The STM8 deservers more love. It is not as sexy as some of the other 8-bit micros, but it is cheap and reliable and can be amazingly low power.
Pic12F508 microcontroller used to make a switching supply. Steps up voltage to 24V from 5volt input. All 8 LEDs brightly lit.

Just received an ITeaduino from ITead Studios in China. It's a clone of the Arduino, with a few enhancements like a simple selector to run on 3.3V and three pin connectors with power for inputs and outputs.
Comes in a pretty nice box too.

Almost no idea what I am doing. That's why this is so fun.
I took a cue from Flickr Member "bbum "and soldered in machine pins turning the target board in to a sort of breadboard. It was good solder practice. I'm ready now to break out the fancy pants iron I bought when I showed my mother the best place to by a soldering iron.
