examples of what has been coined "Villa Rustica" architecture in Victoria.
Slipping through the front door at the bottom of the campanile, the rich smell of incense from mass envelops visitors. As soon as the double doors which lead into the church proper close behind you, the church provides a quiet refuge from the busy intersection of Glenlyon Road and Brunswick Street outside, and it is quite easy to forget that cars and trams pass by just a few metres away. Walking up the aisle of the nave of Christ Church, light pours over the original wooden pews with their hand embroidered cushions through sets of luminescent stained glass windows by Melbourne manufacturers, Ferguson and Urie, Mathieson and Gibson and Brooks Robinson and Company. A set of fourteen windows from the mid-to-late Nineteenth Century by Ferguson and Urie depicting different saints are especially beautiful, filled with painted glass panes which are as vivid now as when they were created more than one hundred years ago. The floors are still the original dark, richly polished boards that generations of worshipers have walked over since they were first laid. The east transept houses the Lady Chapel, whilst the west transept is consumed by the magnificent 1972 Roger H. Pogson organ built of cedar with tin piping. This replaced the original 1889 Alfred Fuller organ. Beautifully executed carved rood figures watch over the chancel from high, perhaps admiring the marble altar.
Albert Purchas, born in 1825 in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, was a prominent Nineteenth Century architect who achieved great success for himself in Melbourne. Born to parents Robert Whittlesey Purchas and Marianne Guyon, he migrated to Australia in 1851 to establish himself in the then quickly expanding city of Melbourne, where he set up a small architect's firm in Little Collins Street. He also offered surveying services. His first major building was constructing the mansion "Berkeley Hall" in St Kilda on Princes Street in 1854. The house still exists today. Two years after migrating, Albert designed the layout of the Melbourne General Cemetery in Carlton. It was the first "garden cemetery" in Victoria, and his curvilinear design is still in existence, unaltered, today. In 1854, Albert married Eliza Anne Sawyer (1825 - 1869) in St Kilda. The couple had ten children over their marriage, including a son, Robert, who followed in his father's footsteps as an architect. Albert's brother-in-law, Charles Sawyer joined him in the partnership of Purchas and Sawyer, which existed from 1856 until 1862 in Queens Street. The firm produced more than 140 houses, churches, offices and cemetery buildings including: the nave and transepts of Christ Church St Kilda between 1854 and 1857, "Glenara Homestead"in Bulla in 1857, the Melbourne Savings Bank on the corner of Flinders Lane and Market Street (now demolished) between 1857 and 1858, the Geelong branch of the Bank of Australasia in Malop Street between 1859 and 1860, and Beck's Imperial Hotel in Castlemaine in 1861. When the firm broke up, Albert returned to Little Collins Street, and the best known building he designed during this period was St. George's Presbyterian Church in East St Kilda between 1877 and 1880. The church's tall polychomatic brick bell tower is still a local landmark, even in the times of high rise architecture and development, and St, George's itself is said to be one of his most striking church designs. Socially, Albert was vice president of the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects for many years, before becoming president in 1887. He was also an inventor and philanthropist. Albert died in 1909 at his home in Kew, a wealthy widower and much loved father.
My parents migrated to Australia in 1955 in the post war era when Australia was desperate for additional people for the workforce.
The Orontes was a member of the Orient Line, and was doing migration shuttles in the 1950s. The ship was made into razor blades in 1962.
On the day the ship crossed the Equator heading towards the continent referred to as "Down Under" each cabin was issued with a certificate of crossing.

The crossings over the Indian Ocean were notorious for seasickness which would have reduced the amount of food consumed.

OMAR previously KONIGIN LUISE, is shown at Orient Wharf in Sydney Harbour. OMAR was purchased by the Orient Line in 1920 and the vessel made its first trip to Australia for the company on 4 September 1920.

