Coon Rapids, Minnesota. What do you do with a former auto repair garage? Why, open a micro brewery, what else?
Beer batch stickers on a walk-in cooler at Double Mountain Brewery in Hood River, Oregon. Their IRA is one of my favorite beers.
Bent, twisted and broken, the rock layers still line up like brushstrokes in the day's first light on a calm and cloudless morning by the sea at Pemaquid Point, Maine.
My wife and I took a break a week or so ago and headed up to the beautiful Maine coast for a few days. Lobster, microbrews and walks in the autumn woods were more our focus this trip than photography, but I still headed out before dawn a few times with the camera. Maine's coastal regions are absolutely stunning to my eye, with the fall colors of its hardwood forests in places (though not in this scene) reaching all the way to wonderful rocky shores.
Like everyone else, when I have a chance to get out for some photography, I can't help but wish for just the right amount and position of clouds in the sky--sort of the Goldilocks approach to clouds--but "just right" clouds were not to be on this trip. The weather was beautiful in every way for enjoying the autumn outdoors, but it seemed the clouds disappeared entirely (or in one case socked in completely) almost every time I planned to break out the camera. More incentive to go back!
This is a one minute exposure using a Singh-Ray 10-stop ND filter. And for those who may wonder, there is no special post-processing done to the rocks or the wonderful light catching on the intermittent finer ridges and larger faces of the rocks in this scene.

If the worst of your luck includes a busted sandal, you are having a really good day! El Robusto Porter brewed by Busted Sandal Brewery of San Antonio, Texas. It is rich and creamy and full of character.
After the working remotely for the day is done, a Puerto Rican microbrew, a good book and a hammock with a view of the sea, Rincon, Puerto RIco
The wooden stairs lead into the Atlantic Ocean. It was a photo from the first Florida trip that we took. Much has changed there since then.
The wandering eyes are a composites of my legs and an eye from a beer bottle label. No symbolism there, though I do enjoy a good microbrew..
The Thomas Edison Depot Museum is located under the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, MI. Last night's streaky sunset reflected nicely in the windows of their train car.
I got the idea in my head for this because of this shot taken by my friend Ray last year.
When we got done taking our pictures, we found a decent restaurant called Quay Street Brewing Company. Good food and excellent microbrew.
ODC - Out with the old.
Well after the pink tones of sunrise had given away to clear blue morning skies, upturned rock layers still in shadow create wonderful lines leading up a seaside ridge to a little pool of water left over from the previous day's storm and beyond to the picturesque lighthouse at Pemaquid Point, Maine.
This image is from a quick drive up the coast north from Boston with my wife this past fall. While I love the sandy beaches all along the North Carolina coast near where we live, I have to say that that the varied and magnificent rocky formations along the Maine coast are a fantastic change of pace, especially from a photographic perspective. I didn't have too much time with the camera on this trip, what with all the delicious lobster and microbrews to try, but Maine is on the short list for a return visit very soon!

A monochrome version with digital alterations 2020 - Some great micro-brews can be had/sampled here. Two brews on the beer menu have some serious alcohol content 10 & 17%. No I did not try them.
*Sadly this establishment fell Victim to the 2020 pandemic and shuttered its doors.
I love beer for numerous reasons. One of which is the seasonal releases put out by breweries. Check out my blog entry about seasonal beers over at Life By The Pint. Cheers!
*Note* Redhook no longer brews the Late Harvest Autumn ale. I took this photo last year.

Make it a "Hurricane" before I go insane.
It's only half-past twelve but I don't care,
It's five o'clock somewhere!

This gentleman with fashionable glasses is Ataru Kobayashi, our guest sake expert who explained the details on each sake we served at our Sake Tasting Dinner featuring 9 sakes paired with 9 course dinner. He was moving the bottle here but the sake in his hand is "Hakuryu (White Dragon) Daiginjo." We paired this one with "Cold Shiro-Miso Couliflower Soup." Kabayashi-san is the president of Niigata Sake Selections carrying microbrew sakes from Niigat region. I think he tends to pick richer sakes than the typical dry & light Niigata style, and I love it. Our customers loved it. His family owns the Musashino Shuzo, and his brother Hisashi is the one that brought us the special competition sake that I uploaded yesterday. It was a wonderful night. weeeeeeeee
Just posted my article on Thanksgiving Day food and beer pairings over at Life By The Pint. If your unsure what beer to enjoy over the holiday we got you covered. Apologies to those living outside the Pacific Northwest as many of the recommended beers are only available regionally, never fear though the general styles discussed still apply.
Woods Cerveceria, 3801 18th Street, San Francisco, California. A rustic Argentinean cafe serving craft beers and empanadas.
Late night fuel, in Flagstaff preparing for the next morning's sessions. That half-gallon jug of local microbrew pilsner came in handy.
A couple weeks ago at 6th and I, good event all around. A bit more talking than absolutely necessary in my book but the beer was good. Since we were tasting 5 or 6 different takes on the same beer it did get a bit old after a while. 6th and I does some fantastic events all the time, definitely keep an eye out.
Gratitude: Day 3/30
After a long day of travel (and a whole lot of traffic), I'm grateful for a few hours of downtime with friends. Last night we grabbed a few beers at Toronados in Lower Haight. If you're into microbrews and hard to find beers, this is the place for you! And right across the street you'll find the best seasoned french fries at the local BBQ/Sake place. Yes, you read that right. BBQ + Sake = I'm confused.
Happy Late Tipsy Tuesday
Happy Bokeh Wednesday
Have a super day :)

Disturbung? Naaah, you just haven't dunk enough yet, mon ami!
Avenue Duluth Est., Montreal QC - just across from "Réservoir" - a fabulous place for microbrews and yummy veggie food! After a few beers I was seeing the Mona Lisa in this ;-)
When I discovered visiting the Jenne Farm would only be a 30 minute detour AND take me past two breweries, I couldn't resist. Who am I to deny myself a classic New England farmland scene and delicious handcrafted microbrews? Finding this place is tough, it's located off a dirt road, and a teeny-tiny wood board along Vermont Route 106 advertising maple syrup is your only clue that you've arrived. I drove by it three times before I figured it out. Just some advice if you're trying to find it someday. If you think you've past it, then you probably have. Oh and try the maple syurp.
Jenne Farm, Reading, VT
huh? only iphone images? the set description has the details.

an original artwork by Pacific Wonderland artist: Jurassic Blueberries "Cannabis Inspired Abstract Expressionism"
From The Web.... The Wikileaf Blog says:
"Jurassic Blueberries is an Oregon based artist whose vibrant, colorful depictions of the cannabis leaf can only be described as inspirational. In an attempt to capture the simple, natural beauty of the plant, Jurassic Blueberries’ work features impressions of whole leaves against multi-colored backdrops that reflect the mood of each individual work. Some are calming and serene while others are psychedelic and energizing. They are all, however, thought provoking. You may even recognize Jurassic Blueberries’ artwork from news and blog sites from around the web, as it has been featured as go to stock images for cannabis over and over" !

Cheers to all my friends and visitors! Thank you for all of your encouraging comments and inspiring work. If I spent time answering every comment I'd never have time to post but please know that it is all very much appreciated.
I am lucky enough to live near a great micro brewery (Taps on Queen) that also has some very good food, not to mention an excellent schedule of local live music. Once I'm ready my walk home is just about as long as a cigar.
