We were never able to ascertain why they built these strange, somehow evocative structures, or what they were supposed to represent. Whenever we asked, they clacked their teeth and hid their eyes behind their hands.

Jennifer's voice was steady as she began to force-feed the feathers to the occultist.

"I want. The magic. To work."

"We all do," I whispered.

Project: The Potential Forest

Nathan Lilly took this picture of me while on the Microfiction Panel, after I said that flash and short-short fiction had the same relationship to captial-"L"-Literature that a cartoon has to an oil painting.

I'm pretty sure I'm right.

Back in August I participated in Folded Word's writing month event, called "24/7,". Participants spent the first 24 days of the month writing short works, then spent the final week in revisions. The second part of this entry gives more details.

I wasn't required to give a central theme to the entries, but I chose the theme "Divinations" and used a pair of dice to generate prompts. I've posted a linked index of my entries here.

I've now compiled those entries into this chapbook. I've made some revisions to the original works, changed their presentation order, and changed or omitted a few of the blog's thematic photos.

This is dedicated to people who feel brutalized by Valentine's day.

You are not unloved.

no use in trying, they wheedled.

one of the things that's been simultaneously the most valuable and most trying aspects of this first year of #medschool has been learning about myself at an entirely different level than before: figuring out the line between survive and thrive each day; (re)discovering the best parts of myself and how to brush off the years of accumulated self-doubt; cultivating a network of love and friendship and support... i could go on. much of it comes down to this school, this program, these folks, and for that i am eternally grateful.