John Leak (1892?-1972), soldier, teamster and garage proprietor, was born probably in 1892 at Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, son of James Leak, miner. He migrated to Australia before World War I, becoming a teamster at Rockhampton, Queensland.
Leak enlisted as a private in the Australian Imperial Force on 28 January 1915 and embarked with the 5th Reinforcements for the 9th Battalion on the transport Kyarra, joining his unit on 22 June at Gallipoli. Early in 1916 the battalion was posted to the Western Front and disembarked at Marseilles bound for northern France to engage in the Somme offensive in July. The village of Pozières on the Amiens-Bapaume highway on a ridge overlooking the Somme was a vital objective of the allies and was taken after four days of savage fighting. The 1st Australian Division, flanked by British divisions, and with the 9th Battalion spearheading its attack, moved towards Pozières on 22 July. Next day Leak was one of a party ordered to capture a German strong-point which was holding up the battalion's advance. His party became pinned down in an old German trench by heavy machine-gun fire. Their grenades were outranged by the Germans' superior 'egg' bombs. Leak dashed from cover and, under heavy fire, ran towards the enemy post, hurling three grenades to great effect. On reaching the enemy trench he leapt in and bayoneted the three remaining Germans.
Later in this engagement his party was driven back. Leak was the last to withdraw at each stage, hurling bombs to cover his companions' retreat. By the time reinforcements arrived his courage and energy had done much to weaken the enemy's defence and the post was taken again. For 'conspicuous bravery' he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was wounded on 21 August 1916 at Mouquet Farm and rejoined the 9th Battalion on 15 October 1917. On 7 March 1918 he was severely gassed at Hollebeke, Belgium, and was unable to resume duty until 26 June. Late in life, he suffered from bronchitis and emphysema. He married Beatrice May Chapman on 30 December 1918 in the Parish Church of St John Baptist, Cardiff, Wales.
On 9 February 1919 Leak embarked for Australia and was discharged from the A.I.F. in Queensland on 31 May. After two years in Queensland he moved to New South Wales for two and a half years. Further moves took him to South Australia and then to Esperance in Western Australia where he became a mechanic and garage proprietor. He was married again on 19 January 1927 to Ada Victoria Bood-Smith. On retirement he settled at Crafers, South Australia. Survived by four sons and three daughters, he died at Redwood Park on 20 October 1972 and was buried in Stirling cemetery
SS PORT ALBANY was photographed as it was about to leave Pyrmont wharf for the United Kingdom, on Saturday 4 November 1923. PORT ALBANY was under the management of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line which was specifically established to operate services from Britain to Australia and New Zealand.
SS PORT ALBANY was a 5,714 ton vessel built in 1914, the first of three vessels to bear the name Port Albany. It operated for the Commonwealth and Dominion Line on the trade route between Australia and London, Britain. In 1929 it was sold to Union Cold Storage Ltd and renamed OREGON STAR.It was scrapped in 1934.

Created in 1876 by Melbourne stained glass manufacturer Ferguson and Urie, the Edward Whitby memorial stained glass window may be found in the eastern wall of the nave of Christ Church Brunswick. It depicts the parable of the Good Samaritan. The parable of the Good Samaritan is a parable told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. It is about a traveller who is stripped of his clothing, beaten, and left half dead alongside the road by robbers. First a priest and then a Levite comes by, but both avoid the man. Finally, a Samaritan happens upon the traveler and helps the injured man. The window depicts the Samaritan cleaning the injured man's wounds with water from his flask. The Samaritan has already been at work binding up the traveller's wounds. A flask of oil sits next to his stick. The donkey on which the Samaritan will eventually carry the wounded traveller to an inn stands in the mid-ground, whist the priest in his robes and with his face buried in his holy book can be seen walking away in the background. The words "Go and do thou likewise" are written in gothic script beneath the main panel.
Mr. Edward Whitby was not only a member of Christ Church Brunswick, but a local Justice of the Peace and a wealthy merchant who believed in philanthropy and charity. The choice of the parable of the Good Samaritan was not chosen without thought. The dedication reads: "In memory of Edward Whitby J.P. who died 23rd of June 1876. Placed by the Victorian Society of Blues." The Society of Blues crest is depicted above. The North Melbourne Advertiser of Friday 7th of July 1876 gives us an insight into Edward Whitby's life: "Death of Mr. Whitby, Brunswick. Another of our old residents has been removed by death - the late Edward Whitby, Esq., J.P., of Whitby field. He was held in high respect by most of his neighbours. His modest and kindly nature, united with considerable culture, and his unasssumed Christian deportment, invested his character with rare interest. As a Melbourne merchant, his business was conducted with the utmost integrity. He was true disciple of the English Church. He was a native of London, and educated at the Blue Coat School, and many years he took pride managing the Victorian chapter of the Society of Blues, with the object of assisting the poor and unfortunate who had been members in that institution. His end was peace."
The Society of Blues still exists today as the Benevolent Society of Blues. The Benevolent Society of Blues (BSB) provides benefits for those educated or employed at Christ's Hospital and those closest to them who are in need, hardship and distress.

