I am afraid this is the last one from METU OPEN 2014.

There was a dance competition held at my university and being one of the accredited photographers, I was able to visit backstage and had the chance to photograph a couple of very beautiful ladies that wear a heavy make up.

As I had the long waited diversity and as most of these people were relaxed with cameras and the concept of being photographed, I was pretty happy.

Shooted 500+ images in 5 hours and I already started making plans about next year's competition. Sadly my equipment was not suitable for the dancing part and I still have a lot of editing to do. I need to submit my images as soon as possible and after deleting several images, I still have 230 to edit.

Sadly most people were in a rush at backstage and I didn't had the chance to ask names. I had questions to ask but didn't have the chance.

When competing, they have very happy faces (except Pasadoble of course) and it gives you joy to watch. I wonder what lies behind that glamour. I am sure hours and hours of practice is not so enjoyable. They travel a lot. That Saturday's competition started at 9 AM and ended at 23:30 PM. That's a lot of time to spend. There were dancers lying on the ground and sleeping. It is definitely tiring. Wonder for how many years they can dance and whether they make a good living out of dancing.

I am sure making a living with something passionately loved is good for everyone.

FDNY Medical Evacuation Transport Unit Taken at EMS Station 50

Today was the eve of a religious holiday. As the holiday started this afternoon and most of the business came to a halt and I was expected to work until 6 PM, I decided to take an early leave and visit the college I graduated. What can I do? Working when everyone else isn’t working is hard.

Lately I am carrying my camera to anywhere I go and I had planned to hunt for another stranger. As most of the Turkish people are extremely shy and pronouncing the word “internet” almost certainly brings a NO, I am trying to develop new ways of making contact with strangers that ends up with a positive response. I’ve been thinking about how to approach people and hitchhiking college students seemed an easy target.

METU, Middle East Technical University, is one of the most desired colleges of Turkey and accepted as one of the best. The campus is huge. Whenever I visit the campus, I see several appealing targets and this time was no different.

Because of the two day holiday, nearly half of the population left the city and went to visit relatives or friends or to dip themselves in crowded waters of the coast. More than that, it’s already end of the semester and as far as I know summer school has also ended. So my chances were not high and I was expecting to find the campus deserted.

It was. I spend almost an hour walking aimlessly, looking for a desirable subject. Then I lie at the grass and enjoyed the silent and peaceful atmosphere. After some time, I decided I shouldn’t be wasting any more of my time and headed back home.

When I came to the main gate of the campus, she was hitchhiking. The first thing that grabbed my attention was her red hair. There were three cars in front of me and she seemed to have an unbelievable energy oozing from her. It was interesting to watch each car stopped one by one but she didn’t get into any of them. When it’s my turn to try, she put on a very cute face and raised her hand. I stopped and it turned out that she was trying to go a neighborhood that would normally be hard to reach by hitchhiking. She told me where she’s headed, I told her where I am going and it didn’t match.

I haven’t had the chance to ask at that moment because there were cars behind me and I wouldn’t be able to stop. But right after I left the location, the idea started to creep on my mind… Why didn’t I ask? She might have been your next stranger, you idiot!

I decided to come back and ask. Of course there wasn’t any guarantees that she still be waiting at the same spot when I get back there but the decision was made and I had to take my chances.

There is a clover leaf junction right in front of the entrance of the college and I had to take three or four turns to come back to the same spot. When I came back, she was still there, still waiting. I parked the car. There were a lot of people around and I felt there were watching me when I approached her.

I am not sure whether this excitement will fade in time but I doubt it will. I try to stay calm each time. I do not have any problems meeting new people and I never experienced this kind of a shyness talking to strangers. But is seems I do find something to make me nervous and it was her hitchhiking this time. I didn’t want to get in the way as she wasn’t be able to stop passing cars while I was doing my thing.

I went to her and told her about the project. At first she didn’t understand why i was telling her about the project and looked at me with wondering eyes. I asked whether she might be willing to be my next stranger and she said yes. I had to be quick. There was a very harsh sunlight and I had left the reflector at the car.

I am not sure whether this might be counted as an improvement but I didn’t forget to ask her name (well, as expected, I had forgotten her name when I was back home) and e-mail address.

Meet Ezgi. She is a student at METU and studying sociology. She has a warm, friendly character and I am sure her friends enjoy being around her when they have the chance. And she was my first stranger who has an idea what Flickr is.

I asked her to move to the shadow to get rid of the punishing sunlight. I shoot and asked her a couple of questions. I am not sure but it only took two or three minutes and it was pretty surprising to see one of the security guards of the university coming towards us when I was finished. The guy saw me moving away from her and decided to watch from a distance. Most probably she didn’t notice the guy but I was aware and although I am certain there won’t be any problems, I decided to move faster and went right back to my car.

When I get back home I started working on the images and realized I haven’t asked her about her department and some other details. As I have her e-mail address, I decided to write her and asked a couple of things. Then I browsed to gmail and send her an e-mail. Then her Google+ page come up, then I found her Facebook page and YouTube channel followed. It is a little freaky to realize how connected we all are and how much information you can get about someone by just knowing the name or the e-mail address. 1984, eh?

Well, I am sure she is much more capable than I am and she will found this post as well. I am pretty grateful that she let me take her photos.

I bet you guys also have some images that are challenging. Well, I must confess I am not fully satisfied with what have and I am sure I’ll be spending quite a time with reedits.
