I’m sorry about these old/not so old benches. They’ve been replaced by a remake of the landscaped grounds. They were memorials. What now happens about that? Were promises made in exchange for money? Unfortunately, these are not “happy benches”. Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley.
Despite their unusual mid-century modern design, the benches were very comfortable! As you can imagine, they shed rainwater very effectively! I sat on them to enjoy several picnic lunches not so long ago--they had a lovely view of the San Francisco Bay!
Detail of the House of Fraser department store (formerly Rackhams), Corporation Street, Birmingham. The building was designed by architects T. P. Bennett and Son and opened in 1961.
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area but spend a lot of time in a second home in the Palm Springs area in California where there are a lot of structures that were built during the Mid-Century era of American design and architecture. There are a lot of homes that preserve the aesthetic but this neon-lit car wash sign on Highway 111 always remind me of the style whenever I pass by it.

In a large corner lot, a 3148 Square foot, four bedroom, two bath single family home built in 1950. Located in the Kahala neighborhood, often called “The Beverly Hills of Hawaii”.
This space in the original house was a pantry -- with the door on the tiled wall -- and about 20'' of the master bedroom foyer. A powder room was first built here during the 1992 remodel. As in the main bathroom, the big cabinet is a stock laminate item, while the light box, valance and medicine cabinet are custom maple.
Anderson french doors custom stained to match the chocolate bamboo floors. Minka Aire ceiling fan in oil rubbed bronze finish same as hardware on the doors. Gas burning glass firepit with caprise shell style chandelier in matching color. Low voltage recessed lights on remote dimmer switch.

We will be having half of our hitchin' events here. It's a teeny vintage motel that has been preserved/converted to a boutique, period-themed spot. I'm a sucker for all things mid-century. For a while, we were looking at another locale—an outdoorsy, raw sort of place, which we loved just as much… but they turned out to be a little flaky. Not to be deterred… we decided to turn this into a two-day thing… so events at this location will be on day two, and day one can be outdoorsy and delightful. Best of both worlds!