The stained glass firm of Ferguson and Urie was established by Scots James Ferguson (1818 – 1894), James Urie (1828 – 1890) and John Lamb Lyon (1836 – 1916). They were the first known makers of stained glass in Australia. Until the early 1860s, window glass in Melbourne had been clear or plain coloured, and nearly all was imported, but new churches and elaborate buildings created a demand for pictorial windows. The three Scotsmen set up Ferguson and Urie in 1862 and the business thrived until 1899, when it ceased operation, with only John Lamb Lyon left alive. Ferguson and Urie was the most successful Nineteenth Century Australian stained glass window making company. Among their earliest works were a Shakespeare window for the Haymarket Theatre in Bourke Street, a memorial window to Prince Albert in Holy Trinity, Kew, and a set of Apostles for the West Melbourne Presbyterian Church. Their palatial Gothic Revival office building stood at 283 Collins Street from 1875. Ironically, their last major commission, a window depicting “labour”, was installed in the old Melbourne Stock Exchange in Collins Street in 1893 on the eve of the bank crash. Their windows can be found throughout the older suburbs of Melbourne and across provincial Victoria.
SS ILLINGWORTH is shown in Snails Bay, Balmain on Saturday afternoon, 15 March 1924. ILLINGWORTH was under the British owner R S Dalgliesh and operated as a cargo vessel between Australia and Britain.

Description: M.U.I.O.O.F. entry in New Year's Procession.
Barcaldine is a town in the central west of Queensland 108kms east of Longreach. It is situated on Lagoon Creek and is the centre of a pastoral area devoted to the production of sheep and some beef cattle. There is good supply of artesian water and the town's wide streets are lined with flowering shade trees. Barcaldine is known as the Garden City of the West. The town takes its name from Barcaldine Downs Station, which was named by Donald Charles Cameron, a pioneer pastoralist who had stayed with family in Barcaldine, Ayrshire before migrating to Australia.
Barcaldine figured prominently in the 1891 shearers' strike, when 400 shearers camped on the fringes of the town for several months protesting the use of non-union labour. The strike gave birth to the political Labor movement. In the following year Thomas Ryan, a member of the state committee, became the first endorsed Labor candidate in the Australian parliament. Today I went to Sydney for my Grandma's 104th birthday. Strictly speaking, the photo on the left of Grandma cutting her cake is my pic of the day because I took that - my sister shot the one on the right with me and Grandma but I've paired it because, well, I wanted to.
Grandma has featured in my 365 projects in the past - and the way Grandma is going I'm sure she'll be in my 365 project in 2017 celebrating another birthday.
She gave a speech in which she said the important thing in life is keeping your family close - and the secret to living to 104 is to avoid strong drink (my Grandma has always been a teetotaller).
She migrated to Australia from England as a young girl, lived through the depression and two world wars, raised her children, had a marriage that lasted more than 70 years, and is always up for a chat - always.
Happy Birthday Grandma.
As an aside, given my Grandma is 104, I figure at 47 I'm not even middle aged.

