I was breathing a little easier as I stepped out of Tommy Wu’s place. I was considering my next move when the barrel tapped the back of my neck—cold steel, no words. I turned around slowly and was greeted by an old acquaintance, Dr. Wu Lei, a once prosperous surgeon turned into a cold hitman by a traffic accident that robbed him of the use of a hand.
“Don’t Flinch Mr. Malloy,” his voice purred. You’re coming with me." Before I could argue I was in the back of a van with blackout windows. It moved through the streets like a silent hearse. Nobody spoke. After several minutes it came to a stop behind a crumbling herbal shop.
“What are we doing here?” I asked.
“Benny Chow wishes to have a word with you Mr. Malloy. Please get out and walk into the building.”
Benny Chow was a bottom feeder in the Chinatown underworld with connections nobody liked to admit. The good doctor jabbed my ribs with his iron and pushed me through the doors.
