Populonia is located in a dominant position on one of the promontories they form the gulf of Baratti and preserves fortifications of the XV century by the Lords of Piombino, the Appiani, as evidenced by the dragon symbol of the placed family above the entrance to the village. Populonia was an ancient Etruscan settlement, named Fufluna (from Fufluns, Etruscan god of wine and inebriation) or Pupluna, the only

Etruscan city built along the coast. It was one of the twelve cities of the Dodecapolis Etruscan, the main city-states that were part of Etruria, ruled by a lucumone.Together with Volterra it was one of the centers of greatest mining activity and of the metallurgical industry of the Etruscans. In the 6th century BC. lived his period of maximum splendor, coming to host many thousands of inhabitants. The decadence

of the ancient city began in the 1st century BC; from this date a slow and very long one descending parable characterized the life of Populonia. Barbarian invasions and looting decimated the population over the centuries, irreparably marking history of the settlement and putting an end to the great Etruscan city. The village of Populonia as we see it today it dates back to the 15th century. It was part of the Principality of Piombino, run by the Appiani family, originally from Pisa. It is due to their intervention the medieval layout of the village, in addition to the tower and fortifications. The current fortress was in fact begun by the Lords of Piombino Jacopo II Appiani and brought to term by Jacopo III Appiani in the mid-fifteenth century, following a precise project for the urban and demographic revitalization of Populonia, now reduced to a state of humble village.

The Rocca di Populonia is between the medieval building and the modern fortification of the late fifteenth century and dominates, from a height, the Gulf of Baratti, the coast north of Piombino and the stretch of sea between the mainland and the archipelago Tuscan.

The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco was originally constructed in 1915 as part of ten exhibit palaces for the Pan-Pacific Exposition. Designed by Bernard Maybeck under a Roman and Ancient Greek style, the palace was so beloved that it was voted for preservation while the rest of the exhibit palaces of Education, Liberal Arts, Manufactures, Varied Industries, Agriculture, Food Products, Transportation, Mines and Metallurgy, and Machinery were torn down. It has been renovated and restored over the years and continues to remain a popular destination for weddings and tourists.

This picture was taken in quite a rush as I only had about 5 minutes to swing by on the way elsewhere, grab a few shots, and quickly leave. It is such a beautiful building though that I could not leave San Francisco without a few pictures of it, especially lit up at dusk.

66181 is near the end of its 5 mile climb at 1:40 as it approaches the opencast disposal point at Cwmbargoed, at the head of the Taff Bargoed Valley with an empty train from Margam.

Cwmbargoed is one of two locations still generating coal traffic by rail in South Wales in 2021. A nominally daily train ships metallurgical coal to Tata at Port Talbot, and a weekly train of coal is delivered to the cement works at Hope in Derbyshire.

Leprechauns and that elusive pot of gold were nowhere to be found, but instead the elaborate spectrum of rays cast down from the heavens located the real prize in the form of BNSF 1099 dressed in BNSF's infant livery busting out of the torrential storm clouds dropping their deluge onto Mississippi River at Ferryville, WI. With the thunderstorm now behind them, U CKBSWE0 12T and crew have sights set on La Crosse, WI, but more difficulties lie ahead in their path as they will need to weave through a maze of dead trains and 30 miles of single track along with five others in the fleet in front of them on a heavily plugged up north end of the Aurora Subdivision. These empty hoppers came from the steel manufacturing powerhouse of Cleveland Cliffs at Burns Harbor, IN, and will be routed through the Canadian border via Sweetgrass, MT, where CP will take them the remainder of the journey to Teck Resources in British Columbia for another round of metallurgical coal.

Populonia was one of the main cities of the Etruscans, an ancient civilization that thrived in central Italy before Roman domination. The city was famous for its metallurgy, particularly the production of iron. With the advent of the Romans, Populonia continued to prosper, but with the decline of the Roman Empire, the city was abandoned due to frequent barbarian incursions. It was only in the Middle Ages that the area was inhabited again, giving rise to the medieval village that we can see today.

Today the village of Populonia is part of the municipality of Piombino. It is a destination that offers a perfect balance of culture, history and natural beauty. Whether you are an archeology enthusiast, a nature lover or simply looking for a quiet place to relax, you will find something to interest you in this charming Tuscan cit

Beech Mountain RR has one mission - deliver to market some of the best metallurgical coal the earth has to offer. This highly sought after coal is rich in carbon, but contains low levels of sulfur and other impurities. At best they operate trains four or five times each month on their 8-mile long route. Needless to say getting a move on one's day off is quite a catch.