Slipping through the front door at the bottom of the campanile, the rich smell of incense from mass envelops visitors. As soon as the double doors which lead into the church proper close behind you, the church provides a quiet refuge from the busy intersection of Glenlyon Road and Brunswick Street outside, and it is quite easy to forget that cars and trams pass by just a few metres away. Walking up the aisle of the nave of Christ Church, light pours over the original wooden pews with their hand embroidered cushions through sets of luminescent stained glass windows by Melbourne manufacturers, Ferguson and Urie, Mathieson and Gibson and Brooks Robinson and Company. A set of fourteen windows from the mid-to-late Nineteenth Century by Ferguson and Urie depicting different saints are especially beautiful, filled with painted glass panes which are as vivid now as when they were created more than one hundred years ago. The floors are still the original dark, richly polished boards that generations of worshipers have walked over since they were first laid. The east transept houses the Lady Chapel, whilst the west transept is consumed by the magnificent 1972 Roger H. Pogson organ built of cedar with tin piping. This replaced the original 1889 Alfred Fuller organ. Beautifully executed carved rood figures watch over the chancel from high, perhaps admiring the marble altar.
Albert Purchas, born in 1825 in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, was a prominent Nineteenth Century architect who achieved great success for himself in Melbourne. Born to parents Robert Whittlesey Purchas and Marianne Guyon, he migrated to Australia in 1851 to establish himself in the then quickly expanding city of Melbourne, where he set up a small architect's firm in Little Collins Street. He also offered surveying services. His first major building was constructing the mansion "Berkeley Hall" in St Kilda on Princes Street in 1854. The house still exists today. Two years after migrating, Albert designed the layout of the Melbourne General Cemetery in Carlton. It was the first "garden cemetery" in Victoria, and his curvilinear design is still in existence, unaltered, today. In 1854, Albert married Eliza Anne Sawyer (1825 - 1869) in St Kilda. The couple had ten children over their marriage, including a son, Robert, who followed in his father's footsteps as an architect. Albert's brother-in-law, Charles Sawyer joined him in the partnership of Purchas and Sawyer, which existed from 1856 until 1862 in Queens Street. The firm produced more than 140 houses, churches, offices and cemetery buildings including: the nave and transepts of Christ Church St Kilda between 1854 and 1857, "Glenara Homestead"in Bulla in 1857, the Melbourne Savings Bank on the corner of Flinders Lane and Market Street (now demolished) between 1857 and 1858, the Geelong branch of the Bank of Australasia in Malop Street between 1859 and 1860, and Beck's Imperial Hotel in Castlemaine in 1861. When the firm broke up, Albert returned to Little Collins Street, and the best known building he designed during this period was St. George's Presbyterian Church in East St Kilda between 1877 and 1880. The church's tall polychomatic brick bell tower is still a local landmark, even in the times of high rise architecture and development, and St, George's itself is said to be one of his most striking church designs. Socially, Albert was vice president of the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects for many years, before becoming president in 1887. He was also an inventor and philanthropist. Albert died in 1909 at his home in Kew, a wealthy widower and much loved father.

Mungerannie is just 50km short of being half way along the Birdsville Track.
Mungerannie wetland is an important watering point and refuge area for birds, and stock, especially during times of drought and provides a habitat for 147 species of birds.
The wetland is home to several uncommon wading birds, some of which migrate to Australia from northern Asia during the winter months. Other birds which spend the summer months in South Eastern S.A. spend the winter months in the area. Several species , such as the Brolga, are dependent on the region's bore drain wetlands.
With the replacement of open bore drains with closed systems, bore drain wetlands such as the Mungerannie wetland are being evaluated to determine their importance. Those of high importance will be maintained by an allocation of flow and managed by the local community.
John Leak (1892?-1972), soldier, teamster and garage proprietor, was born probably in 1892 at Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, son of James Leak, miner. He migrated to Australia before World War I, becoming a teamster at Rockhampton, Queensland.
Leak enlisted as a private in the Australian Imperial Force on 28 January 1915 and embarked with the 5th Reinforcements for the 9th Battalion on the transport Kyarra, joining his unit on 22 June at Gallipoli. Early in 1916 the battalion was posted to the Western Front and disembarked at Marseilles bound for northern France to engage in the Somme offensive in July. The village of Pozières on the Amiens-Bapaume highway on a ridge overlooking the Somme was a vital objective of the allies and was taken after four days of savage fighting. The 1st Australian Division, flanked by British divisions, and with the 9th Battalion spearheading its attack, moved towards Pozières on 22 July. Next day Leak was one of a party ordered to capture a German strong-point which was holding up the battalion's advance. His party became pinned down in an old German trench by heavy machine-gun fire. Their grenades were outranged by the Germans' superior 'egg' bombs. Leak dashed from cover and, under heavy fire, ran towards the enemy post, hurling three grenades to great effect. On reaching the enemy trench he leapt in and bayoneted the three remaining Germans.
Later in this engagement his party was driven back. Leak was the last to withdraw at each stage, hurling bombs to cover his companions' retreat. By the time reinforcements arrived his courage and energy had done much to weaken the enemy's defence and the post was taken again. For 'conspicuous bravery' he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was wounded on 21 August 1916 at Mouquet Farm and rejoined the 9th Battalion on 15 October 1917. On 7 March 1918 he was severely gassed at Hollebeke, Belgium, and was unable to resume duty until 26 June. Late in life, he suffered from bronchitis and emphysema. He married Beatrice May Chapman on 30 December 1918 in the Parish Church of St John Baptist, Cardiff, Wales.
On 9 February 1919 Leak embarked for Australia and was discharged from the A.I.F. in Queensland on 31 May. After two years in Queensland he moved to New South Wales for two and a half years. Further moves took him to South Australia and then to Esperance in Western Australia where he became a mechanic and garage proprietor. He was married again on 19 January 1927 to Ada Victoria Bood-Smith. On retirement he settled at Crafers, South Australia. Survived by four sons and three daughters, he died at Redwood Park on 20 October 1972 and was buried in Stirling cemetery

