While visiting this beautiful Castle of Methoni, some thunderclouds where arising. While most visitors quickly went back to the entrance area, we took shelter at the Bourtzi (where this photo is taken from) to be able to take this photo from the impressive cloud formation.

The castle of Methoni is the most important in Greece. It was built by the Venetians when they became masters of the town in 1209 AD. It is built on a rock that goes into the sea and is separated from the mainland by an artificial moat. It has an area of 93 acres. On the north side there is a gate which is made of rectangular limestone. The castle walls are reinforced at some points by towers. The Bourtzi tower lies at the south of the fortress, built on an islet south of the castle. It is connected to the main fortress by a bridge with arches. Bourtzi became part of the maritime fortification of Methoni and served various purposes per seasons: it was used as the base of the guard for the port control, as a lighthouse, as a prison, but also as a refuge in times of residents siege.

On the east side of the castle there is a small breakwater which today is part of the small port of Methoni. [6] The walls, the towers, the ramparts, the northwestern artillery platform and the various gates of the castle have been dated thanks to the identification of the Venetian escutcheons which are still in their respective places.

The period of the castle's prime is placed in the period of the first Venetian occupation (13th-15th c.).

Thank you all for your visit

as rain and thunderstorms were closing in, the sky got a very interesting structure. Instead of my first instinct of getting away I stayed at the place and took some interesting pictures.

The Kamares were part of the old aqueduct which provided Niokastro with fresh water.

The aqueduct of Navarino is a remarkable late medieval project that is characterized by numerous building phases. Its construction covered a period from the 1st Ottoman rule through the 2nd Venetian rule of the region and several repairs on it took place during the first years of the Hellenic State. It fulfilled the watering demands of the New Castle (Niokastro) and later on of the whole small town of Pylos until the beginning of 20th century.

The aqueduct consisted of two distinct branches which supplied water from two different springs. The older part carried water from the nearby spring of Palionero (old water) 4km away and the newer from the Chandrinos area covering a distance of approximately 12 km.

Mythical Grεεcε

Methoni was known from the time of Homer already, who mentions it as one of the seven towns that were promised to Achilles by Agamemnon, to appease his anger and persuade him to go back to the battle. Pausanias and Stravon call it Mothoni and identify it as the Homeric town.

Methoni Castle is a medieval fortification in the southwest of Peloponnes. What still can be seen today was built by the Venetians when they occupied this area.

A Dark Thundercloud is above the Venetian Castle in Methoni and brings some Thunderstorms over Methoni Castle.

Sergio Leone's famous arch in Once Upon a Time in the West could have been inspired by this.

Remainders of Castle Methoni on Peloponnes contrast nicely with the azure Mediterranean Sea.

The castle was built by the Venetians in the early 13th c entury. It is among the largest castles in the Mediterranean area. At the south edge of the castle a fortified islet floats. Bourtzi, as it is called, a prison and place of executions during the Turkish Occupation, was built in 1500 and is connected to the Sea Gate of the castle with a paved tiny road.

Methóni Castle was built by the Venetians in the early 13th century on a rocky promontory. The castle is among the largest ones in the Mediterranean. It has a bridge stone of 14 arches which connects the castle to the shore instead of the timber one that used to stand in its place before the Venetians ever got there. The celebrated symbol of Venice, the lion of St Marc, dominates the gate of the castle where immured reliefs, emblems, blazons, inscriptions, the huge gates –especially the main gate, above the moat – and the relics of two Ottoman bathhouses have survived.

Pieria is a region within Macedonia, in northwest Greece, with a population of around 130,000. The territory stretches from Methoni in the north, 47km from Thessaloniki, to Platamonas in the south, 104km from Greece’s second city. This is not a well-known area, other than to those intending to climb Mount Olympus (2918m), but there is much to see and do to suit all interests.

The region is characterised by extensive plains, high mountains and Blue Flag sandy beaches. In fact, Pieria boasts a 60km coastline along the Thermaikos Gulf - almost one long beach. Some stretches are sandy, others a mixture of sand and shingle. The waters are crystal clear, and one is never far from the nearest café/bar, fish taverna - there are numerous small fishing harbours dotted along the coast - or restaurant. Local cuisine makes particular use of sea food and, at seaside restaurants, you can choose from a wide range of fish. In the mountainous regions you will find game, roast meat and traditional pies. Olive oil and locally-grown vegetables are, of course widely used, as are herbs such as oregano, mint and basil.

Mount Olympus, the Mountain of the Gods, falls within the Pierian Mountain Range, home to the Greek mythological figures Orpheus and The Muses. For those interested in Greek literature, it was George Zorba - who lived for some time in the village of Kolindros- who inspired the novel Zorba the Greek by the famous Greek author Nikos Kazanzakis.

There are many ancient mountain villages to explore, such as 17th century Palei Pori, picturesque medieval Paleos Panteleimonas - which can be combined with a visit to the Venetian fortress of Platamonas - plus Palea Skotina, Petra, Paleo Elatohori, Kato and Ano Milia and, of course, the town of Litochoro, the gateway to Mount Olympus.

One of the most famous archaeological sites in Greece, somehow unknown to the average visitor, is to be found at Dion, the city of Zeus and a centre of Macedonian culture. Other notable sites that can be visited are the prehistoric settlement at Makrigialos, Byzantine Pydna (Kitros), and the fortified post-Byzantine settlement of Louloudies. All these sites are in close proximity to each other, with Dion only 12 km (20 mins drive) from Litochoro.
