I've always wondered if you can have a dream within a dream. Or if dreams can somehow connect. Whatever, it seems like I'm stuck in a perpetual cycle of fantasy dreams. Say hello to Africa. At least my twisted dream version.

I've heard, in more impoverished neighborhoods, it's popular to leave your best clothes hanging outside for the neighbors to see. This practice is a display of wealth, and has been known to attract the better kind of husband candidates for your unmarried daughters. Of course, this could also be an urban myth.

Joey Salvucci wasn’t that cold, but he was cold enough to be dead. The cops mulled about smoking and cracking jokes. Salvucci was just one more wise guy sleeping the big sleep--brought down by a hailstorm of hot lead. There's always somebody out there willing to ruin your day—or your life if you aren't careful.

The south side is full of cheap hoodlums and small time racketeers trying to muscle their way into the big game. The syndicate bosses use them as hired muscle. The big guys vacation in Switzerland and the Bahamas. Even their dogs fly first class. You'd never catch one them on the streets getting their hands dirty. They're as clean as the pope's soap. Their street soldiers are the kind of guys that are eventually found in the trunks of cars in airport parking lots or washed up along the river. Just another group of wise guys on the outside looking in--wise guys that never get beyond the front door of a cheap boarding house.

High on my list of essential people are grocery store clerks--long hours on the old feet and all those pesky customers. It's tough work if you can get it. Marg and I have shopped at the same store for years and know many of the clerks on a first name basis. I try to make things a little easier for them--a smile, and a thank you goes a long ways, as does bagging my own groceries when they look a little stressed. Yep, definite candidates for a having a section of highway named after them. Say hi to Dorothy Nobetter, seen above trying to console a customer who couldn't find the frozen peas in aisle ten.

On my first visit to Paris during 1972, I stayed in the Latin Quarter. I found it to be one of the most moodily cool places I'd ever seen. It was oozing the ghosts of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Picasso, and Stein. I was sharing a cheap flea bitten room with a guy I met on the plane. The hotel had one water closet per floor. Of course our room, like most rooms in France at the time contained a bidet and being twenty year's old and inexperienced in the ways of the world I mistook it for a toilet. Luckily, my roomie explained it to me before I could try it out.

"It's a bidet," he said.

"A bi-what?" I asked. He explained the function to me, and forever encumbered by the knowledge, I went off to wait in the line down the hall for the real loo.

During the Migration Period and later Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin, numerous nomadic or semi-nomadic tribes moved into the area that is now Hungary. The Principality of Hungary was founded in 895 or 896 AD. The Magyars probably brought sheep and dogs with them, and established a pastoral culture in the Hungarian plains.

In the fifteenth century Matthias Corvinus is believed to have kept large numbers of Kuvasz dogs at his court as guard dogs or hunting dogs, or sometimes as war dogs.

Selective breeding of the Kuvasz as a breed began in the latter part of the nineteenth century, and a breed standard was drawn up.: 92  In 1934 it was accepted by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale,: 92  which lists the date of full acceptance as 1954. By the end of World War II, nearly all the Kuvasz dogs in Hungary had been killed. The dogs had such a reputation for protecting their families that they were actively sought and killed by German and Soviet soldiers, while at the same time some German officers used to take Kuvasz dogs home with them. After the Soviet invasion and the end of the war, the breed was nearly extinct in Hungary. After the war, it was revealed that fewer than thirty Kuvasz were left in Hungary and some sources indicate the number may have been as few as twelve. Since then, due to many dedicated breeders, Kuvasz breed have repopulated Hungary. However, as a result of this near extinction, the genetic pool available to breeders was severely restricted and there is conjecture that some may have used other breeds, such as the Great Pyrenees, to continue their programs.

There was a time when the boy in this picture would have been scampering about, throwing rocks, playing with a pocket knife or firing his slingshot, while his dog would have been romping about, just happy to be part of the day. The paradox of the night owl: artistic, smarter than the average bear, but more sedentary and prone to sicknesses than your regular old Joe or Jill. I guess that's why the bluesmen coined the phrase, "the night life, it ain't no good life, but it's my life." Now I'm off to bed.
