On 22nd Sep. 2013, heavy clashes took place across Hebron (clashes started on 20th Sep. and lasted seven days), leading to the injury and arrest of numerous Palestinians as well as the death of an Israeli soldier. As part of Sukkot celebrations, the street outside checkpoint 56 leading to Yatta was closed by Israeli military and border police. The army announced by military order that all shops on the street would have be closed and cars would have to be moved between 11am and 3pm, to ensure safe passage for settlers and Jewish visitors for a pilgrimage to the cave of Otniel ben Knaz, located on said road (what was clear provocation). Crowds of Palestinians, internationals and journalists gathered to witness and protest against this breaking of the Hebron agreement, signed in 1997 between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government and dividing the city into zones H1 and H2 under PA and Israeli military control respectively. The road to Yatta falls under Palestinian Authority control and is therefore illegal for Israelis to access. The clashes in Bab Al-Zawiyeh began around 11.30 am when Palestinian youths began to throw stones at the invading Israeli army and border police. The occupation forces responded with tear gas canisters, stunt grenades and plastic-coated steel bullets. Live ammunition was eventually used against resisting protestors and there are reports of several Palestinian men being treated for gunshot wounds.

Frank, a member of our Julio Claudian group was blessed enough to find this silver denarius with Germanicus reverse. I did not want to lose the information so I finally got around to putting into the Juio Claudian pool, Amazing find Frank!!

Here are some details of the find. In fact, this denarius of Caligula is part of a small treasure of 20 denarii, scattered over a small area of semi-arid scrub land, near the ancient roman city of Nemausus (today Nimes). Thanks to the calcarious soil the coins did not suffer corrosion. Besides some broken roman tiles, the area was virgin. It was evidently a site where was located a small country house, modest in all ways and deserted ever since the first century AD. Through the wear of the coins, from republican denarii, gallion types of Marcus Antonius, several Augustus denarii and the common Tiberius denarius with Livia seated, it can easily be concluded that the 20 denarii were hidden or lost at one time, about 38 AD, because the wear of each coin was equivalent with the age as compared with the most recent one (of Caligula). Nothing else was found here, except a small copper Gallic coin, much older, and, since it was in superb condition, using the same wear/age considerations, was lost about a hundred years earlier. Knowing that the salary of a common soldier at that time was about one denarius a day, the amount of denarii found here was quite considerable. The brown margin on top of the reverse is concretion (some people mistakenly thought the coin is subaerate). As the above information is first-hand, I can guarantee the coin is genuine. For sentimental reasons the coin is not for sale, but I’ll be happy to contribute to numismatic science by publication of its image Regards Frank. Canadian Forces Engineers use a metal detector to sweep a road, ensuring it is safe for travel during an early morning operation in Panjwa’i District to clear several small villages and compounds.

OP CRAZY FLIGHT 1 is one of the last operations for Royal 22 Régiment, Charlie Company before the Canadian Forces ends its mission in the Southern region of Afghanistan.

Operation ATHENA is Canada’s participation in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. The mission of Task Force Kandahar, the Canadian-led brigade in ISAF Regional Command (South), is to set the right conditions for sustainable progress in security, governance, development and peace in the districts of Panjwa'i, Dand and Daman in Kandahar Province, in conjunction with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Afghan national security forces, and other coalition and civilian partners.

Frank, a member of our Julio Claudian group was blessed enough to find this silver denarius with Germanicus reverse. I did not want to lose the information so I finally got around to putting into the Juio Claudian pool, Amazing find Frank!!

Here are some details of the find. In fact, this denarius of Caligula is part of a small treasure of 20 denarii, scattered over a small area of semi-arid scrub land, near the ancient roman city of Nemausus (today Nimes). Thanks to the calcarious soil the coins did not suffer corrosion. Besides some broken roman tiles, the area was virgin. It was evidently a site where was located a small country house, modest in all ways and deserted ever since the first century AD. Through the wear of the coins, from republican denarii, gallion types of Marcus Antonius, several Augustus denarii and the common Tiberius denarius with Livia seated, it can easily be concluded that the 20 denarii were hidden or lost at one time, about 38 AD, because the wear of each coin was equivalent with the age as compared with the most recent one (of Caligula). Nothing else was found here, except a small copper Gallic coin, much older, and, since it was in superb condition, using the same wear/age considerations, was lost about a hundred years earlier. Knowing that the salary of a common soldier at that time was about one denarius a day, the amount of denarii found here was quite considerable. The brown margin on top of the reverse is concretion (some people mistakenly thought the coin is subaerate). As the above information is first-hand, I can guarantee the coin is genuine. For sentimental reasons the coin is not for sale, but I’ll be happy to contribute to numismatic science by publication of its image Regards Frank.