In connection with the layout of the Galway Garden Suburb at Richmond, where the State Bank proposes to erect a colony of houses for the soldiers, a proposal has been made that the principal thoroughfares should be named after the Ministers of the present Government, mainly as an appreciation of the fact that it was during their regime that it was decided to establish the first model village in South Australia.
The proposal will be submitted for the consideration of Ministers, and in the event of their agreeing to the idea the central portion of the scheme will be named Peake Gardens, there will be an Anstey Crescent, and a Barwell Avenue, and other streets will be called after Messrs Bice, Ritchie, and Harvey.
Archibald Henry Peake was a politician who was Premier of South Australia on three occasions: 1909 to 1910 for the Liberal and Democratic Union, 1912 to 1915 and 1917 to 1920 for the Liberal Union. He was a member of the South Australian House of Assembly 1897 – 1920. [Ref: The Mail 29-11-1919]

Mr Peake migrated to Australia in 1862 As a youth he entered the service of the District Council of Naracoorte and was later to become District Clerk, a position he held for 19 years until his resignation in 1897 to enter politics. The Peake Gardens Reserve was originally created in a subdivision by the State Bank of South Australia in 1921, and in 1927 the land was transferred to the Council at no cost, a condition of the transfer being that it would be permanently retained as a recreation ground for all time.
On 27th March 1930 a Public Meeting was held for the purpose of nominating trustees to manage and control the reserve, and at a meeting of Council on 12th May 1930, a Trust was appointed, the first Trustees being – Messrs G D Anderson, H B Danielson, C B Claxton, W L Mates, S E Hutchins, H H Walker, A J Wiltshire and Councillor S G Schmidt. The Trust was appointed for a term of 5 years and at the expiration of that time was subsequently terminated on 19th March 1935, when Council resumed control of the Reserve.
On 22nd October, 1951, a further Public Meeting was held to again consider the formation of a Trust to manage the Reserve, and on 1st January, 1952, a new Trust was appointed. Playground equipment was first installed on the Reserve in 1952 and on 28th October, 1954, the Kurralta Park Pre-School Kindergarten was officially opened. The initial development of the Reserve comprised the construction of 3 tennis courts in 1930, with the remainder of the land being used as a cricket ground. Since that time, however, the Reserve has been developed to the extent that it is now used almost exclusively for tennis, with 14 tennis courts under lease to the Peake Gardens Riverside Tennis Club.

As it turned out Gino did. He was up in Sydney for the day as his niece was visiting from Mauritius so he was playing host for the day.
Gino is also from Mauritius & migrated to Australia 6 years ago. He lives in Melbourne.

Christ Church, built almost on the corner of Glenlyon Road and Brunswick Street in Brunswick, is a picturesque slice of Italy in inner city Melbourne. With its elegant proportions, warm yellow stuccoed facade and stylish Romanesque campanile, the church would not look out of place sitting atop a rise in Tuscany, or being the centre of an old walled town. This idea is further enhanced when the single bell rings from the campanile, calling worshipers to prayer.

Although not originally intended as such, at its completion, the church became an excellent example of "Villa Rustica" architecture in Australia. Joseph Bell, the Chief Engineer on the RMS Titanic was born in Farlam, near Brampton, Cumbria.

