The centre of the island is generally referred to as the Midlands. This slice of it is the view west from around Oatlands.

The area lies in rain shadows from all major wind directions and during most summers, the sheep pastures are bare, dusty and barren. Clouds form and threaten and hope springs like a break in air raids. But nothing much ever falls except bitter rue. The hazy low-contrast light is usually however, pretty good.

Today we take a monochromatic look at some of the wonderful old buildings in Ross, in Tasmania's Midlands. Ross is one of the premier historic tourist towns in Tasmania, and this interactive map will give you a wonderful feeling for the place as we continue our virtual tour.

On this interactive map you'll find this stylish Georgian building at 23 - The Scotch Thistle Inn. It was built in the 1830s and licensed as a coaching inn in 1840. It is now a very impressive private residence.

Made late by an horrendous journey from Daneway Banks in Gloucestershire (nearly three hours for forty line-of-sight miles!), I had limited time to conduct a search for my two targets; this species and the Downy Emerald dragonfly. No joy on the latter (despite plenty of ready meals of biting insects), but after lots of trudging and scanning, and with time running out before local sunset, I finally spotted the orange of this individual having a last bask. And just as I started photography . . . the wind picked up, blowing the grasses all around. So no opportunity for a highly detailed portrait, just a record of a breezy first encounter with this attractive butterfly.

The long journey home to the Midlands was a stinker, too. After 21 hours on the go I felt I could say it was a good but tough day.

These rapeseed fields in spring in the midlands of Great Britian must be what Sting was refering too in his famous pop song. The lemon color bloom combined with blue skies and narrow byways are a painter's and photographers dream. Vincent Van Gogh would have enjoyed this area as much as southern France. I was lucky to be here years ago at the peak of spring. The crop is used to make canola oil and other products. I was also not used to the new pollens so I got a raging sinus infection. That is gone but memories and images are still with me. This is in the area near Durham and Darlington in the countryside of United Kingdom..

As it happened, I caught the very tail end of Scania Omnicity operation by Arriva Derby and photographed one of the last examples in service. Not that it matters too much, seeing as I photted the very same bus in spring anyway, but here’s 3552 passing Derby railway station on 16.7.25

Although suffering from mismatched panels the Arriva Max-style livery still looks excellent, and you can’t knock the Omnicity exterior styling for looks. Overall they didn’t do too badly for seventeen years. Plus, despite not being an OmniCITY, there’s now an ex-Derby Arriva Omnilink preserved down in the West Midlands... possibly the first preserved Omnilink in the country?

Arriva Midlands 4458 (YX17 NEF) turns up at Rugby with an X84 service from Leicester. The first time I have photographed this bus here, but I did get a few photos of it when new around Strood when it was running as Arriva Southern Counties 6518.

Befdore I photographed this bus, a HUGE dollop of green bird crap (it looked like pesto) fell onto my arm. I thought that might be a sign of good luck, but the opposite was true. In my short session in Rugby, I got bowled by a very slow elderly person (even slower than Ryan) I thne had a shot I had lined up buggered by a delivery lorry which pulled up right in front of me. I then had to move to a less preferable spot, but the same then happened with a delivery van!!!. I eventually made it back to my intended spot, only to get bowled by a lady with a tartan shopping trolley! The next targeted bus was done by a cloud, when it was 99.99% clear blue sky. I gave up and went home!!!