BEEM loads 80-car trains, taking the empties up in three 25 to 30 car cuts and returning with loads in as many trips - this results in two light engine trips, one after delivering the first cut of empties to the mine and one to retrieve the last cut of loads. Two ALCo switchers are used, the one pictured here, and another that stays at the mine loading cars. A pair of two-man crews work the trains, they are mining company employees that do other tasks when trains are not running.

Here the "road crew" is shoving the second cut of loads past their engine house toward the Appalachian & Ohio RR interchange. The A&O leases all of the former B&O coal lines in the area and they deliver the trains to the CSX at Grafton, WV, where most of them are taken to Baltimore for transloading into ships for export.

FCB, a former metallurgical industry, was founded in 1861. Locomotives, bridges, steel frames and tunnel boring machines were manufactured in these halls by up to 5 000 workers. Its workshops were closed in 2001. The site, an industrial wasteland of 17ha in the heart of the Lille metropolis is the object of a large rehabilitation with the preservation of halls in connection with the district.

The Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District of San Francisco, California is a monumental structure originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in order to exhibit works of art. Completely rebuilt from 1964 to 1974, it is one of only a few surviving structures from the Exposition.

The Palace of Fine Arts was one of ten palaces at the heart of the Panama-Pacific Exhibition, which also included the exhibit palaces of Education, Liberal Arts, Manufactures, Varied Industries, Agriculture, Food Products, Transportation, Mines and Metallurgy and the Palace of Machinery. The Palace of Fine Arts was designed by Bernard Maybeck, who took his inspiration from Roman and Ancient Greek architecture in designing what was essentially a fictional ruin from another time.

After dropping a loaded coal train at the CSX interchange in Thurmond, WV, an R. J. Corman's West Virginia Lines fleet, having been delivered in early 2022. Two SD70M's are expected to be delivered sometime in the future, potentially displacing the iconic Tunnel Motor duo.

Over the next week I want to take a look at an example of heavy industry. The focus will be on TEMCO, Bell Bay, seen through a range of different artistic approaches. The afternoon on which these photographs were taken was suitably dull. For this photo in particular accurate reproduction of the light and colour was important - as in any social realism.

The Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company (TEMCO) is Australia's only manganese alloy smelter and supplies two types of this critical steel additive to more than fifty companies around the globe. BHP Pty Ltd built the TEMCO plant in the early 1960s, at Bell Bay, near George Town. When the plant was opened on 11 May 1962, TEMCO formed a major part of the state's industrial sector – and remains so today. TEMCO's employment figures peaked at 475 in the early 1980s. The company's four electric-arc furnaces produce more than 250,000 tonnes of manganese alloys annually, eighty percent of which is exported. BHP sold the plant to Billiton PLC subsidiary, Samancor Pty Ltd, in 1998, but re-established its association with TEMCO a few years later in a merger which created BHP Billiton Pty Ltd.

The territorial expansion towards Chinchaysuyo (now Ecuador) took place towards the middle of the 15th century and culminated in the first decades of the 16th. It was initiated by the Inca Tupac Yupanqui, son of Pachacuti Inca, the "renovator of the universe" and true builder of the Tahuantinsuyo or Empire of the Incas. The example of the great Tupac Yupanqui was followed by his son Huayna Cápac, until he submitted under his power the entire "universe" then known, with more than 6,000 kilometers of North-South extension and fundamentally affecting the people of the Sierra, since they felt no interest in the low plains of the West Coast and in the endless Amazon rainforests of the East. This empire included on the one hand the widest diversity of peoples, cultures, languages, cults and technologies, and on the other an extraordinary variety of ecological resources; factors with which thanks to an administrative, economic and theocratic system imposed by the Cuzqueños, the largest civilization that has existed in Andean History was structured.

The Incas had no major difficulty in dominating the Cañaris and Puruháes (in Ecuador) with whom they applied a very common strategy in them: the friendly system of reciprocity with the heads of the groups until they achieved their subordination; This method had given them rapid and successful results in Bolivia and Peru; while in the northern villages they had to apply the severe military conquest due to the stubborn resistance they encountered. Testimony of those fierce battles was precisely that of Yahuarcocha (lake of blood) whose waters were dyed red with the blood of the brave Caranquis who succumbed to Huayna Cápac himself.

The invaders captured from the conquered the long tradition and knowledge they had about agriculture, metallurgy, production of luxury products, extraction of the Spondylus shell, salt, coca, etc. Here they found a prodigal nature, with humid rainforest, mangroves and coastline on the coast; wide valleys, grasslands and fertile mountains in the Sierra. This geography counteracted with the ecological systems of the puna, reduced fertile spaces, or the extensive coastal deserts that predominate in the Central and Southern Andes, characteristic of present-day Peru.

From the cover of numerous magazines to the home screen on Windows computers - 'Tiger & Turtle - Magic Mountain' is one of the most photographed and most published motifs of recent times.

