The idea of this photograph is to bring attention to the effects mental health can have on the individual and those surrounding them and was influenced by Michael Wolf’s ‘Tokyo Compression’ series. When I came across this collection, I thought about how the condensation that is obstructing the commuters' faces acts like a mask. Applying this to my interest in mental health, I started to picture the ‘mask’ to connote how you can portray yourself to be healthy when surrounded by others, but when alone that mask lowers itself to reveal your struggles. Equally, it could also be interpreted as metaphor for mental illnesses, such as anxiety and depression, as it is blocking the model from moving forward past that time in their life.

My plan for this shoot was to use my mother; she had experienced anxiety and depression, as well as - at the time - going through cancer treatment, which made her an ideal advocate for what this shoot stands for. To create the condensation effect, I had help from an assistant who held a sheet of scratched acetate over the model’s face and sprayed it with water. The camera I used was my Nikon D3300 with its 15-55mm lens with manual focus and the following settings: an aperture of f/5.6; a shutter speed of 1/125; an ISO of 560. For my post-production, I used Adobe Photoshop to adjust the image’s levels, then heightened the contrast to create a more extreme juxtaposition between the dark shadows on the model and the bright exposure of the background. I chose to do this to represent how the model is smothered in a metaphorical darkness within their head and they can’t reach the light as they’ve left it behind them.

Something I would do differently next time is I wouldn’t halt the post-production where I did. I would continue on to explore how I could elevate the emotions of the photograph manually, possibly through collaging or printmaking.