First years and training
Firstborn Son of John Bell, Sr. and Margaret Watson, both agricultural entrepreneurs, Joseph Bell grew up in Farlam, a small village belonging to the Rural District of Brampton, in the county of Cumberland; he had three siblings: Jane (1864), Richard (1865) and John jr. (1868).[1] His mother Margaret died shortly after giving birth to her last child.
Joseph Bell, initially, attended as a child a private elementary school in the village of Farlam and, after the death of his mother, he moved with his father and his brothers to Carlisle, between the districts of Edentown and Stanwix; Joseph and the brothers attended Carlisle's Academy William Harrison. In time, the younger brother John decided to migrate to Australia, embarking on the transatlantic SS Great Britain, while the rest of the family remained in Carlisle.
After leaving Carlisle, Joseph Bell moved to Newcastle, doing apprenticeship as an engine editor at Robert Stephenson and Company.[1] In 1885, Bell was hired by the White Star Line and worked on many ships that traded with New Zealand and the United States. In 1891 he was promoted to chief mechanical engineer.
Sister Jane married William Hugh Lowthian in 1886 and spent many years living in Ripley, Derbyshire, where he was a bank manager. It was probably at this time that Joseph met Maud Bates, whom he married in 1893; the couple had 4 children: Frances John, called Frank (1896), Marjorie Clare (1899), Eileen Maud (1901), and Ralph Douglas (1908).
In 1911, Joseph found lodging in Belfast, along with his wife and younger son. The two daughters remained at Ripley, cared for by both a housekeeper and her uncles (Bell's sister and brother-in-law), while the then fifteen-year-old Frank was studying at the Grosvenor College in Carlisle and later an apprenticeship at the Harland and Wolff shipyards.
On the Titanic
After serving on the Olympic, he transferred to the Titanic, where he was given the post of chief engineer. On the night of April 14, shortly before the Titanic hit an iceberg, Bell received an order from the bridge to either stop or reverse the engines (accounts vary), in an attempt to slow the ship. Despite the crew's best efforts, the Titanic could not avoid the immense block of ice. As the ship began to sink, Bell and the engineers remained in the engine room, urging the stokers and firemen to keep the boilers active, allowing the pumps to continue their work and ensuring the electricity remained on as long as possible. According to legend, Bell and his men worked to keep the lights and the power on in order for distress signals to get out and they all died in the bowels of the Titanic. However, according to the historical record, when it became obvious that nothing more could be done, and the flooding was too severe for the pumps to cope, they all came up onto Titanic's open well deck, but by this time all the lifeboats had already left. Greaser Frederick Scott testified to seeing all the engineers gathered at the aft end of the starboard Boat Deck at the end.[2][3] Bell's body was never recovered.
After Bell's death, the wife and the brother-in-law, William Ralph, inherited the farm of Farlam, of which Joseph had become its full owner since 1904, after his father's death; the farm was immediately sold because both Bell's wife and children never went to Farlam.
At the Church of the Holy Faith in Waterloo, near Liverpool, a plate has been affixed to commemorate Bell; an epitaph was also erected in his memory in the small cemetery of Farlam.

Albert Purchas, born in 1825 in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, was a prominent Nineteenth Century architect who achieved great success for himself in Melbourne. Born to parents Robert Whittlesey Purchas and Marianne Guyon, he migrated to Australia in 1851 to establish himself in the then quickly expanding city of Melbourne, where he set up a small architect's firm in Little Collins Street. He also offered surveying services. His first major building was constructing the mansion "Berkeley Hall" in St Kilda on Princes Street in 1854. The house still exists today. Two years after migrating, Albert designed the layout of the Melbourne General Cemetery in Carlton. It was the first "garden cemetery" in Victoria, and his curvilinear design is still in existence, unaltered, today. In 1854, Albert married Eliza Anne Sawyer (1825 - 1869) in St Kilda. The couple had ten children over their marriage, including a son, Robert, who followed in his father's footsteps as an architect. Albert's brother-in-law, Charles Sawyer joined him in the partnership of Purchas and Sawyer, which existed from 1856 until 1862 in Queens Street. The firm produced more than 140 houses, churches, offices and cemetery buildings including: the nave and transepts of Christ Church St Kilda between 1854 and 1857, "Glenara Homestead"in Bulla in 1857, the Melbourne Savings Bank on the corner of Flinders Lane and Market Street (now demolished) between 1857 and 1858, the Geelong branch of the Bank of Australasia in Malop Street between 1859 and 1860, and Beck's Imperial Hotel in Castlemaine in 1861. When the firm broke up, Albert returned to Little Collins Street, and the best known building he designed during this period was St. George's Presbyterian Church in East St Kilda between 1877 and 1880. The church's tall polychomatic brick bell tower is still a local landmark, even in the times of high rise architecture and development, and St, George's itself is said to be one of his most striking church designs. Socially, Albert was vice president of the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects for many years, before becoming president in 1887. He was also an inventor and philanthropist. Albert died in 1909 at his home in Kew, a wealthy widower and much loved father.