Grandiose view

Since its opening in November 2011, the walk-in roller coaster sculpture has made headlines around the world. The widely visible landmark was built on a former dump in the south of Duisburg. Those who climb the steps to the looping will be rewarded with a magnificent view. In good weather you can see from Duisburg city centre along the Rhine to Düsseldorf. Sometimes you can even see the tower of the airport. Around the sculpture you can see the bustle of the metallurgical works, on huge storage areas of the logport, but also on dense natural forest areas.

A trio of R. J. Corman SD40's lead an empty coal drag up the Loup Creek Branch, passing Dunloup Creek Falls as they follow the namesake creek out of Thurmond, WV. The train is bound for the Alpha Metallurgical Resources loadout at the very end of the branch in Pax, WV. Due to the tough grades and tight curves along this branch, RJ Corman utilizes a trio of SD40-2 variants to assist CSX run-through power.

CSX mine run R211 has arrived at the coal loadout for the Logan County Complex in Pardee, West Virginia and is nearly done pulling its train of empties uphill under the loading tower. The Logan County Complex includes the four underground mines Powellton No. 1, Lower War Eagle, Eagle No. 1, and Muddy Bridge as well as the surface mint Toney Fork that produce metallurgical coal fed by conveyor and trucks to this rail loading location.

Üstí nad Labem_Labe_Elbe_Větruše_Czechia

Ústí nad Labem (Czech pronunciation: [ˈuːsciː ˈnad labɛm] (About this soundlisten)), formerly known by its German name Aussig,[1] is the 7th-most populous city of the Czech Republic. It is the capital of its eponymous region and district. Ústí is situated in a mountainous district at the confluence of the Bílina and Elbe rivers. It is a major industrial center and, besides being an active river port, is an important railway junction.

Ústí nad Labem was mentioned as a trading centre as early as 993.[2] In the second half of the 13th century, King Otakar II of Bohemia invited German settlers into the country and granted them a German form of municipal incorporation, thereby founding the city proper.[2] In 1423, as King of Bohemia, Sigismund pledged the town to Elector Frederick I of Meißen, who occupied it with a Saxon garrison.[2] It was besieged by the Hussites in 1426: a German army of 70 000 was sent to its relief but the 25 000 besiegers defeated them amid great slaughter on 16 June; the next day, they stormed and razed the town.[2] It was left derelict for three years before rebuilding began in 1429.[2]

Ústí was again burned down in 1583 and was sacked by the Swedes in 1639 amid the Thirty Years' War.[1] It also suffered grievously during the Seven Years' War and was near the 1813 Battle of Kulm between France and the alliance of Austria, Prussia, and Russia during the Napoleonic Wars.[2] As late as 1830, its population was only 1400.[2]

As part of the Kingdom of Bohemia, it was eventually incorporated into Austria and heavily industrialized over the 19th century. After the Compromise of 1867, it headed the Aussig District, one of Austrian Bohemia's 94 District Commissions (Bezirkshauptmannschaften).[3] In the 1870s, with only 11 000 people, it was a major producer of woolen goods, linen, paper, ships, and chemicals and carried on a large trade in grain, fruit, mineral water, lumber, and coal.[1] By 1900, large-scale immigration had boosted the population to nearly 40 000, mostly German,[2] and added glassworking and stone to its trades.[2] The local river port became the busiest in the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire, surpassing even the seaport in Trieste.[citation needed]

The factories of Aussig—as it was then known—were an early center of the National Socialism ("Nazi") movement. The German Workers' Party in Austria (Deutsche Arbeiterpartei in Österreich) was founded on 15 November 1903 and later gave rise to the Sudeten German Party and Austrian National Socialism. Their books continued to be printed in Ústí even after the formation of Czechoslovakia in 1918. During the 1930 census, Ústí nad Labem was home to 43 793 residents: 32 878 considered German, 8 735 Czech or Slovak, 222 Jews, 16 Russians, and 11 Hungarians.[4] Ústí was ceded to Nazi Germany with the rest of the Sudetenland in October 1938 under the terms of the Munich Agreement. On New Year's Eve of that year, the Nazis burnt down the local synagogue; a meat factory was later raised in its place. The Jewish community in Ústí nad Labem was mostly exterminated over the course of World War II amid the Holocaust. In April 1945, the city was severely bombed by the Allies.[which?]

Under the terms of the Potsdam Conference and the Beneš decrees, the city was restored to Czechoslovakia and most of its German population expelled after Germany's defeat in World War II. In May 1948, the Communist government passed a new constitution declaring a people's republic. Communism continued until the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall set off a series of events which are now known as the Velvet Revolution. Today, Ústí nad Labem is a major industrial city of the Czech Republic with substantial chemical, metallurgical, textile, food, and machine tool industries.