Sister Jane married William Hugh Lowthian in 1886 and spent many years living in Ripley, Derbyshire, where he was a bank manager. It was probably at this time that Joseph met Maud Bates, whom he married in 1893; the couple had 4 children: Frances John, called Frank (1896), Marjorie Clare (1899), Eileen Maud (1901), and Ralph Douglas (1908).
In 1911, Joseph found lodging in Belfast, along with his wife and younger son. The two daughters remained at Ripley, cared for by both a housekeeper and her uncles (Bell's sister and brother-in-law), while the then fifteen-year-old Frank was studying at the Grosvenor College in Carlisle and later an apprenticeship at the Harland and Wolff shipyards.
On the Titanic
After serving on the Olympic, he transferred to the Titanic, where he was given the post of chief engineer. On the night of April 14, shortly before the Titanic hit an iceberg, Bell received an order from the bridge to either stop or reverse the engines (accounts vary), in an attempt to slow the ship. Despite the crew's best efforts, the Titanic could not avoid the immense block of ice. As the ship began to sink, Bell and the engineers remained in the engine room, urging the stokers and firemen to keep the boilers active, allowing the pumps to continue their work and ensuring the electricity remained on as long as possible. According to legend, Bell and his men worked to keep the lights and the power on in order for distress signals to get out and they all died in the bowels of the Titanic. However, according to the historical record, when it became obvious that nothing more could be done, and the flooding was too severe for the pumps to cope, they all came up onto Titanic's open well deck, but by this time all the lifeboats had already left. Greaser Frederick Scott testified to seeing all the engineers gathered at the aft end of the starboard Boat Deck at the end.[2][3] Bell's body was never recovered.
After Bell's death, the wife and the brother-in-law, William Ralph, inherited the farm of Farlam, of which Joseph had become its full owner since 1904, after his father's death; the farm was immediately sold because both Bell's wife and children never went to Farlam.
At the Church of the Holy Faith in Waterloo, near Liverpool, a plate has been affixed to commemorate Bell; an epitaph was also erected in his memory in the small cemetery of Farlam.

Christ Church, built almost on the corner of Glenlyon Road and Brunswick Street in Brunswick, is a picturesque slice of Italy in inner city Melbourne. With its elegant proportions, warm yellow stuccoed facade and stylish Romanesque campanile, the church would not look out of place sitting atop a rise in Tuscany, or being the centre of an old walled town. This idea is further enhanced when the single bell rings from the campanile, calling worshipers to prayer.
Christ Church has been constructed in a cruciform plan with a detached campanile. Although not originally intended as such, at its completion, the church became an excellent example of "Villa Rustica" architecture in Australia. Like other churches around the inner city during the boom and bust eras of the mid Nineteenth Century as Melbourne became an established city, the building was built in stages between 1857 and 1875 as money became available to extend and better what was already in existence. Christ Church was dedicated in 1857 when the nave, designed by architects Purchas and Swyer, was completed. The transepts, chancel and vestry were completed between 1863 and 1864 to the designs created by the architects' firm Smith and Watts. The Romanesque style campanile was also designed by Smith and Watts and it completed between 1870 and 1871. A third architect, Frederick Wyatt, was employed to design the apse which was completed in 1875.
Built in Italianate style with overture characteristics of classical Italian country house designs, Christ Church is one of the few examples of what has been coined "Villa Rustica" architecture in Victoria.
Slipping through the front door at the bottom of the campanile, the rich smell of incense from mass envelops visitors. As soon as the double doors which lead into the church proper close behind you, the church provides a quiet refuge from the busy intersection of Glenlyon Road and Brunswick Street outside, and it is quite easy to forget that cars and trams pass by just a few metres away. Walking up the aisle of the nave of Christ Church, light pours over the original wooden pews with their hand embroidered cushions through sets of luminescent stained glass windows by Melbourne manufacturers, Ferguson and Urie, Mathieson and Gibson and Brooks Robinson and Company. A set of fourteen windows from the mid-to-late Nineteenth Century by Ferguson and Urie depicting different saints are especially beautiful, filled with painted glass panes which are as vivid now as when they were created more than one hundred years ago. The floors are still the original dark, richly polished boards that generations of worshipers have walked over since they were first laid. The east transept houses the Lady Chapel, whilst the west transept is consumed by the magnificent 1972 Roger H. Pogson organ built of cedar with tin piping.
